I want to go to Sheffield, NOT HALLAM, Sheffield.

It's really nice, and because I'm on a course I could get into a medicine degree with 2 Bs and an A, instead of the standard 2 As and a B.

Yeah, Edinburgh is beautiful, but because I live there and Glasgow (divorced parents, joint custody etc.) I want nothing more than to escape.. And I figured that I grew up in a big city, will probably end up working in a big city, so it would be different.

If I was going to do languages (I think you mentioned you were?) I would want to go to ebdinburgh, because my sister's there doing French and Italian and she talks about it like it's heaven on earth!
    Ah fair enough.
Yes I am doing languages and that's good to know because I was considering doing Italian for my 3rd subject Shifty
    Schaunard:
Out of interest, Oxford or Cambridge? And which college? I have been obsessed with those universities since I was about 3  I'm not going to apply there though.
I think you should go for it (we've had this conversation before aha).
It's one choice out of five, you're going to lose nothing by doing it, and if you don't then you might always think 'well, if I had...what if?'
I'm pretty sure that if you're St Andrews material, then you should give Oxbridge a shot too. And if you apply then it's an excuse to visit and if you get asked to an interview then both Oxford and Cambridge are lovely places to hang around in for a couple of days. Well, I've never been to Cambridge, but Oxford is a lovely little city anyway.

^^ It's the "what if?" thing that's making me consider it.

I have almost 2 years to consider it :) Though I'm pretty sure my nerves ruined my exams :(

I'm in year 11 at the moment, although I hope to either go to Oxford or Cambridge. Cambridge is the better University, however I would like to study a Maths and Pysics degree (majoring in Maths) and then a Maths PhD. Oxford would probably be the better option in that case since they excel at Mathematisc.
I really would like to get in and I am going to do a Pre-Uniersity course next year in order to get used to their style of learning a bit more. That course will be in Pysics and I shall also be taking A-Levels in Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry and History. I am hoping my subjects will be beneficial for my course choice and History will prove my writing abilities and versatiliy.

Yeah, you have ages to think it over.
I think I only finalised my plans two days before I sent the UCAS form off in October. xD

And don't worry too much about your results until you have them, okay?

Well, with all due respect, they're both pretty fantastic. And equally hard to get into.
I wouldn't say that 'Cambride is the best'. It differs from table to table. The Guardian have Oxford at the top and Cambridge are top in the Times, I think - but why am I talking about league tables. They're nothing to base a decision on so I should probably shut up now.

I don't think Cambridge do a specific Physics degree - I say this only because I was talking to one of my old friends from school over Facebook and she's been accepted to do Natural Sciences, but she's really keen on the Physics so I assume there's lots of opportunity to specialise. Also, a small word of advice here, but if you're hoping to apply to university then you should get used to spelling Physics right, you're gonna have to write a personal statement on it and good spelling is an absolute must :shifty

i still have a long way to go,
considering i havent even done my GCSE's yet.
but both of my parents went to oxford, and i too
have had my heart set on it since i was a little
kid. my brother applied to cambridge and got in,
but dropped out pretty soon after.
theyre both very difficult to get into,
and i'm going to have to work my socks off,
i guess i'd be grateful to go to any uni though.
but oxford really would be amazing.

I hate how the title of the thread is British Universities, then the subtitle says Good Old England. It's like when people from other countries say England when they mean Britain or the UK. Disgust
    Ah! Sorry man!
It's a bad habit, I need to sort it out.... :P

And wow this thread got a lot of replies suddenly :)

Im off to look around Bath Spa University this coming Saturday, so that should be fun!
I want to study Dance though, so I'm really really hoping to get into Laban *dreams*
It will NEVER happen though :P

I would laaaaaav to go to Cardiff. I want to study English and German, and I live in Cardiff so it would be soo much easier. Apparently Cardiff uni is really hard to get into though :( I dunno. I haven't even started Sixth Form yet, for all I know I may start to hate the subjects :L

Well, that depends on what grades you're expecting, and how strong your application is.
Cardiff is a top uni but I wouldn't say it was intimidatingly hard to get into. There are harder unis to get a place at.

You seem really keen on it so I would definitely apply. You'll never know unless you do, after all (:

Well if I get the grades I'll be going to Queens in Belfast to study Social Anthropology. I can't wait!

I actually thought in passing about going to Oxford or Cambrigde and I hated the idea. They just seemed too big and scary! I think I'd be under far too much pressure (from myself) if I went and I have the idea everyone would look down on me. Not to mention theres a girl in my class who got a conditional for both and she's a friggen genius, just makes me realise I'm not smart enough. XD Oh well.

You can't apply for both :shifty

At least, not if you go through UCAS. And I think UCAS is the only way to apply. I could be wrong there, though.

With UCAS, there are certain other rules limiting what you can apply for. Like only being able to apply for 4 medicine, dentistry or vet medicine courses, rather than five.

Really? I don't know, she told me she she got into both and was debating which one to go to. XD I don't know how she applied though. Maybe I heard wrong XD

If you apply through UCAS (and I don't know of any other way to apply, although I could be wrong), you may only apply to one. It's stated on the UCAS guidelines. Actually, you can apply to both if you're a postgrad, I didn't think of that before.

I don't know if all schools do "career interviews", but mine does, so I had to talk to someone from Career Scotland about options once I leave school. Anyway, one thing really annoyed me - she had already seen my records, expected grades, reports from teachers and everything, but said she wad "suprised" I was so set on going to university "given my background". Cry Cry She was meaning that my 3 step-brothers left school and didn't sit exam, and my dad and step dad both left school to get jobs that didn't require qualifications. I just thought that was completely out of line, especially since I'm a good student, and my sister (who, of course had the same "background" ) is studying at Edinburgh.

That is a completely unacceptable thing to say.
They're supposed to encourage you to aim for higher education, not make sly comments about your background and make out that you shouldn't try to achieve. I mean, neither of my parents went to university, I never thought of it as a disadvantage. I don't think it should be surprising for anyone in Britain to want to go to university in this day and age.

Don't let some silly career adviser put you off or make you feel bad about yourself. Your 'background' means nothing if you have the dedication and the motivation. And it obviously didn't do your sister any harm, either.

I've pretty much got my heart set on St. George's Medical School (University of London) because of the course they provide, their syllabus and honestly, it was mainly because it's in London.
