    I have CS5 for all my Adobe softwares, thanks to my school... but I seriously hate it. Well, just the magic wand tool, for Photoshop. I like CS4 better. Though when I do pixel art, I like MSPaint. Photoshop's fill tool just doesn't do it.
    Ever tried giving GIMP a chance?

    I've got Photoshop CS2 with Imageready. :) I used to have Elements 6 but to me it got outdated. I know I kind of went back in time, but the features are just what I needed for my graphic/web work. :) Worked out perfectly for me!

    It's for Linux, but there are Mac and PC versions as well.

    I use CS4 at work a lot for graphic design. I'm going to be sad when I have to give it up.

    I have a very old copy of good, plain ol’ Photoshop CS. No numbers, just CS. Every trial I’ve ever taken for doing graphic design has run out, so I’ve resorted to GIMP and the occasional use of CS. I also have a few of the very earliest Photoshops from before Creative Suite, but let us not bring up the dark days.

    What version do you all recommend for doing things such as banners and icons? I'm looking into abusing the power of student discounts and wanted to test the waters before i got anything.

    I want CS6 for Christmas (it was my big present, fingers crossed!) for the use of gifs and making more banners, and such. I've always always wanted to be able to do gifs and with Photoshop Elements it doesn't work for me. I'm also using a Mac, though, so it could be that...

    I don't know. I just hope CS6 makes my graphic design much more fun :)

    @ soft skeletons.
    I was a CS5 user for a few years and recently bought myself CS6 a few months ago. I love it. I use it to make gifs, banners, icons, ect and it's perfect. I'm also on a Mac, so I believe it was just Elements that wasn't letting you do it. ( I never had it so I can't be sure. ) I'm changing my major to Web Development and Graphic Design and it's loads of fun. ^^

    @ Marinesister92
    I suggest going to adobe's website and downloading a free trial of Photoshop CS6 (regular, not extended) to see if it would be the right program for you. If it is, you should be able to buy a product key from the website with a student discount to keep it going. Any of the Photoshop CS editions should be great for making banners and icons. If the price is still too steep for what your use of it, you can always use pixlr.com. It's free and extremely similar to Photoshop. Plus, it's all online so you don't need to worry about downloads.

    I got a student's discount on Adobe Creative Cloud, which included Photoshop CS6. I mainly use Photoshop and sometimes GIMP.

    Elements won't let you do Gifs period. I have a PC, and I had Elements once upon a time. Lol

    I just got CS6. I really don't see the difference from CS2 (but then again I don't use it that much)

    I have CS6 as well, and its basically the same as cs4 and 5 I didn't notice any real difference besides the layout tbh. Even then the layout is very similar, I knew where everything was, not that I WANT that to change but yeah lol

    @ Zhang Yixing;
    I think the greatest thing about CS6 is the fact that if my computer reboots, goes dead, or something like that, CS6 has the autosave. And it will bring what I was working on back up :3

    Haha I've done that many a time xD I was working on a shirt design for work one day, and my computer died. And it was ready to cry, because what I was doing was so long and tedious. And it popped up and I was like, Hallelujah! Rofl.
