This is the place to talk about all the things that you dislike reading in stories. Please keep all discussions respectful, do not post any links to examples of stories/authors you dislike, and avoid bashing.

    Hello, new thread. Wow
I don't like song lyrics as titles. They're usually too long.
Also, female characters. Call me sexist (don't, I'm female too) but I can't stand females as main characters. I don't know why, I just don't like them unless they're very, very well written.

    Ooooh, new thread is exciting.

I am beyond guilty of this but predominantly white characters in stories. I tend to do this because it's much easier not having to create a background / culture for someone than for someone who is white. Not saying that white people don't have culture, per say, but they tend to have less of a culture than say, a coloured person. (Hopefully this isn't taken offensively or anything but I hope someone can see where I'm coming from). Also I think when someone incorporates their roots / culture into a story it makes them more interesting - and it doesn't necessarily have to be part of the plot, but just mentioning it every once in a while is nice too.

Long story short, diversity in characters would be nice.

Also, I dislike the role of the 'token gay guy' in stories - like there is only one form of gay men and that's the overly enthusiastic shopping extraordinaire etc etc.

Characters that undergo little to no character development/growth in stories.
Stories where no one ever has to do mundane things such as pee, eat, brush their teeth. Little things like that sometimes would be nice.

    Things I dislike in stories:

    Rape

    Mpreg

a character who is supposedly a 'unique special snowflake' who ALWAYS turns out to be a walking cliche

slash where one of the characters is a whiny little bitch who dissolves into tears in every other chapter (this sometimes applies to het as well, but not quite as often)

going into excessive details about what the character looks like and is wearing (especially if it's fanfiction, we already know what the character looks like, there's no need to type up a whole paragraph about what outfit she's wearing)

    incest

When the OC is always a Goth, punk or emo girl. Now don't get me wrong, I'm somewhat Gothic myself, but just ONCE I'd like to see a main female OC that isn't. Give me a preppy cheerleader, a middle aged business woman, a street hardened gangster girl, etc. Let's just have some variety!

I constantly see people complaining about Americans writing British characters and screwing up the manners of speaking, terms, etc, which I agree is annoying, but it's even more frustrating to me when it's the other way around, probably because there are so many American tv shows and whatnot that are globally syndicated.

No normal, average-joe American uses terms like "mum," "mate," "flat," or "arse."

I've only read the first book, but Fifty Shades of Grey is the most infamous example I can think of because the MFC is constantly using Brit terms when she's supposed to be American. There was a few times where she mentioned how "smart" her outfit looked or whatever, and at first I thought, "oh, she means this outfit makes her look intelligent. Okay," and then I came across it a few more instances and was just like, "THIS MAKES NO FUCKING SENSE Twitch" before I eventually realized it was a Brit thing XD

Bad Grammer. It is a pet peeve of mine. Bad spelling doesn't really bother me, I mean, I am a VERY bad speller. I Usually use spell check, but my tablet doesn't have that. So it is really hard for me.

So just bad Grammer bothers me

THANKS for making this thread. Hopefully people will start using this for the topic instead of in blogs all the time.

The constant labels in stories and the scene queens used to portray a 20-some-year-old woman. Um no...they'd be made fun of in real life, sorry to say, but it's true. Do you see me prancing around with raccoon eyes and multi-colored hair? That was me in high school and I cringe at those memories.

It's shit. Playing with it, eating it, smearing it on each other... anything you can think of. I don't like that in a story, anything else goes for me. :)

Scat is poop play. I forgot to list it, but that's another thing I hate in stories. It's fine if you get off to someone else taking a dump on you, but please keep that shit (pun not intended) out of stories.

I can't stand crossovers that title the story after one of the fandoms, the tv show/book/movie it's inspired by, etc. It just seems beyond lazy to me.
