I'm not very well-equipped to pick one and call it the worst; history isn't my strong subject so I'm not accounting for very far back. But the Holocaust would certainly be the one that comes to mind, as at least 11 million people died as a result of it.

I hope this doesn't turn into a giant "my ancestors suffered more!" competition Coffee

It's been estimated that 49 million (some estimate up to 78 million) died in China and Tibet under Mao's rule.

And though it was from nature instead of human cause, a third of Europe's population was killed by the Bubonic plague in the 14th century.

Edit: By the way you can get in trouble for using chatspeak on the boards. Not trying to bug you, just don't want you in trouble Mr. Green

What Cereal Killer meant was that chatspeak is against the forum rules. You should also watch your capitalisation. Just a heads up. :)

You can also get in trouble for confronting other users about the rules, especially on a public thread where someone can feel embarrassed or defensive. Just report the posts and a staff member will send them a private message.

It's like text language, when people shorten words (for example, "please" becomes "plz"). :) You can get away with the odd "omg" or "lol" (I think), but apart from that, standard spelling is preferred. :)

That's a funny one. But it really is affecting the life cycle.
Slavery with Africans (anywhere it took place) because it affects me and my people the most here in America, and in the rest of the world.

History repeats itself and everything that happens has an impact in the future, whether it's something as huge as the Holocaust, or the murder of one single man, like Bin Laden or Gadhaffi. Right now, we're at war. It's yet another Cold War, in the entire world. We all know about the weapons Russian and China possess, and even the USA. Even in a small country like Portugal, where I live, I'm beginning to fear a World War III. It might not be that far from happening, now that China is rapidly rising as the next world superpower, and with the USA losing their power every day. If any lunatic wants to blow this world up, they could do it. The economic crisis we're going through is worldwide and it raises other crucial problems of a social order: crime rates higher than ever, violence, riots... We have the conditions for yet another domination of dictators, like we saw in Europe in the 30's. So there is not ONE event that was the worst in History, every single one of them got us where we are now.

This. Though I do take some pleasure from all the fruits produced by this unfortunate event.

    Must be my sadistic nature.

If we had to be specific, first thing coming to mind would be slavery, or maybe some major death inducing events like the ones in Russia and China. If we're going for the max brutality then possibly the Nanjing Massacre.

Plenty of awful in history hey.

You're quite right 'weird soup'. However only someone dumb enough would start world war III, I mean that is just suicide. The world would end if that happened and everyone would die including the stupid person who started it.

I don't feel the amount of deaths is a good measure for what's the 'worst,' as that does not put a very high value on lives lost.

I feel like one of the worst things to ever happen in the world is the creation of jails.

I'm surprised you didn't pick the lynching of African-Americans that occurred up until the mid-1900's, but slavery was quite bad as well.

I honestly want to say lynchings though. Less people died from it than the holocaust or the middle passage, but those people weren't killed, they were tortured in the most inhumane ways with spectators numbering in the thousands. I'd rather not go into details as they are incredibly gruesome. Just... the fact that this happened, and it happened for centuries, makes me completely sick, knowing that humans knowingly did it and considered it a form of entertainment. The holocaust had more decency, and barbarism doesn't even come close to describing it...

Also a close runner up for me goes to the Armenian Genocide. Mainly because of how unnoticed it went and how few people are even aware that it happened. It's what directly inspired Hitler's holocaust, and though less people died in it than the holocaust, the holocaust only happened because the Armenian Genocide happened without any repercussions.
