I have to thank Lestat for telling me there was going to be a TV series for these books.

So, I've watched the trailers, read what LJ Smith had to say about it on her blog, and talked to some friends about the whole thing. In all honesty... I'm not sure how I feel about this whole thing. I am kind of wishing that it was not being made into a television series.

Let me explain. I feel like it's going to stray away from the book a lot. That's the problem with television series that are based off of books. There is absolutely no way you can keep them in chronological order unless you want one episode to be filled and packed with action and the next to be slightly boring with viewers falling asleep. I mean, look what happened to Gossip Girl - that (also presented by the CW) strayed far from the original order of the books. And already we can see the Vampire Diaries straying from the book - Elena doesn't even have blonde hair. Which may seem like a small problem, but it's a problem that's easily fixed but was not.

I feel like these books should have stayed books to help keep their original value and purpose. I feel like if they absolutely had to do something with the books, a movie would've been better because that way it easier to keep the general plot of the story, and it would not be as choppy and confusing. And, just to point it out: LJ Smith, author of the books, said that she, too, did not like the idea of it becoming a TV series in her blog.

Regardless of all of this, I think I will watch it for the sake of seeing how it comes out. But now I'd like to know about your opinions. What do you think - should they have bothered? Like the idea of a TV show, or hate it?

Like I said earlier... there are some books that should be left alone and stay books - not movies, TV dramas... anything - for the sake of keeping them with the value they began with. I think that this is one of those cases.

The show premieres on the CW this fall (2009).

I had a feeling you'd create this thread. :tehe: And I'm glad you did - I was too scared to, since I'm only on the first book.

So far, compared with the trailers, it does look good, but there are a lot of scenes I'm seeing in the trailers that are not in the book. I'm just hoping that they haven't given away much, and that they've kept the vital scenes in there.

Still, I'm excited for this. As a vampire show it looks quite promising. As an adaptation from the books... well, we'll have to see.

I don't like what I've seen so far. Already they screwed up Elena's hair color, one of the easiest things, and how Bonnie looks. I think they should make it into a movie, not a TV show. I'll still watch it but I'll be complaining a lot.

I have to agree. They're already messing up simple things. omgno: And, as said in the first post, what happen to Gossip Girl wasn't good at all - that got all jumbled up, and it's the same producer and whatnot.

I think authors should be involved in some things so that the show or movie or whatever's being made can turn out to be the best it can be.

^ Yeah. Although the change in hair colour isn't exactly a huge failure. It could still be a good TV show.
In QOTD Lestat didn't have blonde hair, but it was still a good film, despite that (even if it totally strayed from the books, but let's forget that for the moment).

Personally though I think some changes in plots or changes of events can be good for a film/show. I just hope the changes they don't change it too much or for the worse.

I haven't read the books, but I don't think the show will last as long as Buffy or Angel did. Vampires haven't done well in the visual media for a couple years now, but I would like to see this show atleast make it to season two. Even if it doesn't match up with the books, it's something way different than bratty teenagers and their thirty year old relationships with each other.

I personally think that blonde haired heroins are overused in media. A lot of the time the "sexy" girls are the blonde ones who just happen to be super smart, and the brunettes are always the bitchy ones. Think of it as a win for pretty non-blondes.

    CW's Vampire Diaries site.
    Wikipedia:
The official synopsis: "Four months after the tragic car accident that killed their parents, 17-year-old Elena Gilbert and her 15-year-old brother, Jeremy are still trying to cope with their grief and move on with their lives. Elena has always been the star student; beautiful, popular and involved with school and friends, but now she finds herself struggling to hide her sadness from the world. As the school year begins, Elena and her friends are fascinated by a handsome and mysterious new student, Stefan Salvatore. Stefan and Elena are immediately drawn to one another, and Elena has no way of knowing that Stefan is a centuries-old vampire, struggling to live peacefully among humans, while his brother Damon is the embodiment of vampire violence and brutality. Now these two vampire brothers - one good, one evil - are at war for Elena’s soul and for the souls of her friends, family and all the residents of the small town of Mystic Falls, Virginia."

Hmm, I see they swapped Elena's 4 year old sister for a 15 year old brother. But I guess that's either to appeal more to the audience, or for some reason to do with the plot.

I finished the first book the other night and have started the second. Granted, I can see why fans of the book might not like the show. From the trailers you can already see that it strays from the book several times.

And I agree with ghosthorse that I hope it gets to at least season 2. But it wont be as successful as Buffy or Angel, and that's quite obvious. Not many TV shows reach that kind of success. Vampire ones or not.

Still, I look forward to this show. :tehe:

By the way, one of the first things I thought when I first saw Stefan was how similar he looked to...Edward. I wonder if they did that on purpose.
    I mean, look:

(Sorry for the crappy screen cap)

But still. Stefan > Edward. :snob

I have not read the books, I heard that there not all that good but I've seen previews for the show and it intrigues me... and I see what you mean about the Stefan-Edward look alike, maybe they did do on purpose since Twilight is so popular.

Hm. Things happened all a little fast in the first book, in my opinion. I think a show might work better in a way, since things in the plot will develop slower.

And yeah, that's what I was thinking, Ckaye.

[Sorry, I'm posting on this thread like every other post. :XD. I just like...discussing it.]

Well if I can I'm going to check the show out, and I think I'll check out the first book too.

I couldnt find the books on Audible.com so I will have to go to the library next week and look into the books, the show looks interesting, I may wait to see the first episode before I decide if I like it or not.

I love the books, but when I watch the show I'm going to have to remind myself it is different.

They are filming in my city. It's such an inconvenience too. I went to watch last night and I want to know what was with all the candles and sparklers.

^ Yeah, I'll have to do that too. The two look very different. Still, it can be nice having something different acted out on the screen. Otherwise you'll just know everything that's going to happen from the books. And we all know TV shows are big on cliffhangers and suspense. :tehe:

Wow, in your city? That's pretty cool! :XD Oh, well, I can see how it would be an inconvenience though. Candles and sparklers? Hmm.

The one major difference is the city name, I think, Mastic Falls?
My sister isn't happy about it. She kept on mumbling about how it's wrong.

Really blury picture, that you can't tell what it is. That's was with the candles and stuff. It was strange. You would here the director yell something and they all chanted or something.

The business got a free paint job! It use to be an ugly tan color.

    Hmm, how odd. :XD

But yeah, they changed it from Fells Church to Mystic Falls, right? Mystic Falls does sound quite nice, but... they didn't really have to do that.

I agree. I love the books, but they shouldn't make a series, I also will watch but I doubt I will like it much.

    I found this on youtube.

It's a long trailer, but it really makes me want to see this show more and more, probably because I have not read the books.

What is up with the school name? Mystic Falls that is so cheesy.

^ That just looks like a load of separate trailers mashed together in one video. :XD

I just realised this show premiers in one month! Wow

To be honest, though, from the clips available, it looks like a lot happens in the pilot episode. I don't really understand pilot episodes all that well, though. But, I mean, Damon coming in that soon? Huh? :XD

My mom watched caught sight of that trailer I posted, and she saw it when they first showed Damon and I swear she had an instant orgasm.
