The first part of this drama displays an initial bet of sorts between God and Mephistopheles(the devil) in heaven that the devil can get the soul of God's favorite human, Faust. The devil manifests himself into the form of a dog who follows Faust home from a walk that he decides to take after pondering suicide due to his apparent inability to learn all infinite knowledge. Enter the devil making a deal with Faust to serve him in his life on Earth in exchange for Faust working in hell. It takes convincing, but Faust eventually signs the contract with Mephistopheles in his blood, sealing it for good. The second part of this drama is starkly different to the originally romantic story of Faust, instead developing separate themes in five acts of new adventures for the character. Faust does eventually make it to heaven, having lost only half of the bet between God and the devil.
