This is an ambiguous tale of a governess, a house keeper, two strange yet beautiful children, and two figures who may or may not be ghosts. The whole premise of the book is that the reader must judge for him/herself whether or not Ms. Jessel and Peter Quint are ghost or are they the mad imaginings of an unnamed governess (who is also the narrator) who took on a job that was perhaps too much for her. The job, of course, is seeing to the well-being, education, and general happiness of Flora and Miles. Flora and Miles are the young children placed in the care of their uncle after a vague military situation took their parents from the world. The uncle is young, rich, and very handsome; so the governess is persuaded easily to take the job, and not call him under any circumstance because if she does a good job he will come visit their potential new home; but it's not long before she sees strange evil creatures. However, there is no proof, no other witnesses, to these creatures. What truly happened to Miles? That's for the reader to decide.
