I'm not sure how far this is true but I heard he committed suicide. Makes you think twice about how correct his theories were.;)

In September 1939 he prevailed on his doctor and friend Max Schur to assist him in suicide. Schur administered three doses of morphine over many hours that resulted in Freud's death on 23 September 1939.

He was a heavy smoker :tehe: I guess he was fixated on the oral stage for such a long time...

He killed himself. Has nothing to do with his credibility though. At least in my opinion.

I'm still confused as to why this is here, like someone else has stated, since all of the things people have brought up were his pyshcology theories.

So can someone please list ONE of his so called philosophical arguments to me?

I wouldn't personally categorise Freud as a 'philosopher' either. His psychology was very ground breaking I know, but honestly, I find some of his psychological theories dubious as well.

The one thing he is to be praised for is forcing people to treat mental illness with greater sympathy, and widening horizons at least in terms of how the mentally ill were treated. Until Freud came along, people were far too 'scientific' about these things and considered people with mental illnesses to be right offs in society's terms. In this sense at least he's to be commended.

Lol does any one knwo whhhy syn said that and it makes sense?

It's cause Freud suggests "penis envy" that girls are jealous of their mothers for their fathers affection and guys are jealous of their dads for their moms affection. He goes as far to say that in some way we sexually desire them or people like them.

So it makes it even funnier! lol I laughed when Syn said it just because he was messing with the guy about the bands name but after I remembered the name from some where and the I remembered who he actually was and it became hilarious!

    Mostly.

And that the whole Id, Ego and Superego thing is discredited due to the dual hypothesis (i.e having a brain and a mind that are seperate) being discredited.
Seriously it's totally discredited by all? Then why do they still teach it if it's discredited I seem to think that it makes an amount of sense

but the entire thing was a flop because turns out..someone already did the study...
some people just thought he was a nut and his theories were wrong because of the drug use..
    but eh,what do i know.=p

Most of his theories were based on the sexual nature of human beings... they're interesting to read, but the most difficult point of view of psychology to actually implement in real cases. Freud implemented psychoteraphy, one of the most used in personality disorder cases; however, this psychological approach is not of the best ones to follow, for there are many reasons as to why I person behaves a certain way.

I remember I read somewhere that Freud lusted after his child... I'm not sure if that's true, so... if anyone knows, could you clarify that?
I can't guarantee it, but I can certainly say it was most likely possible. Freud stated that sons secretly lust to have sex with their mothers and daughters lust to have sex with their fathers. When sons and daughters realize that they could never do that, they end up finding a mate who acts like their mother and father; respectively.

    Creepy, in my opinion.

I haven't read a lot from him but what I've read I don't agree with.
I most certainly do NOT want to do my dad, and I DON'T want to have a penis. Period. The second I see a resembles between a guy and my father, I run in the opposite direction, even if he's just the same astral sign lol

We covered many of his theories when we focussed on the psychodynamic theory. Freud is, after all, the father. (Given his theories concerning parental figures, there's certainly a pun to be gained from that! har har...)

Our friend, Mr. Freud likes cocaine. can't blame him. He inspires me ^^
but i think he based things too much on the unconscious mind. I'm not saying he's wrong, 'cause he's like the start of modern psychology.

Most of his theories were absurd. He placed way too much importance on sex in the human psyche. But he definitely paved the way for modern behaviorism and neuroscience.

Oh, this was on Tumblr again the other day and now it feels appropriate. I think Freud offers useful tools to talk about some things (e.g. gender, language, etc) so he is still relevant / significant - perhaps they're not the bestest of tools, but now that Western thought already thinks through Freud, it seems like there's little we could do about it except try to make the best of it.

Freud is/was a crazy dude but without him we wouldn't know some of the things we do today about the way children grow and process thoughts and feelings

All of Freud's theory is in the field of philosophical speculation/metaphysics. It's not a question of arguments, but of method.
You wouldn't call it science, would you?

Jean Piaget does a SO much better job than Freud explaining children development. Like, in realistic terms, since Piaget worked with real children -including his own- while Freud basically went crazy in his own wonderland.

I think Freud's theories are nearly useless, to be honest. Dude's done too much cocaine for his own good.

    I can't see how.
Only if you consider that the first behaviorists were pissed off seeing Psychoanalysis wasn't solving anyone's problems (rather the opposite) and decided to start their own research.
