Living in the Past

Veronica gave a nod as he exited the car but knew that she was going to be alright. It was just some paperwork to keep the higher-ups updated with the case but she would let her mind wander further about the evidence. As he walked away, she sighed a little before leaving the car herself to go back to the police station. She had to admit that, despite the rocky start, he actual wasn't too bad of a partner. She walked into the station before receiving some dirty looks by other humans and took her place at her temporary office. Spreading out the information on her desk, she pondered what could have possible happened. They had: a dead vampire, a dead human, clubs nearby, no witnesses other than whoever found the body, and some camera footage.

Closing the door behind him, Nick sighed feeling like he was only digging a deeper hole for himself to lie in. Luckily, he was out of his parent's house but now he had to deal with a pregnant-Emma, moreover, it was his child. He scratched his head as he sat down on the bed not knowing what to do. He wasn't sure he could keep up this charade for the rest of his life but he would have to wait eighteen more years to not pay child support. Nick groaned in frustration before leaning back to stare at the ceiling. He would just have to take it a step at a time and not overwhelm himself.

Sam was slightly happy to be going home for a little. He was very exhausted, and he knew that being exhausted would not help his investigation skills. And he completely trusted Veronica... He felt like this was going to be really good... She was a good partner - and he was starting to actually warm up to being around her. This would actually be okay. He laid back on bed and went to sleep, needing it badly.

Emma sighed a little as she sat back in her room and thought about this. Here she was, pregnant, and her abusive ex-boyfriend who was the father of her child, was in her house again... She didn't know what she was thinking... But they had to get along if he was going to be here. She couldn't take this otherwise. She sighed and got out of bed, getting up and knocking on his door. What was she thinking? Well... They needed to talk at least.

Veronica sighed knowing that pretty much equated to nothing. She popped the footage into her computer thinking that it was really the only solid evidence that they had at the moment. Leaning back in her chair, she waited as an image popped up and she saw the female victim leaving the club with the male vampire. Veronica didn't know what that could mean other than she had left willingly. A few moments later, another figure left the club but... she didn't recognize this person. There was a hat covering the person's face and that was when the footage cut off.

He stayed in that position for a moment before turning onto his side to get some rest. It had been a while since the last time that he had properly slept on a bed. Nick slowly lulled himself to sleep before being thrown into a series of horrible nightmares. His parents continuously beating him and violently yelling about what a horrible child he was, that he would never result to anything.

Sam slept for a good few hours. He trusted Veronica to be able to do this well and he knew that she would tell him if anything happened. That was why, when he had woken, he dragged his feet a little getting out of bed. He checked his phone and then closed his eyes for a little longer, not really wanting to move at all.

Emma sighed when he didn't answer and went back to her own room. The last thing she wanted was to walk in and have him hit her or yell at her for something. That wouldn't be good... He would be back to his own self... She sighed a little and went back to her own room. She was still trying to convince herself that the best thing was having him here instead of out of the baby's life...

Veronica rewinded the video and paused it as the person left the club once more. She zoomed into the face as much as she could. It seemed like only thing that was visible was the person's jawline, like that would do much. She sighed as she decided to run the partial face through the system. It might actually help them to have a list of suspects, especially those that lived nearby. She decided that now would be a good time to call up Sam since there was something that got something.

Once he woke up, he was covered in sweat and sat up as he breathed heavily. Nick wasn't exactly sure why he had that dream before shaking his head. He needed to take a shower since he felt uncomfortable from the dream. Standing up, he took a moment to pull himself together for Emma and headed out into the hallway.

Sam groaned a little when he finally got a call, but he knew he had been dragging his feet for too long. Too much dilly-dallying wasn't good for him anyway - not when they had a case to be working on. He answered it and smiled. "Hello Veronica. Did your night treat you well?" He asked her, meaning it sincerely though it came out slightly sarcastic.

