Alex has escaped from Rule, a religious community that has been housing Spared teens, only to run into a group of Changed. Instead of eating her immediately, they force her travel along with them as a traveling food source with several other people. While with them, Alex soon learns that the Changed are much smarter than originally thought to be and that she has an odd connection with the Changed group's leader, Wolf.
