born Sigismund Schlomo Freud (6 May 1856 – 23 September 1939), was an Austrian neurologist who founded the psychoanalytic school of psychology.[1] Freud is best known for his theories of the unconscious mind and the defense mechanism of repression and for creating the clinical practice of psychoanalysis for curing psychopathology through dialogue between a patient and a psychoanalyst. Freud is also renowned for his redefinition of sexual desire as the primary motivational energy of human life, as well as his therapeutic techniques, including the use of free association, his theory of transference in the therapeutic relationship, and the interpretation of dreams as sources of insight into unconscious desires.

He certainly had some interesting theories. I'm not hugely educated on his philosophy, but I'm familiar with the basics.

The 'Freudian Slip', coined after him, has always both intrigued and amused me. :tehe:

Pretty much the same as what she said, but in my AP Psych class this year, we're supposed to learn all about him. My teacher loves him.

He focused too much on repression in terms of psychological behaviour, but I'm telling you some of his theories have a little sense in them.
However his "Little Hans" study is the most bizarre thing I have heard in my life. That's examiner bias at it's finest.

Then discuss his philosophy of which you haven't.

It just feels like an extension of the Psychoanalytical theory.

Isn't he mostly discredited these days?
Hm. Maybe that's just with regards to mental health care and stuff like that.

yeah, but Jung still has his merits.
Freud's theories leave room for doubt, as most theories tend to do, but his are remarkably filled with holes.
he may be one of the most famous, but he's certainly not the most credited, you're right.

he does have very bizarre theories but there are some things that he comes up with that i find do make some sense. I got a bit tired of the fact that nearly everything came from a sexual repression.
Didnt he do cocaine or something? I seem to remember something like that... He might have dies because of it and if he did, I will feel incredibly stupid.

Most of his theories were based on the sexual nature of human beings... they're interesting to read, but the most difficult point of view of psychology to actually implement in real cases. Freud implemented psychoteraphy, one of the most used in personality disorder cases; however, this psychological approach is not of the best ones to follow, for there are many reasons as to why I person behaves a certain way.

I remember I read somewhere that Freud lusted after his child... I'm not sure if that's true, so... if anyone knows, could you clarify that?

He's mostly discredited because all of his research was based on case studies, right?

    Mostly.

And that the whole Id, Ego and Superego thing is discredited due to the dual hypothesis (i.e having a brain and a mind that are seperate) being discredited.

He was a pioneer in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. Most of his theories have been revised or rejected, but he holds great importance as explorer of human consciousness and sexuality. Just because most of his work is now outdated doesn't diminish his role. I should note that some of his works are still used today.

And he explored uses for cocaine in medical purposes, though it didn't quite work out for the best lol.

As for lusting for a child, I don't know where you heard that, but I doubt it (not because it's impossible or because he was awesome, but because we would've heard about it).

^ He did bring about the whole idea of the unconsciousness which is a huge achievement and where a lot of interest still lies.

I'm rather facinated with him. He was such a sexist man, but he did so much to further the knowledge in Psychology.
