Does Anyone Else Do This?

I love creating characters I see in my mind for stories (which are yet to be written) on Sims. It makes it easier to see the way they look, which is one of the things I struggle with. I can see how to create the story, where the characters lie within the story, but the look eludes me as there is so much you could do. Plus it helps me to put my characters into a setting completely different to the setting of my story.

Does anyone else do this or something similar? Do you find it helps create a more solid story around a character with which you've become more familiar?
