The story of Daniel Sempere, who finds a novel called The Shadow of the Wind by an author Julian Carax when his father takes to the Cemetery of Lost Books. Years later, he discovers that someone by the name of Lain Coubert, the villain in Carax's novel who personifies Satan, is tracking down every one of Carax's novels to burn them. Daniel goes to harrowing lengths to uncover the mystery that is Julian Carax before Lain Coubert can destroy the last of Carax's works, and Daniel's life in the process.
