It's 1872, Rachel is 15 years old. Her father gets fired from his job at a newpaper office and decides to move the family to Boston. Rachel is forced to sell her pony, Ginger. James, Rachel's older brother, looks for a job at the local firehouse and Rachel tags along. She takes on a wounded mare and nurses her back to health for the fire company.
