In this novel, similar to "Perks Of Being A Wallflower", Laurel is given the assignment of writing to a dead person. Laurel, who has lost her sister, May, chooses Kurt Cobain who her sister liked and also died young. Laurel begins writing more letters to other people such as Janis Joplin, Heath Ledger and Amy Winehouse. What started off as an English assignment becomes a way of coping and navigating through high school and through these letters, Laurel may be able to accept the truth about what has happened to May.
