Colin and Mary are an English couple on holiday abroad in an unnamed city. On an evening walk the couple get forcefully befriended by local Robert, who later takes them to his home to introduce them to his wife Caroline. They leave feeling slightly disturbed. Their love is tested to the limit in the climax of the novel.
