I'm not sure how far this is true but I heard he committed suicide. Makes you think twice about how correct his theories were.;)

In September 1939 he prevailed on his doctor and friend Max Schur to assist him in suicide. Schur administered three doses of morphine over many hours that resulted in Freud's death on 23 September 1939.

He killed himself. Has nothing to do with his credibility though. At least in my opinion.

Seriously it's totally discredited by all? Then why do they still teach it if it's discredited I seem to think that it makes an amount of sense
- The Doctor:
- Mostly.
And that the whole Id, Ego and Superego thing is discredited due to the dual hypothesis (i.e having a brain and a mind that are seperate) being discredited.
lol...

He was a heavy smoker :tehe: I guess he was fixated on the oral stage for such a long time...
I can't guarantee it, but I can certainly say it was most likely possible. Freud stated that sons secretly lust to have sex with their mothers and daughters lust to have sex with their fathers. When sons and daughters realize that they could never do that, they end up finding a mate who acts like their mother and father; respectively.
- el sombrerero:
- Most of his theories were based on the sexual nature of human beings... they're interesting to read, but the most difficult point of view of psychology to actually implement in real cases. Freud implemented psychoteraphy, one of the most used in personality disorder cases; however, this psychological approach is not of the best ones to follow, for there are many reasons as to why I person behaves a certain way.
I remember I read somewhere that Freud lusted after his child... I'm not sure if that's true, so... if anyone knows, could you clarify that?
This reminds me so much of the song Momma's Boy by Chromeo

Creepy, in my opinion.
All of Freud's theory is in the field of philosophical speculation/metaphysics. It's not a question of arguments, but of method.
- CallusedSilk:
- So can someone please list ONE of his so called philosophical arguments to me?
Jean Piaget does a SO much better job than Freud explaining children development. Like, in realistic terms, since Piaget worked with real children -including his own- while Freud basically went crazy in his own wonderland.
- Rae-Dene:
- Freud is/was a crazy dude but without him we wouldn't know some of the things we do today about the way children grow and process thoughts and feelings
I can't see how.
- Quirky:
- Most of his theories were absurd. He placed way too much importance on sex in the human psyche. But he definitely paved the way for modern behaviorism and neuroscience.
