I didn't see a topic, and I've mentioned it in a few topics in the forum, so I've decided to start one.

    From Wikipedia:
    Wikipedia:
Apatheism, also known as pragmatic atheism or (critically) as practical atheism, is acting with apathy, disregard, or lack of interest towards belief or disbelief in a deity.
For the longest time, I considered myself Atheist only because I didn't know the word for truly not caring, but now that I have this term, that's what I consider myself. Now, I still have some beliefs like reincarnation and some form of afterlife, but when it comes to a deity, I just don't care.

What are your thoughts on Apatheism?

It seems like those would be nicer than the super passionate Atheists who are really really mean to believers.

    @ dru is beautiful.
I actually know someone who's an atheist like you mentioned. He dated this one girl whose parents are extremely religious, and while the her parents were being just as rude, he was still insulting him.

I think being indifferent to something so topical and important in the world is socially irresponsible.

Personally, I identify as apatheist. I've been saying for years that I'm agnostic but to be honest, I don't think I care enough to be called that. I do have an opinion on institutionalized religions, what they preach and how this impacts society, I'm not an alienated person, but as for myself, I don't really care if there's a God, a legion of them, or none.

In fact, this is the approach of science to the question of God's existence, not atheism as a lot of people seem to assume.

    @ Kurtni
I don't see how this is socially irresponsible.

I dunno - Bill Maher is a self-confessed apatheist, or at least he has at one time or another said so, and he gets bad press for "attacking" theistic religion.

yeah, not caring about the specific belief doesn't affect your attitude towards the religious or religion.

I don't think Bill Maher is apathetic about religion/belief at all. XD But there are mean people everywhere.

Just found the interview I remember him saying it in. It's not religion that an 'apatheist' is necessarily apathetic about - and by extension its downfalls, which are obviously what Bill Maher and others tend to criticise - but the existence of a god/afterlife in itself. In other words, "I dunno if God exists/where we go after we die, and I also don't give a shit."
Personally I'm quite the opposite of apathetic when it comes to the existence of a god (in a theistic sense rather than a deistic sense*). If I'm right in thinking there probably isn't a god, I'm glad of it, and I don't relish the idea of there being an omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, omni-everything being dictating every aspect of my life on pain of eternal suffering, regardless of how much of his 'morality' I agree with.

    * In a deistic sense, there's no reason to have moral qualms with the existence of a god, when all that a deistic god is is the creator of the universe and nothing more.

Honestly, I kind of wish that I was an apatheist, but I'm not sure if I ever will get to that point. Apathy has never really been my strong suit. I tend to live in the land of extremes more often than not. Before I was an agnostic atheist, I was part of a very religious family. I'm still part of that family, but no longer share the religion. I think I've just seen way too much negativity come from the religious side of the argument to ever be an apatheist. I mean, usually the stuff I'd joke about (usually not directly to religious people) are things like, "I stopped talking to an imaginary friend years ago," or obnoxiously pointing out bible verses to people when they throw bible verses at me.

I say this, because I've noticed in several threads (including this one), people mention atheists being truly terrible to religious people. I mean, sometimes there are douchebag atheists that mock Christians for no reason, but I also think that in comparison, calling someone stupid is less harsh than telling someone they're going to or deserve to burn alive for all of eternity.

I have always felt this way but I didn't know there was a word for it. It may seem careless or wrong or like one person said, irresponsible. But in my opinion, there are things that are just as, if not more, important than whether there is a creator or not that it seems like a lot of people forget about.

The reason I feel this way is that there is literally no way that any of us are ever going to 100% know why we're here, but there's no reason to think that it's because of a God. But because there is no real way of knowing, I'm not going to spend my time contemplating it. It seems pointless to me.

I don't really know how to explain it because I'm usually very passionate about everything, but when it comes to this... it just seems so insignificant. I know there's no god, but I don't really care. I would still be the same person whether there was a god or not.
