I searched through all eight pages in the Tips section, but if there's already a thread out there like this one please lock it and direct me in that direction! Cute

As writers, we've all come across one or two particularly difficult characters to write. Which one is your difficult character to write? And why are they difficult? I'll start.

    - - -

My hardest character right now is Amelia Mulligan. She's sarcastic and witty, which are to things that I'm not naturally, so it takes a lot for me to be able to write her believably.

For me it's my novel's villain, Stancio - an homicidal sociopath who hates women. There's a lot of psychological research I have to do to get in his head, and most of the time, I don't want to be there in the first place. But, writing his history out has made it easier. A little.

None of these are posted and that's probably why, but any story where I've tried to make Brendon a complete prick. It's too difficult to write him as such.

It's so, so, SO hard to write and flesh out an entire character when all you can put is what they're writing. You have to show all his emotions and hidden motives in just what he writes and how he writes it... no actions, just "dialoge." Apparently I've been pulling him off well as a manipulative scuz-bucket, but it's so damn hard sometimes.

I'm planning this story called The Evolution of Innocence and I think the main character will be the hardest character I've ever had to write. She's very innocent and a little bit naive, and I've never really written a character like that before. It'll be a challenge but I think I'm going to really like her because she's so... hopeful. I love that in people.

He's clinically insane but so hard to pull off his high intellegence.

    Dick Drake
He's a pussy and where all the other characters aren't its hard to not make him confident too.

OCs. I just can't make them work properly on a human behavior level. They always tend to turn out this stereotypical whiny characters you see in cheap romance novels.

Whenever I do a mytho-fic, Hades is a pain in the ass to write. Disgust I don't want to make him seem like he's evil (because truly he's not) but I have to make him sort of hard and angry and standoffish, while making him approachable and lovable (to Persephone, at least) at the same time. It's very difficult for me to maintain the balance of emotions within him as a character... every time I sit down to write him I'm like "okay... time to run the gauntlet."

Mostly, characters in my horror stories, because I really don't want to make them cliché.

Alex in Hellingly was hard to write, because I wanted to make him suitably scared, but I also wanted to give him enough nerve to investigate. However, I didn't want to make him too brave, because then it would blend into stupidity: "What's that strange sound?! I'll just run towards in without any backup!"

Mariya in Mariya is also a hard character to write. She's evil and insane and a witch to boot, but she's also intelligent and has a very specific modus operandi. So she's quite difficult too.

James Maslow in Take Me to Infinity because he comes off as such a sweet and genuine guy, so it's hard for me to realistically give him any flaws because the ones that I think of giving him never mesh well.

Catalina in Nuthouse. Her mental illness reminds me of mine a few summers ago. Those were the worst weeks of my life, before I got treatment. It's hard to write the scenes where her schizophrenia takes over without worrying about my own coming back.

I've always found Remus quite difficult to write. Just because I have a desire to stick as close to canon as I possibly can, and I've always found him to be such a complex character. Especially when I'm trying to write things through his eyes (not in first person, but seeing all the situations as he sees them, such as in Unhuman) I find it difficult, because in the books you rarely see his thoughts or reasons behind saying or doing things.

But that one is about chapters and this one is about characters... Shifty
My hardest character to write is probably Evangeline Cooper in Confinement. It's easy for me to get into her head, but so hard for me to create her thoughts, if that makes sense.

I always find Sylvester and Aleron from Demon Eyes hard to write about because those two use a lot of insults and comebacks, neither of which I'm good at.

When ever I do a Def Leppard fic. I find it so hard to write all of them, I know plenty about them but they're all like the same for characters, they're just, UGH a royal pain to write.

Especially Steve Clark the guitarist, he drives me mad, he's quiet but takes up a lot of space in the room. Hates being famous, but loves the band.
He's just a huge mix of everything and he makes me want to smash my head against a concrete wall. =/

For me, it's a character in a story that I'm currently playing around with. I totally thought that she'd be too easy to write, and that people would end up hating her, but now that I'm getting to know her better, she's becoming way more complex and so real that I feel as if I've underestimated her strength.

I think that a lot of people would hate her because she tends to represent everyone's weak side...but I think that's why she's so important. And writing a character who floats between love and hate so quickly, but with a human purpose, is quite difficult.