Emma sighed when she finally heard movement and she rushed out into the hall, seeing him. He didn't look so good - and she almost wondered what was going on, but she didn't question him about that. "Nick... I... I think we need to talk.." She said in a not-so-confident voice. It wasn't easy to sound confident right now.

"Yeah, definitely. Watching camera footage is my ideal night." She said as she picked up the slight sarcasm that was in his voice and sighed as she leaned back into her chair. Now wasn't the time to get fresh with him. Veronica looked at the file that laid on her desk before telling him of the new information that she had found. "I am running the partial face through the system but I don't think that it will help that much."

Nick's anger tempted to flare as he really didn't want to talk to her. She was probably going to complain about something that she needed or wanted from him. "....What is it, Emma?" He questioned trying not to let the annoyance seep out into his voice.

Sam smirked a little as the sarcasm was returned and he chuckled, nodding his head. "Gotcha... Sorry for making your night so long." He apologized to her and took a seat beside her, letting her explain everything. "Wow - that's pretty good for a long night at the office - you sure you don't want sleep or anything?" He asked.

Emma sighed a little as she looked at him. She could tell he was annoyed by her and it just hurt. Why was he like that with her? "I just..." She started in a quiet voice. "I wanted to talk... I... I sort of, miss you..."

Veronica glanced up at him as he took the seat beside her,"It's not exactly your fault. This case is just hard to crack." She gave sigh as she rested her head in the palm of her hands trying to think of something else that they could do. "No, I am fine. I can go a few days without getting any rest." She reassured him as she spread out the evidence on the desk to show what they had. Nothing added up to her.

"You? You miss me?" He said in compete surprise thinking that it was completely a lie. Why would she miss the one person that had made her life a living hell and had gotten her pregnant? Nick wasn't exactly sure what was going on in that brain of hers because he definitely did not miss her.

Sam smiled at her. She was quite cute as she rested her head down on her hand and he sighed, just watching her for a moment. "Are you positively certain? I don't want you to be too tired - I can handle things here for a few moments if you want some time on your own." He promised her, sighing lightly.

Emma blushed a little and crossed her arms around herself, nodding. "Well yeah... Of course I do... You're... My first love." She blushed lightly. "Until you started not trusting me... We were good together - you and I... We were quite perfect." She smiled.

"No, I should be fine. I don't want to waste any time when I know that I can help out with the case." She insisted thinking that she would be fine without getting some rest. Even if she wanted to, Verinica knew she wouldn't be able to sleep with her mind pondering the crime scene at every waking moment.

Nick frowned at her since she made it seem like their relationship heading south had been of his own accord. She had made him act like that. Pushing him into a corner and always thinking about herself. "Why do you think that I stopped trusting you?"

Sam sighed and nodded his head. "I'm sorry that you feel that I wasted time - that wasn't my intention." He said softly, shaking his head and looking away for a moment. Sometimes he felt like they were complete opposites. It was bad.

Emma sighed and crossed her arms, shaking her head. "I don't know - why did you? I loved you.. You knew that. I trusted you - and I didn't do anything to make you scared of trusting me, so why did you do that?"

Veronica looked over at him since he misinterpreted her words. "Sam, you needed rest to function properly. My body can handle not having it. You didn't waste time, alright?" She reiterated not wanting him to think that she was pushing the blame onto him considering that they didn't have a lead.

She didn't know. That only made Nick more angry about the whole entire situation. She had no clue. "What do you mean you have no idea? You were always so concerned about yourself and how you felt. You never cared about me or what was going on in my life. It was always about how unhappy you were."

Sam looked over at her curiously and then nodded his head. "Okay... I just thought you were implying... You know - never mind. We should really just get back to work. Any leads on that partial face yet?" He asked, hopeful. They needed something.

Emma blushed a little. She could see him getting mad and that always scared her. "I... I didn't mean to be like that..." She said in an innocent tone and blushed. "I didn't know you felt that way - like I didn't care. I did... A lot - more than you seem to realize. I'm sorry for being like that." She whispered.

