How to Make a Good Story?

What are some good tips on writing a good Story?
Obviously I'm fully aware I'll never get to Stephen King status.
However I feel like my stories are mediocre in a sense.
I feel like I write like a 10 year old sometimes.

What I wanna know is;
Do people like reading long chapters or shorter chapters?
I typically like to write chapter over 3000 words. But even that doesn't feel long enough, but than again I don't know what people would like. I don't want it to be too short but I also don't want people getting bored with a long chapter.

Secondly, do people like more dialogue or no? I have gotten a lot of feedback in the past about how I wrote with too much dialogue and not enough of the actual plot itself. So should I dial it down on the dialogue or is dialogue a good thing?

I just need some tips, feedback or advice on how to make a good story to keep people wanting to read it, or to stay interested, there's nothing more satisfying than knowing I'm capturing an audience of readers who are impressed by what I do. I've always wanted to be a writer and this is a great way to start building up to something great.

Thanks! xx
