I have a really old version that my aunt gave to my cousin, who then gave it to me when I was around 12. The type with no title on the front, just green leather with a gold, really faded border. I love it to pieces as well as the story, I really like the language that's used and Mr Rochester is by far one of my favourite fictional characters.

I love Jane Eyre from start to finish.
I prefer it to Wuthering Heights. I find the characters fascinating, although I get annoyed by Adele. :L
The TV series is amazing too. I've watched it 4 times this week. :L

I have a quick question. I have a funny feeling that Rochester isn't meant to be attractive in the novel. Is that about right? Or did I misread something at some point in the novel?

I love Jane Eyre (although I actually prefer Wuthering Heights as far as Bronte classics go), and I'm pretty certain that Mr. Rochester is not considered to be a universally attractive man.

In the book, though, Jane describes his features as "not beautiful, according to rule; but they were more than beautiful to me," which I think is perfect enough. :)

So a HOT Michael Fassbender is not an accurate way to depict him in a film then, or; (for anyone has seen the film) is it presented through her eyes and thus the attractiveness makes sense?

When I was sparknoting Jane Eyre for my English Lit exam last trimester, there was this whole thing on Bertha Mason and that was the most intriguing thing ever. Like, you just think she's this mad woman who creates conflict because Rochester is already married. But she's Jane's inner voice and the inner 'passion/aggression' or whatever. :) I thought that was all rather crafty. :)

reviving this thread from the grave but no, even Jane doesn't actually see Rochester as attractive. She said when she first met him that, had he been attracted, she would not have approached him.

Also, anyone interested in Bertha should read Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys. It's a very good novella, and gives an interesting view of what could have caused Bertha to become mad. (Not that I liked it, but I can't deny how good it is.)

If you've read the novel and would like to add it to your Mibba booklist, you can do so here.

This is an absolutely lovely book. My friend was reading it before me, and I watched the movie too before reading it but it did not affect my reading on it. I find this realistic fairy tale to be worth wiled and heavily sarcastic at the end. "Reader, I married him." is one of my favorite quotes as you can almost hear Bronte criticizing the Victorian ideals <3
