Oops it was stuck at 700 words when Christmas break ended and I ended up forgetting about it, sorry! Lina messaged me on Twitter a bit earlier today and I managed to get it done tonight. Feel free to pester me about the chapters when I'm slow; it definitely gets me going! Well here it is! Let me know if there is anything wrong or any character inconsistencies. I'm not quite sure if I've got everyone's characters down.

    ------------------------

Reed leaned flat over his desk and reached his arms out to grab the back of the seat in front of him. It made a loud squeak as he pulled back on it. “Reed, would you like to answer this question?” the teacher asked, “since you seem like you’re free enough to do…” He raised his eyebrows “… whatever you’re doing.”

“Stretches,” Reed replied. “The answer to your question is that I’m doing stretches. It’s good for the brain. And then this…” He breathed into his hands and rubbed them together. “This is good for warming your hands and getting your circulation up and going.”

Again, the teacher raised his eyebrows. “Okay,” he said. “But can you answer this problem on the board?”

Reed squinted at the calculus problem written on the front. He sighed and raised his eyebrows at the teacher who liked raising his eyebrows. Both of their eyebrows were raised. Reed liked to imagine that it was a eyebrow raising contest and a staring contest in one. This was intense. “But I already answered a question,” he said. “Why two?”

    “Answer it, Reed.”

“Oh okay it’s uh, it’s,” he scratched as his cheek. “Give me a second.” He pretended to scribble something down on his desk as he glanced at the paper of the student next to him. “The integral of squared x minus one, of course,” he told the man. “Easy peezy.” He winked.

“Okay,” the teacher said, seeming a bit disappointed that he couldn’t stump the distracted brunet, and moved on.

Reed sighed in relief as he erased the pencil marks from his desk and swept away the eraser residuals. He spent the rest of the class squinting at the teacher, trying to figure out why he didn’t like him. The teacher was like, targeting him, locking down on him. It wasn’t like he did anything bad. Well, Reed supposed that his staring was starting to make the man uncomfortable, so maybe he should lay it off. And maybe he should lay off the desk drumming too.

After his classes, he met with the band again. Babycakes, honeybuns, studmuffin, they were all there before him. “Hey, folks, the life of the party is here, let’s get rollin’!” he shouted as he ran toward them with open arms, until he realized they were gathered around a piece of paper, instead of their instruments. “Uh oh, that paperwork looks scary.” He stopped in his tracks.

“It’s the application for the Play It Live competition,” Isobel explained.

Reed pivoted in his spot and started walking toward the door. “Call me back once you’re all done, Honeybuns!” he sang.

“Don’t call me that, you nincompoop,” Isobel said.

“Reed, come here and sit down!” Ali shouted, her voice sharp. “Don’t push off all the work on us.”

He slowed down and walked backwards, until he bumped into Joey, who shot him a look, and sat next to the jock. “Anything for Babycakes,” Reed said.

“Alright, back to business,” Joey said. “We’ve got to write down a band name, but the thing is, we don’t even have a band name yet.”

“I think something with one word could be catchier and easier for people to remember,” Ali suggested.

“I’m happy with anything as long as it doesn’t sound lame,” Isobel commented.

“What kind of image do we want to have?” Joey asked. “Maybe something intense and hardcore. That way, we’ll be cool, and it wouldn’t be embarrassing to say our name.” He rubbed his chin in thought. “But not too hardcore, I’d rather not turn into a thrashing metal band, you know? Lay it on easy.”

“How about… the Studmuffins?” Reed asked, wrapping an arm around Joey and grinning.

“Well,” Joey said, shrugging and laughing. “We are studs.”

Reed gave him the finger guns. “Pew pew, you get me.”

“Pew pew, I get you,” Joey replied, shooting imaginary bullets in reciprocation.

“How about no?” Ali said, shaking her head, though a smile was clearly visible on her face. “It sounds a little too conceited, don’t you think? Something pretty humble or neutral, not self-grading but like… something that doesn’t really concern our confidence or esteem would be best, you know?”

“Something with an image would be best, like Joey said,” Isobel said, propping her feet on the table. “Something easy to say and make a logo out of.”

