British Universities!

(please delete this if there is another thread, I've looked and haven't found one)

Hey!
I'm from England, taking my AS levels now - and there's a huge fuss at my college about Universities, applying, UCAS etc. I've recently booked some open days, but I was wondering, where do you guys want to go and what do you want to do at Uni?

OR, are you not going to Uni? if not, why not?
Im still very undecided about the whole thing, and I'd love to hear your thoughts :)

I suppose it's a bit different because 'College' in Britain is different to in America.

I am English but I hope to go to university in Scotland.
Why? Because I think Scottish universities are better.

I want to do English and Spanish at Edinburgh. I have an offer, but obviously, I need to get the grades. If you have any burning questions about UCAS or applications then you can always PM me because I've been through it all this year so maybe I can help or give advice. xD

Well... I'm not English... I'm actually Australian, and I do live in Australia, but I want to do an exchange to the University of Worcester... apparently if I get good enough grades and shiz in my first couple of years at the University of South Australia, I can do the exchange to there and Uni SA will pay for it all. =]

And, as to what I want to do, I want to study Primary and Middle Education, if I can get the TER that I need. If not, I'll do Primary and Middle Education/Science, because it has a much lower TER.

I skipped a year and I'm a year eleven now... one more year and I'll be in Uni... eep. There's a massive fuss about it at my school, we're learning all about TAFE and Uni, and we have to decide what we want to do now, because our year twelve subjects depend entirely on what we want to do... oh Lord. I have to do five Hess General subjects to get my TER... >_<

I am hopefully going to Derby University in September/October. I have a conditional offer, I just need the UCAS points for it.

It took me all my first year at college to decide whether or not to apply. At school, I didn't like the idea, but as I found out more information about it all, I came round to it. And then I had to decide what course to do, and that took a long time as well, cause I'm stupidly indecisive.

But I managed to decide on Creative Writing, and here we are now. :cute:

Anyway, I can only really afford to go to university in Scotland so I plan to apply to St. Andrew's (), Edinburgh, Glasgow and possibly University of the West of Scotland, QMU or Stirling.

Well, I'd really love to go to Oxford or somewhere, but so would thousands of other people :shifty.
I love Edinburgh university too, but I'll probably end up going to one in London.

I applied to both Edinburgh and St Andrews (and got offers from both) but although I know St Andrews is a fantastic uni, I just never thought it'd be quite right for me. Just my personal feeling, though xD

Whenever I go there, it just feels right. I know that's not something I should base my decision on, but for me St. Andrew's is perfect.

I hate how the title of the thread is British Universities, then the subtitle says Good Old England. It's like when people from other countries say England when they mean Britain or the UK.

Provided I can afford it.

^^ I'm considering applying there for Physics with Medical Application. People from there came to the drama class I was at, and they said it was brilliant and really nice (I used to live in Paisley and it's nice too).

I think it does come down to gut instinct, really. Every time I've been to Edinburgh (admittedly, twice xD) I've just really loved it.

That said, even for me as an English student, it's a cheaper option to study in Scotland.

I'm hoping to go to Cardiff, purely because it's a city I'm familiar with and easy to access from Ireland. London fills that criteria too, but it's a little bit expensive for me. My boyfriend's going to London this autumn, either the Royal College of Music or the Academy of Contemporary Music. He already has his place and everything, doesn't need to worry about points, since it's an audition thing. But he's from London, so he'll probably live with his Dad over there, he's kinda sorted on the accommodation and food front.

I like the idea of Cardiff, though, they have a good journalism degree, and a journalism with film degree, which is perfect for me. I was talking to one of the journalists in the newspaper I write for, and he told me that a good way to succeed in journalism is to take a journalism with *blank* degree, so it seems like a sensible choice.

That said, Scotland has definitely been drawing me lately - mostly the fees thing! I only really know one person over there, though..my Mum's godchild, Emma, is doing physiotherapy in Aberdeen. Aberdeen doesn't offer a journalism course, though, which means I have absolutely no clue of what other unis are like. Stirling, Napier, RGU, GCU and UWS all offer journalism degrees, but since I have no knowledge of them, I'm really uncertain of which to go for. I'm nearly leaning towards UWS, just because it's in Paisley and I'd (kinda) know Paolo Nutini. I'm being serious, he's the only person in Scotland I even remotely know, and I only know him because my boyfriend works in the recording studio he recorded his new album in. It's kinda intimidating to move to a new place, knowing nobody, so I'm just clutching at straws.

Yeah, Edinburgh is beautiful, but because I live there and Glasgow (divorced parents, joint custody etc.) I want nothing more than to escape. :oops:. And I figured that I grew up in a big city, will probably end up working in a big city, so it would be different.

If I was going to do languages (I think you mentioned you were?) I would want to go to ebdinburgh, because my sister's there doing French and Italian and she talks about it like it's heaven on earth!

I don't think that's at the same campus as my course (Ayr) so I can't say what it's like. The Ayr campus looks like it's ready to fall down. I'm glad they're doing it up.
And my Biology teacher studied at Paisley and he says it's really rough but great for the night life.

No, I don't. Thankfully. I'd be uber screwed if I did.
But I sitll have to move away and find a job in the middle of a recession. I've never passed an interview in my life and only got the job I've got now because my friend works there and my boss couldn't be bothered doing interviews XD Hopefully I can just get a transfer.

Out of interest, Oxford or Cambridge? And which college? I have been obsessed with those universities since I was about 3 :oops: I'm not going to apply there though.
