I'm not German but people at my old school used to call me Lil' Nazi just because I spoke the language. They were literally trying to bond with me by glorifying Hitler because apparently even being associated with Germany in the slightest makes you Nazi.

I hate the way Australians are always portrayed as cork hat wearing, kangaroo riding, boomerang throwing outback dwellers whose wardrobe only consists of green shirts and shorts.

YES THANK YOU! THIS IS WHAT I WANT TO SEE TOO! NOT SOME WHITE WOMAN WHO 'FITS' THE ROLE BECAUSE SHE'S A GREAT ACTRESS! Shifty sorry for the caps!

I want Latina women to stop being portrayed as sluts or anything like that, I'm tired of seeing only medium-toned Latinas in movies. We all don't have hour glass figures, we--as well as everyone one else on this damn planet--come in variety.

I'm so tired of this. I don't hate Jews and I'm not a killer.

I'm not African (just African American), but it's really perplexing when movies based on ancient Egypt are filled with white actors. I know Egypt was conquered by the Greeks and others, but there are literally no black people in these movies.

From what I've read, Egyptians aren't black. They're more middle eastern than anything, but I could be wrong about that. Also, most movies I see in modern times do just that and cast non-whites in the roles. Older movies were whitewashed to all hell, but maybe I'm just not watching the modern ones that are that way.

With Egypt located in Africa, I think it's safe to say they aren't Middle Eastern. Either way they're definitely not white. And it's not so much whitewashing as in coloured characters being made white, as much as it is a hugely white cast with very few coloured people. This applies to both movie remakes of books and original movies.

Just because they're located in Africa doesn't mean they can't be middle eastern. Pakistan is located in Asia, technically, but isn't considered 'asian'. I meant middle eastern in terms of using that as an ethnicity more than a region though. And Egyptian language is heavily influenced by Arabic. I'm just now curious if the complaint is now that there aren't enough actual Egyptian characters in the movie and too many white characters, or what? Also, which modern movies are you referring to with this?

That makes more sense. I'm talking about, for instance, Frozen, Big Hero 6, GOTG; movies aimed at kids. Frozen features two slim white attractive females (female characters, though, cool!), Big Hero 6 a very whitewashed crew of characters that were meant to be Asian, except for one girl (it's an Asian comic), and though GOTG has mostly inhuman characters the lead is still an attractive white male. That's just three, but if I went and dug through my movie history I'd find more.

I'm not trying to whine, I'd just like to see main characters who aren't pretty and white and quirky. It's... kind of getting old.

From your post, I'm feeling that your issue is not with the portrayal of races (although from what little research I've done on Big Hero 6, it's the only one where it potentially was whitewashed, although I will point out that simply being an Asian comic doesn't mean that the characters are going to be Asian), but instead on the fact that there isn't enough inclusion. That's an entirely different issue. Also, Guardians of the Galaxy is also based on comics, and Peter Quill is supposed to look like that. Also, 'pretty and quirky' are not the words I'd use to describe Peter Quill.

That's part of it, yes. I'm really bothered by BH6 since the original comic was Asian with Asian characters, but it's also general inclusion. (And God no I didn't mean him in the least, that was more about Frozen!)

    Fair enough.

I will admit to having a particular annoyance with comments about Frozen. Partially because I work for the Disney Store and so if I got paid for every time someone complained to me about something Frozen related, then I'd be rich enough to run away to my own private island by now, so I'm also just willing to let things with Big Hero 6 slide because I'm just desperate for someone to talk about a movie by those people that isn't Frozen. Seriously though, I used to love the movie and now thinking the movie title makes me cringe.

I disliked it from the start, but I'm not gonna go on a rampage. I'll leave it at "Mary Sue protagonists" and "lack of diversity" for now. As for BH6... I'm going to see it, but I still wish there were fewer white characters.

Now I'm curious to move this conversation to somewhere else just so you could demonstrate how in the world the protagonists are Mary Sue at all.

Maybe I'm wrong, but... though I liked Anna, Elsa seemed to me like a "rebellious royal", which I've personally seen a lot of. Maybe it's because I've consumed different media than you but her character didn't seem very unique. I've seen loads of things similar. I'm mostly crediting this to Frozen being based off of a very old story, from a time where such a thing may not have been common. (Sorry if I'm getting hard to understand, I'm a little tired)

I just looked at the cast for the new movie "Exodus" and half of the main cast are white, but there are quite a few Middle Eastern actors. I looked it up, and a lot of people say that Egyptians are geographically African and culturally/racially Middle Eastern, so I guess that makes sense. Also, Israelites were enslaved in Egypt. But, why is Christian Bale playing Moses?

Ugh, I just hate Christian Bale in general. Although I will correct myself now since my earlier statements weren't entirely accurate. Modern movies are getting much better about Ancient Egypt unless the bible is involved, and then suddenly it's white people time. 'Cause apparently it's harder for some people to still believe if their religion's savior has too much melanin.

Yeah, modern movies are getting better, and that is so true. There was an animated movie called The Prince of Egypt and all the characters had brown skin. Exodus is basically the live action version and Moses is white. The Bible was set in Africa/Middle East, so I don't know why they don't use Middle Eastern actors as the main characters. I would ask why you hate Christian Bale, but this isn't the right place for that. Laughing