“I don’t know about you guys but my image is probably a woodwind reed because of my name,” Reed said. “Joey would be a football or some sort of sports ball, and Ali would probably be books. Isobel… ah, I don’t know exactly. But what if we combined those together like, books, woodwinds, balls, and Isobel?”

Ali waved him off. “Too much, too much,” she said.

“We could be Field Goal,” Joey suggested, his eyes suddenly brightening. “It could represent, I don’t know, how we’re only worth less than half the points of a touchdown but in the long run, we do matter you know?”

    “Nice one, Studmuffin!”

“That’s good but it’s a bit too sporty for me,” Isobel said, distracted with twirling a strand of her hair around her finger.

“I agree,” Ali nodded. She searched the room for ideas. “What if…” her eyes landed on the doorknob. “What if we did something about a keyhole? That’s not too sporty, and it could symbolize a lot of things too, since that seems to be what Joey was shooting for.”

    “The Lockpickers,” Reed said.

“We’re not here to become criminals,” Isobel said.

    “Lock and Key,” Joey said.

“That’s actually the title of a romance book I’ve read recently,” Ali said.

Joey scrunched up his nose. “Never mind.”

“Lockdown then,” Isobel muttered, almost inaudibly.

The room fell silent all of a sudden, like they ran out of comments to say, retorts to reply with, or the energy to shut another one down. Isobel looked up from her hair and met eyes with Joey, who had a wide-eyed, amazed expression, and suddenly, she liked the idea that was originally just a blind throw into a whirlpool of suggestions a little more than she originally did. Reed looked at Ali and nodded at her, and she nodded back at him.

“Yes,” Ali said. “That’s almost perfect.”

“Not sure what it symbolizes but it sounds pretty darn cool,” said Joey.

Reed leaned forward and playfully punched Isobel in the arm. She recoiled, since it hurt a little bit more than she expected.

“Hey,” Reed said, grinning. “Nice one, Honeybuns.” He sat back in his chair. “For a person who didn’t seem to care about the name, you have some pretty good ideas. Lockdown, it is.

HAHA THAT WOULD BE CUTE!!! LINA AND REED = BFFLS. I love the characters; they're so fun and bright.

Sorry for taking so long guys! Hopefully I'll become a little more active if life doesn't get too busy! I've been plotting a novel these past few months and I'm about ready to write it. =D I am taking a ton of sciency, memorization-heavy classes but hopefully, hopefully... I'll have time.

    Quote
Joey entered the house, the song still playing through his earphones. He shut off his iPod and took off the earphones, putting the electronic device on the end table under the stair as he walked pass the living room. He went straight to the kitchen and smiled to see his mother standing in front of the stove, preparing breakfast. It was a routine like this that he loved. Every morning he would wake up earlier than any of his family members and went for a run. When he got back, he would be greeted by the smell of his mother’s scrambled eggs and toast.

“How’s the run?” Julie asked, smiling at her only son. She plated the food she had just cooked and put it on the counter. Joey shrugged, taking a glass from the rack and filled it with tap water before drinking it.

“It’s good. The weather’s nice today,” he replied after swallowing and put the glass into the sink. “Going to take a shower,” he continued, wiping his sweaty forehead and made his way upstairs where he started to get ready.

After weeks of practicing, it was finally the day for the preliminary round for the Battle of the Bands. Joey woke up early than usual, feeling jittery which was normal for him when he was feeling nervous about something. Therefore, he went out for his morning run early, taking a different route that was farther than the one that he usually took. He needed to get rid of all the pent up energy or he would be too worked up to calm down.

After he was done showering and getting dressed in his usual get up, T-shirt, jeans and a pair of sneakers, he went back downstairs towards the kitchen. Upon entering the room, he saw that his father was already there, sitting on the dining table, reading a newspaper while sipping his coffee.

He took a seat opposite to Gerard and quietly began to eat his breakfast that his mother had plated for him. The only sound could be heard was his mother clattering around the kitchen and the sound of cutleries hitting plates before Gerard started speaking.

“How’s football?” he asked, folding the papers and started to put jam on his toast, not looking at his son. Joey poked at his scrambled eggs and shrugged.

