The book follows Trudi Montag, a girl born to a loving father and a mother who refuses to except her daughter until Trudi is a toddler. Trudi soon learns that she is a dwarf and makes everyone in her town very uneasy about her physical appearance. She becomes very resentful because of her size but soon learns that her uniqueness is gift. At the end of the novel, she reflects on all the positive thing in her life and learns to embrace what she has in life.
