I'm doing A Level English Literature, and we have to use a book as a stimulus text for a short story.
All the authors I chosen have been denied by the board. Anne Rice, Richard Laymon, Dean Koontz, Stephen King, James Herbert, and other authors along those lines.
They were denied because they aren't 'challenging' enough and aren't 'real literature'.

So I need to find a book, that has the same themes and styles as the ones above. Like, horror/fantasy/thriller types.
But they need to be more, classic literature. I was wondering if anyone knew of any books I could use.
I was thinking Kidnapped. That's the only kind of, interesting book I can think of currently. Suggestions?

Sorry for the long winded post.

Lord of the Rings? I'm not sure if that would work but it is fantasy and The Fellowship was written in 1964, The Hobbit in 1937.

Alice in Wonderland, A Clockwork Orange, The Chronicles of Narnia (actually, that's a long shot, but still), Brave New World, Orlando, The Handmaid's Tale (I recommend that, it's really good) and maybe The War of the Worlds or The Day of the Triffids.

I think all of those are quite literary.

I haven't read it but my Lit teacher put 'Dune' by Frank Herbert on our list of classics, I think it's fantasy. I don't know if it's what you're looking for or if it's any good, but give it a look?

    Or... Dracula? Frankenstein?
I second Dune. Both the first novel and the whole series are just beyond amazing. It's one of the few books I reread obsessively.
Though Virginia Woolf's Orlando -I'm assuming you're talking about that Orlando- is also amazing.

    Yeah, it is.
I mean, I read the synopsis - basically, beautiful Elizabethan man wakes up as a woman and spends the next few centuries hanging around with famous poets - and that was it. I absolutely had to read it. xD

I was actually thinking of Day Of The Triffids.
I picked it up in the library a couple of days ago.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I'll check some of them out! =D

So I'm looking for kind of an historical fantasy. With folklore and stuff. I've recently read Juliet Marillier's Sevenwater Series and I adored it! I must have more like it!

Well this probably isn't exactly what you're looking for, but I think it's an amazing series. It alternates between 21st Century England and a parallel world of Renaissance Italy, incorporating some historical facts and legends with twists.
    Here's the site: Stravaganza.
If you read it, please let me know what you think in the thread that I made for it. I don't know anyone else on Mibba who's read it yet! Cry
Also, it's young adult fiction. Just in case that affects your decision.

Okay, thanks for the suggestion! I'll try to get my hands on it as soon as I can! And I love young adult fiction, so that's fine.

Okay, my brother is 12 years old and won't read anything except fishing magazinges currently (except at school, when he has to read other stuff).

What I need is something to get him reading more again. The last book he read at home was The Old Man and the Sea, which he liked. What I'm looking for is something that preferably contains fish/fishing, and is suitable for a young person to read.

My favorite book of all time is One Flew Over the Cukoo's Nest by Ken Kesey. I absolutely loved the main character, R. P. McMurphy and I loved how Bromden was the narrator of the story instead of McMurphy. So, what I'm looking for is a book about an "out of the box" /crazy character (like McMurphy) and his story is told by someone who is there with him throughout the story. Ideally, I'd like the story to take place anywhere in between the period of the 1920s all the way up to the early 1970s.

If you know of anything, please let me know. :)

I'm looking for something that's dark and twisted. And by twisted, I don't mean high school dramaz about somebody cheating on somebody and getting their reputation ruined. Like... no Gossip Girl type stuff. It can be YA or just normal, adult fiction, but I'd almost prefer adult.

If it helps any, some of my absolute favorite books are the Dollanganger series by V.C. Andrews. You know, the one that starts with Flowers in the Attic. It's such a twisted series, and is an example of what I'm looking for.

Try the book version of West Side Story. I've heard that's a lot like The Outsiders. I can't remember for the life of me who wrote it though. :/

Does anyone know of any good books, where the main character is completely dysfunctional? I like reading books like that. XD
