The second "great band" in my opinion is Avenged Sevenfold. You want a dedicated band? It's them. They've gone through a lot. They lost their drummer, who was their brother. They started in high school and worked hard to get where they are now. They treat their fans like family, and they don't have egos the size of the world. They put a lot of hard work and dedication into their music and their live shows, and they do a lot of things for the fans that I've noticed a lot of other bands don't really do.
    ^Agreed wholeheartedly.

For me, though the greatest band would have to be The Eagles. I'm not really sure how to explain it, the musicality, the talent, the fact they're still going so strong. Saw them live last year. Blew my mind away. I've always liked them, but there's so much to love and admire about them. Don, Glenn, Joe and Timothy, they're all amazing musicians and so dedicated to their art.

Greatest, definitely. Favourite? Not quite. A7X take that spot.

Favourite would have to be A7X.

But Motley Crue, Guns N' Roses, Marilyn Manson and Metallica are bloody great.

Oh, yes! They were so influential. Only the first albums, though, while Richey Edwards was still around. His lyrics just shake you.
They were like The Velvet Underground of the 90's Laughing
His lyrics are on "Journal For Plague Lovers", too. and there are still quite a few songs at least co-written by him on "Everything Must Go".

Motley Crue. They've been through hell and back. They have a lot of infighting amongst themselves, and they always have, but they make it work and use it to their advantage to make meaningful, amazing music. Their guitarist is slowly dying, Nikki Sixx overdosed on heroin twice and died from it once before being brought back to life, Vince Neil was accused of manslaughter and lost his little girl, and Tommy Lee...well, that's the only thing you need to say. They take their music seriously, and they love their fans. They put on an amazing live show--I've seen them, so I can say it from experieince--and they take care of one another and their fans as well. That's why I think they are truly one of the "greatest bands."
Yes! I want to see them someday, but their shows are so expensive =/

Btw, Nikki Sixx overdosed way more than two times ;) (has read too much "Dirt" and "Heroin Diaries" obviously, haha)

*officially sounds like a know-it-all in this thread now*

I actually saw Journal for Plague Lovers at the music store just yesterday. Didn't buy it, though. But this kinda doesn't belong here.
I meant more of the style while his "spirit" was still there, if you know what I mean. They have never written anything better then The Holy Bible, though, at least in my opinion. Someone should have made a thread for them.

I'd consider Muse to be one of the greatest, if you're talking current music. Purely because of factors such as uniqueness, talent, the music (obviously), performance, creativity, innovation and integrity.

I would have to say either The Beatles just because they changed the way people thought about music, it didn't just have to be four guys playing instruments after The Beatles, you could make albums that were really just experiments or Queen or The Eagles, but where would The Eagles be with the harmonies of The Supremes and The Beach Boys. It's so hard to say who the greatest bands are because personally, I think The Eagles are more talented than The Beach Boys but how can you degrade how innovative The Beach Boys harmonies were during thier time? I think you need to think about what makes a band the 'greatest', thier innovation or thier ability to perfect an aspect of music that was around before they started a band.

After putting more thought into it, I'm going to say The Velvet Underground. Definitley. The Beatles did revolutionize music as we know it, and they are a close second, but without The Velvet Underground we wouldn't have half of the genres we do today. They were WAY ahead of their time.

Just to add to this. Tommy Lee went to jail for something stupid and something that he shouldn't have gone to jail for in the first place. They're amazing, it's huge that they're even still alive. Mick Mars dated/married the world's biggest golddigger who took every penny from him when they divorced. On top of what Kayla said he's slowly dying. He still hasn't given up. Nikki's been pronounced legally dead twice from heroin over doses and has overdosed at least half a dozen times.

They've done the craziest stuff out there and they're still in one piece (physically not mentally because mentally they've all got a screw lose somewhere.) But I agree whole heartedly that they are one of the greatest bands, they perform like no other and put everything into there peformances even when they're not a hundred percent sure of what they're doing. They're amazing because they care about they're fans, they don't give a shit about how much money they make because when they were in town last year I got my chance to see them when they gave away tickets to they're show. All you had to pay was service fees because they wanted as many people to come as possible, they don't give a shit how much they make and if they're sell outs. They're in it because they love music and they love what they do and I think that's why they're the greatest band. They've done the craziest shit ever, they've OD'd, gone to jail, shot someone, and killed someone and they're still together. That's fucking dedication.

Personally, Pierce the Veil is my favorite, but probably the greatest band ever [because that's the fucking point of the thread] would be The Beatles, Queen, or again a little personal, The Clash.

To me, Led Zeppelin and Queen are one of the greatest and definitely one of the most influential bands of all time. I don't just say that because I grew up listening to them. I think there are many, many artists and bands out there that wouldn't be around had they not been inspired by them. For Zeppelin, they had such a unique sound and transcended so many genre's, and the originality and creativity those guys have is unbelievable. You can argue that no band really needs a twenty minute drum solo, and I see where people are coming from when they say that, but to me it's not really overzealous. Just the simple fact that anybody can go for that long and make it sound as good as John Bonham did just blows my mind. And Jimmy Page's guitar skills? Cheese And Robert Plant's voice? Don't even get me started. Nowadays there are so many tricks you can use in the studio to make your voice sound perfect, stuff that probably didn't even exist in the 60's and 70's, and yet his voice always sounded so perfect and natural, not only on their albums, but live, too. I nearly got teary-eyed while watching The Song Remains the Same one time because his voice just sounds so gorgeous. He's my favorite singer in the world.

Same exact thing can be said for Queen. There's a very good reason why so many people regard Freddie Mercury as a legend. He was so different, probably considered really odd by some people, but he was so proud and never held anything back. Again, I think one of the most influential singers in music. He was so charismatic, but obviously it wasn't just him that makes Queen amazing. All of them are incredibly unique, something that's definitely lacking in the music business nowadays. Originality is just so important in music, to me at least. I don't think there's that many people who dislike them. (I know there are certainly people that don't, but I can't say I've ever met one. XD)

"Greatest" is such a subjective term and you can argue for hours what makes an artist "the greatest," but I know those two are the greatest to me. That's all just my opinion.

Yeah, I know what you mean... though I'd say Journal For Plague Lovers is definitely up there with the older albums when he was still around. If you haven't at least given it a listen, I would highly recommend it ;)
