Unpopular/Controversial Opinions #3

  • The book Ready Player One by Ernest Cline is so difficult for me to get through because the constant barrage of nerdy, 80's pop culture references is painful.

  • I was going to post here how I realized the exact reason I can't get into Big Bang Theory. Well, other than the fact that I don't think it's funny. Also, to anyone that's reading this: yes, I understand the jokes. I realized anyway that one of the big reasons I can't get into the show is because I don't like Sheldon Cooper at all. I figured this out 'cause the episodes are getting replayed and the episode where Sheldon gets sick came on. I watched the entire thing and I determined that I could not stand Sheldon. He's this grown man that reminds people just how smart he is, but somehow can't take care of himself whatsoever and makes the dumbest errors, like using a measuring cup as his 'urine cup' and then leaving it in the kitchen.

Still, I then realized something that is a bigger issue for me and that is that every single show I can think of where there are insanely intelligent people are main characters? Those characters are either just awful with interacting with other human beings or are sociopaths. Why? What is our fascination with being like, 'hurrrr, person can do advanced calculus, but god help them if they have to treat another person like a human being'?

I also realized this when an episode of Bones came on and her kid was singing that song where it's them singing about the bones only for her to interrupt and tell her kid that there's no 'chest bone' and that it's multiple bones and there are scientific words for them. Of course there are, but that's a kid. Someone trained in anthropology should have a firm grasp on stages of learning, so this shouldn't be news to her that the kid doesn't know scientific terms. There's also no 'head bone' or 'arm bone' or 'leg bone'. That's not the point of that song for kids and to have her nitpick a child like that just makes her seem awful and not good at her area of expertise. Half the stuff she says in the show when interacting with other people seems like that. Like back when she went to a club and she compared rap music to tribal music as if that didn't make her seem racist at all. She's an anthropologist, not an alien. She should be better at the people thing.

  • Okay. I love the Game Grumps (even though they've goofed up a lot) and I feel like I'm one of the last remaining Grump fans who still likes Arin. But the only time he's ever actually made me mad was his recent-ish Subway rant in one episode. Like, the dude was complaining about the employees making sure they were hearing him correctly and putting a particular amount of vegetables on his sub, as well as the crew helping as many customers/starting as many sandwiches as they can, and...um, that's literally all shit they teach their employees to do. Like, it's literally the right thing they're supposed to do. If they didn't do any of that, they would get reprimanded, and it's essential to make sure they have the order right so they don't get screamed at. Take it from someone who's been on the other side of the sneeze guard, bruh.

  • I didn't think Neon Genesis Evangelion was that good. Shifty I get it was supposed to be like a deconstruction of the mecha genre but I thought it fell flat.

  • I know someone’s going to get mad at me for this, but I really wish so many eating disorder recovery/general resources didn’t automatically assume everyone who needs help is a girl.

  • The Flash is basically Arrow but with a different cast, and Supergirl feels like the two of them but with a female lead. The whole layout of all three shows are the exact same and it's baffling how people who watch all three or even two out of the three don't feel as if they're watching the exact same show.

I wanted to watch Supergirl - I was so excited to put it on record and check it out, but all I could think about was Arrow the entire time. The same with the Flash. I got three episodes into that and could point out which characters were supposed to resemble who from Arrow, and it's disappointing that all these superhero show have the same structure. Where's originality?

  • I think that the portrayal of gardening as an old-people hobby is, frankly, ridiculous and inaccurate.

  • I don't like any of the Kardashian-Jenner crew as people but, fillers/surgery or not, I still think Kylie looks amazing.

  • This is more geographic for me, but I really don't mind staying in all the time, and not getting drunk, and not going out clubbing. Sometimes I'd actually rather not.

Along the same lines (since I'm not of legal age), I don't understand the hype. I've got no plans to be a "party animal". It all seems so very dull to me. Not to mention, it's expensive af for a night out. Facepalm

to add to this, drinking is not very fun. I'm 21 years old and I think I wore myself out by drinking when I was 19-20 where it's just not fun to me anymore. Like I'll get mikes hard lemonade or twisted tea for a night at home but other than that, I don't do it. And you know how much effort it requires to go out to a club? lmfao I'll stick to staying at home and in bed.

  • I'm actually really angry that My Chemical Romance is doing anything this year and am still really mad at them for breaking up the way they did, especially with that letter Gerard wrote about it. I have zero good or kind thins to say about that break up letter.

  • I think the Kardashians are overrated. They didn't do anything to get the fame that they have when there are actual talented people out there busting their asses and not getting anything out of it. I feel the same way about the kids that become famous from mouthing the words to popular songs on musical.ly. It's ridiculous.

  • I never understood the appeal of reading The Lord of the Rings and thought it was a very dry read, which eventually pushed me to give up on my mission to finish it. I prefer the movies over the books.

I honestly actually kind of agree with this. Although I did enjoy The Hobbit (which apparently is very backward to what most people enjoyed), but I also couldn't stick with the LOTR books (going to attempt again at some point though) since they were so long. And not just long, but long without really getting anywhere. I mean, there's only so many pages you can read of Frodo smoking weed and waiting to turn 50 so he can be the same age as Bilbo was at the beginning of The Hobbit before you just want to kick him out of the house yourself.
