Make your characters as real as you can. The plot is important, but the characters are important too.

Write with an outline. Write without an outline. Write long novels, write short stories, write free-verse poetry and songs that can make it to the radio. Write articles and reviews. Just write, and experiment - go outside of your comfort zone. You might discover strengths you never knew you had, and you might find it even more fun than you expected!

Don't give up. If people are mean and rude to you about how you write, don't listen to those people. Listen to the ones that you know are there to help. Even if you aren't a very good writer, you will be in time with lots of practice. Take it from someone who's been writing off and on since the fifth grade. :3
