This is the story of a fiction geisha living in Kyoto, Japan before and after World War II. The book follows the life of Sayuri, who was born Chiyo in a small seaside village. She and her sister are sold to geisha houses in Kyoto due to their father's desperate attempts to save their sick mother. After Chiyo tries to run away with her sister, she is made into a servant girl instead of a geisha. A chance when she is a teenager gives her the opportunity for her greatest wish: to be a geisha and win the love of a kind man who helped her many years before.

I love the film as well. I saw the film before the book, which is how I always try to do things so I don't wind up hating the book.