“It’s okay. Coach Herman said the scouts will be coming to see the game next month,” Joey replied. Gerard responded with a non-committal noise but didn’t say anything more. “My band competition is today,” Joey said, wanting to see his father’s reaction. He was almost disappointed when Gerard didn’t say anything and just continued to eat his breakfast in silence. He however had expected the reaction so not saying anything, Joey began to eat.

    -

Joey twirled the drumsticks around his fingers as he watched the people moving about behind the stage. Isobel was sitting next to him, checking on her nails, her face showing no interest at what was happening around her. In front of them, Ali was pacing back and forth, worry was evident on her face.

“Will you sit down? You’re making me dizzy,” Isobel said with a roll of her eyes. Ali did stop for a moment, biting at her nail. She was about to open her mouth to say something but stopped herself when they saw Mrs. Morrison making her way towards them.

“Is he here yet?” she asked, looking at the three teenagers. Joey responded by shrugging, his face blank to mask what he was actually feeling inside. Isobel just raised her shoulders as Ali had started pacing again.

“Of all days to be late,” she muttered, resuming to bite on her nail.

Joey stopped playing with his drumsticks and stretched his arms a little, his joints releasing a satisfying pop. He stood up, shoving the drumsticks into the back pocket of his jeans. He would’ve called Reed if he had the guy’s phone number but he had purposely deleted it from his contact right after Reed put it in his phone. Joey just didn’t see the importance of keeping his number since their band practice schedules were already set and if there was any change, any of them would just tell him at school.

“Has anyone called him?” Mrs. Morrison asked.

“I had but it went straight to voicemail,” Ali answered, sitting down on another chair next to Isobel.

    “Typical Reed,” the red-head mumbled.

“We can play without him,” Joey decided which got an immediate response from both Ali and Mrs. Morrison.

“That can’t happen!” both of them exclaimed at the same time, eyes wide as plates.

“Why not? He obviously doesn’t take this seriously enough to come on time. Maybe we should just kick him off the band.”

“This is a disaster,” Ali sighed, burying her face in her palms. Mrs. Morrison was dialling someone, probably trying to get hold of the bassist. Joey looked at Isobel who still didn’t show any interest at her surroundings. She returned his look with a raised eyebrow. He quickly averted his gaze and shifted his attention towards one of the backstage crews who was making his way towards them.

“You’re on in five minutes,” he said to them before writing something on the clipboard in his hand and walking away while talking onto his walkie-talkie.

Ali had gotten up again, this time she looked like she was ready to cry. Joey was worried that Mrs. Morrison would break her phone with the way she kept punching at the screen with her finger vigorously.

“Hello, awesome bandmates!” At that voice, all four of them turned to see that Reed had finally shown up. He had his usual shit-eating grin on his face, his bass was in its case, one strap slung over his shoulder.

“Good for you to show up,” Joey said, crossing his arms in front of his chest, eyeing Reed up and down. His jaw clenched as Reed moved closer and slung an arm around Joey’s shoulders which he shrugged off.

“Why so grumpy, Studmuffin?” Reed asked mockingly, then laughed at his own joke. Joey rolled his eyes at the childish teenager beside him, decided that it would be better for him to ignore Reed now before they had to perform. Letting his feelings taking over wouldn’t be good.

“Stop calling me that and it’s our turn,” Joey stated, nodding his head towards the crew that had started calling them to get ready on stage.

At that, Isobel and Ali got up from their seats as Reed started to get his bass guitar out from the case and slung the strap over his shoulder. Mrs. Morrison wished them luck, patting each of their back a few times before they all got on the stage.

Joey went straight to the drum kit and sat on the stool as his eyes swept over the audience. There were four people sitting on the judges’ table, three men and one woman. The woman looked as if she was bored already while the three men were chatting among themselves, completely ignoring them.

His band mates had started to get their instruments ready, connecting the jacks to the amplifiers. Joey took his drumsticks from his back pocket and gripped them tightly. After they were ready, Ali made her way forward towards the microphone stand. She cleared her throat to get the judges’ attention.

“Uh… we are Lockdown,” she said, introducing the band before turning a little to nod at Joey. Joey got the cue. He lifted both his arms up and hit his drumsticks together, counting.

“One, two, one, two, three, four!”

Just like that, they started playing.
