1 Liter of Tears is the true life diary of Aya Kito, a young Japanese girl who was diagnosed with the degenerative disease spinocerebellar degeneration at age fifteen. The book is a personal account of her decade long struggle against the disease which inspired the 2004 movie and 2005 TV series of the same name.
