Mine is muse. Most peop;e don't like them, but I have loved them for years now.
My favorite album from them is Absolution. It's fucking great and I don't think a lot of people like them, but now tell me who is your favorite band, album, song.

Oh and my favorite song ever is Oblivion by mastodon. You weren't expecting that were you? Huh?

Not just because I like their sound, but because of just how DIFFERENT they sound. There are slews of Post-Rock bands out there, but SMZ are so out there and avant garde that they push the boundaries of music itself. They are truly one of a kind, and I love that about them.

They're very much an acquired taste, I'll admit. Most people can't just listen to them on a first listen. You have to be in the right mindset. You need to really "get" the lyrics. When I first heard their song "Microphones In The Trees" I had my ipod on shuffle and I was taking a walk in the forest. It was the most surreal experience I've ever had. The song that really got me into their music was "BlindBlindBlind", though.

They aren't just any band. They don't follow song-writing structures in order to get a popular song. They only play what sounds "good", and, by good, I mean orgasmic.

It's music for the end of the world.
    It's music that is art.

Can someone please fix the title to this thread? It's driving me insane...

but to answer your question, "the greatest band" is a very tricky question to answer.
My favourite band is Green Day but I know they wouldn't be considered the "greatest". They write amazing lyrics and have a simplistic approach to music. They aren't trying to create a 10 minute long guitar solo or drums to play during an apocalyptic film. They write music to accompany the lyrics and vice versa.

They're not trying to be perfect. That's why I like them so much.

The greatest band? Obvious answer would be The Beatles, but I consider Velvet Underground far more influential and great. They were so ahead of their time it hurt.

^I'd second that. The Beatles may have completely revolutionized popular music, but it was The Velvet Underground that changed everything else.

I don't think any one person can say that one band is the greatest because "greatest" is such a vague term and can be based on so many different aspects of a band's music.

Personally, I think the greatest band is Third Eye Blind, but that's just based on my background and my tastes.

And is this not exactly like this thread?

^Not necessarily. Just because you like a band doesn't mean they're the greatest, although that statement is not true for some, it is true for others.

^The last part, referring to a different topic. Just pointing out that your favorite band and who you think is the greatest band don't have to be the same thing.

But people are mostly using this just to say their favorite bands, and the line in the first post says tell your favorite band/album/song, so I'm kinda feeling like this is a duplicate thread.

Oh, yes! They were so influential. Only the first albums, though, while Richey Edwards was still around. His lyrics just shake you.
They were like The Velvet Underground of the 90's Laughing

    I'm agreeing with you here.

The last line in the first post says who is your favorite band, album, song. It didn't actually go back to the greatest band like the title alludes to. Even Billie Joe Armstrong used the word favourite, because it does kind of appear to be more like a who is your favourite band thread.

And there are a few posts that refer to 'greatest' bands being more of a personal thing, rather than why they're great. Not that it's a bad thing - but 'great,' means so much more than a personal level. From that, it would just seem fitting if this was a favourite band and why thread.

And is 'greast' meant to be a mix between 'greatest,' and 'best,' or what?

I think there are two "greatest bands."

Motley Crue. They've been through hell and back. They have a lot of infighting amongst themselves, and they always have, but they make it work and use it to their advantage to make meaningful, amazing music. Their guitarist is slowly dying, Nikki Sixx overdosed on heroin twice and died from it once before being brought back to life, Vince Neil was accused of manslaughter and lost his little girl, and Tommy Lee...well, that's the only thing you need to say. They take their music seriously, and they love their fans. They put on an amazing live show--I've seen them, so I can say it from experieince--and they take care of one another and their fans as well. That's why I think they are truly one of the "greatest bands."

The second "great band" in my opinion is Avenged Sevenfold. You want a dedicated band? It's them. They've gone through a lot. They lost their drummer, who was their brother. They started in high school and worked hard to get where they are now. They treat their fans like family, and they don't have egos the size of the world. They put a lot of hard work and dedication into their music and their live shows, and they do a lot of things for the fans that I've noticed a lot of other bands don't really do.

Going off of that last line, that would make this exactly like the favorite band thread. These are discussion forums, so people could easily say why such and such band is their favorite on the favorite band thread, so there's really no need for this one, imo.

And I just don't think it's ever a good idea to discuss who "the greatest" band is; that's just begging for arguments.
