Types of Characters You Love

Characters who are vulnerable but also have a sort of strength within them that they find as the story progresses. I have a couple of characters like that myself that just sort of started to develop that way and it really surprised me. But I'm also seeing it in other people's stories and I just adore it. It makes me root even harder for the character.

Stubborn + Sarcastic... they have faults, unlike some characters on this sight which are completely perfect and unrealistic... not naming any names.

Characters who think things through without ending up being contemplative, characters with huge wit (because they make conversations interesting), brothers (no slash, just simply brotherly affection - I have nothing against any other kinds of siblings, though), and characters who are heartless and betray with sheer coldness. Sounds screwed up, but they usually end up being the badass of the story.

I'd like to see a smart blonde as a character. Not all blondes are dumb brats in real life; why should they be in fiction?

I love well-written ditsy girls. Those girls that are totally scatter-brained, a little eccentric, and dumber than a door handle, but are bubbly and always well-meaning. When well-written, I find them very endearing.

I love characters that love sex without having guilt over loving sex. It makes me able to relate to them. I find sex so important in story telling and I really dislike characters who are afraid of their own sexuality in that repressed Victorian way.

Sarcastic smart asses with good comebacks.

Characters that can make me laugh or smile. Not a funny stories and not a dorky kind of funny characters. Cleaver kind of funny. In moderation.

Character's who aren't necessarily happy or sad, but they aren't indifferent. And there's nothing that can really describe them, you can't put them into a catagory like hipster, popular, indie, or any of those stereotypes.

Yeah, that's a character I can relate to.

Nurturing characters.

Characters that hold on to that child-like undying sense of optimism, like Phoebe from Friends and Carlos from Big Time Rush. It's refreshing because it seems like most people tend to write more cynical, jaded characters.

- Characters who seem strong but who actually have a hidden, vulnerable side (or the other way round; seemingly vulnerable characters who possess a hidden strength).
- Cold, heartless characters.
- Witty characters.
- Characters who always stand up for what they believe in (particularly in war/dystopian/fantasy sorts of stories).

Female characters that enjoy sports but don't fall into the sporty jock stereotype.

Female characters that have strong personalities, not necessarily physical strength. Too often I see people saying that if a female character can't kick a man's ass, she's not strong.

I also love reading about characters doing normal things that we do in everday life. Going to the movies, or eating in front of the tv... Sometimes it's nice not to read about drama/action all the time.

Trickster Heroes, characters who have other talents and skills but who mostly make it by being clever, playing politics, and manipulating other people. Way too often heroes are kind of dumbasses and brains are something that get associated more with villains.

I agree with Cat. I adore the innocent ones as well. The ones who are too naive for their own good. I don't know why, but I like when those types aren't necessarily children, but teens or adults as well. I've written a character like this and he's a robot.

Characters that you adore but also spend a great deal of the time wanting to smack..

I love any character with depth. Where they're totally fleshed out and you can relate to them in one way or another, and you often forget they're fictional and you find yourself wishing they were a real person. Multi-layered. Whether they're a villain, a sweetheart, an anti-hero, or whatever else, as long as I can tell the author has spent hours meticulously and successfully bringing them to life, I'm bound to fall in love.

Though this probably sounds boring for other people to read, I adore characters that have no drama but tend to have friends that get into a lot of trouble with their significant other/other friends and try to pull the drama-free character into it, if that makes any sense.

I don't know, I just really like characters like that because I'm a very laid-back person and I never have any friend drama or guy drama, and because of that, a lot of my friends try to get me involved with their own craziness

A good villain. There's just something about someone who, for whatever reason, is just out for blood. I think it's because villains can really make or break a story.
Or even when the villain isn't necessarily a person, but like, a concept or an entire society. I love it xD
