Movie Theater
Blatant darkness is filled with anticipation, impatience. Silence presses in on empty ears along with the creaking of red plush seats and shuffling feet. Whispered scolding echoes quietly throughout the antique-design room when a child or sibling talks too loud. Aisles twist out from the paths of the chairs and onto the fake velvet, mildly sloping stairs that lead to the movie screen. It is an empty black, contrasted against the dim lights of the pre-movie theater, framed by crusting walls and tasseled curtains. Next to the screen, the exit signs flicker neon green, deemed by some unknown mentor not important enough to fit into the budget. They cast an eerie light on the place but are forgotten once the movie starts, although they brighten as the lights dim. The rolling previews flash new lights on fixated faces in the audience; and when the silent crime warnings begin to flash the only sounds are rustling popcorn, the slurping of drinks and packages of candy being ripped open. The smell of sugar begins to waft around the room, mixing with the stationary, dank, too-cold air. It circulates throughout and then begins to fade from the minds of the audience when the credits flash on the screen. Catchy music plays as the many nearly anonymous benefactors of the film are played on the screen, unread by almost all in the theater, and the restless small crowd settles down. Coughs and whispers are speckled in between bars of the happy tune as the little plastic hot-dog containers begin to be popped open and momentarily distract those around the areas where they are opened. As the credits end, the music diminuendos and eventually floats out of hearing range, leaving behind a scene of a girl walking in New York. The title finally flashes on the screen, leaving a settled, comfortable feeling on the people in the theater, and the air around them seems to settle, preparing for the next two hours in the theater which seems almost like a different but familiar planet, a two hour vacation into other people’s lives.
