I was 15 when I got my tonsils taken out. I had had what my doctor called cryptic tonsillitis (basically meaning my tonsils had deep pockets), and this lasted a whole year, along with frequent strep. I asked my mom if I could get my tonsils out, and she asked my doctor if it would be a good idea and she said yes.
The surgery wasn't bad; they stuck me with an IV (after missing a few times), and then put me under. They took out my tonsils and some of my adenoids. When I woke up, I stuck around for a couple hours and then went home with prescription painkillers (liquid, so it wouldn't irritate my throat).
I missed a total of three days of school, because my mom wanted me to, but I didn't experience much pain at all; I had a little bit of discomfort but I only took my pain meds about half of the time and I was good. The only thing I hated was the taste of burning anytime I ate or drank something. They cauterized my throat instead of cutting and stitching (or whatever other methods they use), so I was tasting my own throat. It lasted for about a month.
The only part that was somewhat painful was my constant yawning, which was a result of the painkillers I was taking. The yawning didn't feel good to my throat and I counted twenty yawns in a minute at one point.