"I wasn't implying anything. I can assure you. I clearly state things that I want to say; I don't go around the bush with people." Veronica said as moved over towards the computer to see that it was still scanning for the matching people. It was only about 75% done. That was what she got for only having a partial print. "No... Nothing yet. This thing has been running for about an hour and nothing has been determined." She sighed as she silently cursed technology for being so slow.

"I don't want to talk about this, Emma." He frowned at her as he crossed his arms over his chest, getting physical was the last thing he needed. "Yeah, well, that it the way it came off. I was never able to express the way that I felt." Nick turned to go towards the kitchen to cool himself off and get a glass of water.

Sam chuckled a little when she got pissed off at the machine and shook his head. "It's just fine. Give yourself a few moments to breathe - there's no reason for us to be agitated by it - we'll get this guy eventually - you know that!" He said, trying to calm her. He didn't mind just hanging out with her for a little while.

Emma frowned as he crossed his arms and she placed her hands on her stomach, looking down. "So... Did you love me?" She asked gently, following him as he headed towards the kitchen. "I know you don't want to talk about this, but if we're going to raise this baby together, we have to, in order to show our baby love." She reasoned.

"The last thing that I need is to find another two bodies that we weren't able to save because of a machine." She frowned over at him and then at the computer that mockingly increased by a mere 1%. Veronica gave a groan before taking in a deep breath, trying to decide what she could possibly do next. "I-I'm okay.. I just can't sit here and not do something." She admitted with a shake of the head.

Nick groaned since it seemed like it would never end with her. He didn't want to talk about it but it didn't seem like she wanted to honor that opinion. "My god, Emma. There you go again! You just completely ignored the fact that I didn't want talk about this!" He yelled before taking another moment to compose himself once more. Yelling would get him kicked out of the house. "Look.. Maybe I did but that was in the past. Right now, just work on keeping that baby healthy."

Sam comfortingly wrapped an arm around her and smiled lightly, nodding his head. It wasn't weird to touch his partner like that, was it? He didn't know. "I know, but it will be okay - we'll find out who this is and we'll make sure we stop him, okay?" He asked.

Emma blushed a little, her lower lip trembling in fear as he started to yell. That never ended up well before. She sighed a little. "I'm sorry... I'm sorry for ignoring that fact - but what are we going to do?! I would like to at least get along... For our baby." She said softly and sighed. She touched her stomach and sighed. "I want to get through this - together."

"Thanks." She gave an appreciative smile to him knowing that they would get through this and capture the person that did it. Veronica wasn't exactly sure how to feel about the arm that was wrapped around her. It was definitely warm but that was because his heart was actually beating. "Yeah, we definitely will." Breaking the moment, she heard the sound of the computer go off and her eyes shot to the page to see that there had been hits on the partial facial print. There was nine people around the area with a similar jaw;ine.

Nick frowned since they were getting along perfectly well until she started talking about the past,"We were doing completely fine before and then you had to screw it up." He leaned against the kitchen counter with his arms crossed over his chest since there was nothing wrong between them. She always had to stir up trouble. "We will, Emma. That baby is going to be born and happy but don't try to relive the past. It's gone."

Sam kept his arm around her lightly and smiled, rubbing her back to comfort her, it was slightly odd - unnatural maybe. But he didn't care - he wasn't going to make it a big deal right now. "Look at that - we're even getting good results now!" He said, reaching over to get the paper and he studied it, smiling down at her. "We'll have to interrogate these people - see where they were the night of the murders and see what to do from there. Things are looking up, Veronica."

Emma frowned lightly and looked down, her hand on her stomach lightly. "I just don't know what changed with us..." She said in a whisper and then frowned. "Maybe it was wrong... I don't want to spend all of this time with you around to have to be miserable because you know you hate me and there's nothing I can do about it. I don't know what I ever did wrong to you - only that I loved you..."
