Maia grew up wondering if the TiMER was worth it. It chose your match for you and you had no say in it. Her and her fraternal twin brother, Luke got the opportunity to get one at 14 and Luke did but she didn't. Not many people go through life without a TiMER but Maia wanted to pick her own perfect match.

Ashton got his TiMER as soon as he turned thirteen and ever since then, it has been blank. It meant that his perfect match didn't have one. A lot of his friends were with their matches or were close to the end of their countdown. Ashton was pitiful at love on his own and wanted the extra push from the device but he still awaits it to start counting down.
When Maia meets Ashton, she immediately notices the blank TiMER. They instantly become close and Maia knows that if his TiMER started to countdown, then he would probably leave her. After the endless flings and months later, Maia's mind is still on Ashton's blank TiMER. So, minutes before Ashton gets his removed, Maia gets one, triggering Ashton's to count down.
Aria Harrison had been given her TiMER for her seventeenth birthday. She was never able to find love herself, which made her anxious to find her perfect match when it was gifted to her. She always felt like she wasn't worth anyone's attention, but she was looking for a relationship where someone could stand her imperfections and love her.
Luke Hemmings was unsure everytime he had looked at his TiMER, unsure if it really worked, if it would lead him to his perfect match. He never put it on, refusing to believe a device could simply find your destined soulmate and pair you together once you make eye contact. After so much curiousity, one day (the day of Aria's birthday to be exact) he decides to put it on - and it begins to countdown.
When Aria and Luke one day make eye contact after passing each other on the streets, and both of their TiMERS go off, they realize who they were. Immediately, they clicked and had formed a relationship. But happiness doesn't last forever - as this relationship is rough with many bumps in the road. Aria isn't sure if the TiMER was correct in pairing her with Luke, and Luke begins to think the device was faulty

Sidney is quite a shy girl to begin with. She is a good girl in every definition, just a little insecure, that’s all. She’s neighbours with one of the guys (or maybe childhood friends, if it doesn’t interfere with the guy’s plot), and maybe even cousins with one of the girls, tho I don't think it's necessary. She knew about the technology before, the device, but she didn’t really believe in it. She has always been skeptical about it, even when her childhood friend decided to buy her one too. Sid, she prefers to be called, eventually wore it out of mere appreciation (since it was costly), but didn’t expect to meet her match so soon.
When she met Calum, he was the one that first approached her. Calum had the exact opposite attitude towards the device; he treasured it ever since he first got it in his preteen years. Their overall plot line would be about how Calum was trying to get her to truly fall for him. It wasn’t that Sidney had her eyes on someone else, it’s just that Sidney didn’t fully trust the credibility of the device. But Sidney, being her kind self, never had the heart to push him out of her life, which eventually led her into falling in love anyway.

Background info : Lizzie was born as the first child of a big family. She has five younger siblings. She's always been responsible since she was little because her parents put it on her shoulders to take care of her siblings. She's very meticulous and she lives her life with a system. Some even call her a perfectionist. Falling in love with her own best friend has left her broken hearted when the man goes and falls in love with another girl. Giving up in love, she becomes sceptical when her mother gives her the timer for her 17th birthday gift. When she finds her 'perfect match' in the form of Michael Clifford, her initial doubts about the device only increases. She's a firm believer in star signs and compatibility. There's just no way a Taurus can be a perfect match for a Scorpio now, is it?

Background info : Michael is known to be a freak. He changes his hair colour every two weeks. There's never a sure way of knowing what he'll do next. With his sharp tongue and weird sense of humour, people sometimes have troubles deciding whether they like him, or hate him. He lives his life the way he wants without following orders and he can be a bit reckless at times. He takes part in an online contest and wins himself the timer. At first, he uses the device just for fun. He doesn't trust that a machine can decide someone's destiny. Love is not something that can be calculated. When his timer stops the first time he meets Lizzie, he takes it as a challenge to see whether she is his true 'perfect match' or if it's just a faulty little machine.
