I've got a general question, I hope it's the right place to ask. If you have a significant amount of alcohol in the first 3/4 weeks (maximum) of pregnancy, before you knew you were pregnant, would you have caused the foetus any harm? How dangerous is it at that stage? And if there is damage, is it the type of damage that would cause an immediate miscarriage or would it lead to complications later on?

Depending on how much you drank, there is a good chance the baby may have gotten the drink too, so it is possibly dangerous. I don't know about miscarriage, but there is a small chance there will be birth defects later on. But that's just a general answer. Also, there is also a good chance it didn't affect it since the baby lives off its own yolk sack for the first 5 weeks I think.

At the embryonic stage of development, miscarriage is really common if the fetus is exposed to toxins (woman probably wouldn't know she was ever pregnant) but it's harder to expose an embryo to toxins because there is no umbilical cord. Most women don't realize their pregnant until 8-9 weeks, and a lot of women unknowingly drink during that time period, and have no issues.

Okay, thank you. And there'd be no way of telling if you'd caused any damage?

Probably not until the first ultrasound, if it's a visual defect.

You can ask for a screening test in first trimester.

Chorionic villus sampling (CVS) done 10 to 13 weeks.

Amniocentesis done 15 to 20 weeks

I had a CVS test done because of family history of a birth defect. CVS and Amnio are ways to tell if there is a birth defect. I'd recommend talking to your doctor about how to check if it's a major concern.

@Agathokakological.. -- I never used bounty really, only signed up because my midwife told me too, but there's lots off forums on their for help or chats and the freebie packs you get aren't half bad (: how're you doing anyway?

How is everyone doing? hope bumps aren't giving you too much hassle :)

@sunflowers. I'm no expert but I'd say it's a 50/50 chance that it may/may not off affected the baby, you see people who drink and smoke and do all sorts through their pregnancy and the baby is born with perfect health and no complications at all, and there's others who never touched a drink, smoked and ate really healthily through theirs who's babies were born with problems. As long as you look after yourself and stay away from drink and other such things once you find out then hopefully everything will be ok.

If there was any major problems with the baby they'd be able to pick it up on and ultrasound or tests, but I'd try to avoid the amnio test unless you really had too have it as that can lead to miscarriage.

My Midwife insisted in signing up to 'Emma's Diary.' I love the weekly updates of the babies development more than anything, and the forums aren't bad if you need someone who can empathize with you.

I'm doing amazingly well thanks! Can't believe I'm 6 months tomorrow. How're you doing? ^^

I'm stressing out, my boyfriend and I got approved for our own apartment and I only have 2 weeks to pack since the apartment will be ready at the end of the month! I hate moving, but it's a really spacious one bedroom so my bubby will have a proper nursery :) but beside that, I'm good lol just hope I can get everything ready before she comes! I'm hoping she chills unto her due date haha.

The Rumor, oh thank you, I think it's kind of freaky lol especially the belly button, it pokes through all my shirts :P

I've heard of that one but not had a nosey on it yet, may have to later haha. I loved them updates too, they're pretty good.
And that's good to hear :) everyone says these last few months drag but they flew by for me, hope little one doesn't give you too much trouble (:
I'm doing great thanks, getting a bit off hassle over babies weight gain at the moment though, but he's happy and thriving :') moved him into his cot the other week, he loves it, more room for him to wriggle around when he's supposed to be sleeping!

    @GiaTortilla
That's great that you guys have got your own place, nothing better than having your own space when a little one comes along :) but just take a seat and chill, you don't need to be stressing out, pregnancy is stressful as it is and you don't need the added pressure, just make sure you have the necessities, like a bed, something to sleep on.. etc, etc. Is all your stuff between your parents house? If so just ask if you can leave it there for another week or so and to help out.
I'm sure you will, but even if you don't she wont mind :) just take your time with things :)

Hey girls, checking in again. I'm 36 weeks and 2 days finally! Full term next week, holy cow. Baby's in a perfect position so if she decides to arrive early, hopefully it'll be gravy! We're all moved in and I've been just washing the rest of her little clothes and organizing them. And BF has now become DF :) lots of things going on, but doing good still. Hopefully I can make it to 38 weeks at least, but for now she's not showing any signs of coming any time soon.

    How is everyone doing??

    36 week belly, I am HUGE...ER.

June 29th for me. I'm 16 weeks, and found out today that I'm having a baby girl. In Love I'm so happy and excited.

Haven't gained a single pound yet, though it seems all the belly fat I had before is shaping itself differently, and really low it's getting harder. But according to the ultrasound tech today, baby is growing well.

I'm no doctor, but to respond to the posts above me about alcohol in the first few weeks of pregnancy: before I found out I was pregnant I smoked cigarettes, drugs, drank lots of alcohol. I told my doctor and he said since it was so early (I found out I was pregnant around 4 weeks and stopped everything immediately) it shouldn't cause any harm to fetus. I was told the placenta hasn't formed yet at that point so while yes the fetus is exposed to that stuff, it still isn't connected to your blood supply and I forget what else he said and I'm probably explaining it horribly, but he said it shouldn't cause damage. I'm now 8 months pregnant with a healthy baby and I did all that stuff before I found out.

I'm due Feb 24th. 34 weeks 2 days at the moment. Having a little girl. :) I feel like my belly is huge. Bending over to put socks on is getting uncomfortable! Hahah. Though at my last doctor appointment my belly was measuring slightly small, but was told it's still in the normal range so they aren't worried.

I can't wait for her to arrive so I can see her. I like being pregnant, but I hate that I can't see her and can't check on her to make sure she's okay unless I go to the doctor for tests and whatnot. I was sent to labor & delivery at 32 weeks with contractions every two minutes and bleeding, so ever since that I've been so nervous something might go wrong. I just want to make sure she's ok and I can't wait until she's out so I can stop worrying haha :)
