Ava sighed lightly as they made their way over to the castle. The king's celebration was tonight. It was supposed to be a great thing - but she also had to put up with the prince - her betrothed. Prince Alexander... It wasn't like he was that bad of a guy - a perfect guy, fit for the princess of another kingdom, but that didn't mean she was for this arranged marriage. She knew love must come in time though, so she went along happily to the castle, wanting to enjoy this celebration. In all reality, she was happy to have been paired with such an eligible man. And this would be her lovely new home soon enough.

Alexander smiled a little as he greeted the first of the guests to arrive - having stood around in the ballroom to watch all of the servants run around in madness to get everything prepared for the last moment. Oh well... It was definitely fit for a king - and not only a birthday celebration but a celebration to announce the marriage in planning of him and Princess Ava. That was why he was waiting at the door - to meet his betrothed. He put on his best face about it, knowing he was going to have to enjoy it - even if there were plenty of girls that watched him now, and he wished he could make a move, but he couldn't. It was his duty as prince.

Rebecca stood in the corner of the ballroom dressed in her finest clothing, a brown shapeless dress, it was all she owned. Her brown hair was hidden under a bonnet. She watched as crowds of guests piled into the ballroom all laughing and joking with each other. Rebecca yearned to be like that. To be more then just a chambermaid, she wanted long elegant gowns and she wanted to be noticed by more then the old men on the street. Sighing her light eyes lingered over to the Prince who stood in all his glory welcoming guests to his fathers much awaited birthday celebration.

Alexander Walter, a beautiful specimen. Strong chiseled features and eyes of the deepest blue. He was the definition of beauty. Sadly however he was already taken by the Princess, Ava Kornin.

"Rebecca," came the harsh whisper of Mrs. Wattle. The brunette turned to look at the old woman as she hobbled toward her. "You are to look after the Princess tonight. As soon as she enters those doors you are to go to her and introduce yourself, tell her you are her maid tonight. Is that understood?"

"Yes Mrs," she nodded her head, the older lady smiled, it was more of a grimace then a smile, before hobbling off to attend to other matters.

    ~

James stood in the stables tending to the horses, his favourite was the cobalt mare, Franchesca, she was a wedding present to the new Princess. A present that her future husband would bestow upon her to signify his love.

"Hello my darling," James whispered as he walked toward the beautiful animal reaching out his hand and petting her neck. She whinnied appreciatively as she stepped toward him his ear pressed to her warm coat.

"The Princess will be lucky to have you as her pet," he smiled looking into the horses dark, obsidian eyes. Moving away from her he grabbed a brush and began to detangle the knots from her mane.

Princess Ava was sure dressed to impress. Not always did she wear such long elegant ball gowns, but she always liked an excuse to have one - and she knew the kingdom would give her many excuses. She was nervous as she was dropped off and ushered to the door.

She was meeting her beloved today... Or well, she was meeting the man that would be her beloved, but they had yet to meet. Her stomach was in a knot - yet she was calm, just like a princess had always been taught.

When she met him, she curtsied to him and he bowed to her.

    ~

Alexander was actually pleasantly surprised to meet the girl he was going to marriage. She wasn't half bad at all - her beauty was unlike any of the young women who he could've ended up with.

He took her hand in his after their exchange of bows and he kissed the back of her hand, smiling lightly at her. "M'lady." He said with a smile, though he spoke softly and calmly and he guided her arm around his elbow, so they would be walking together.

"Care to walk with me?" And of course she did. It wasn't like she could really say no - but he was glad that she agreed nonetheless.

[sorry for taking a while, been busy with work]

Rebecca had been standing at the back of the ballroom, trying to blend in with the wall, when the Princess entered. She was a sight of beauty. Her blue gown, elegantly plaited hair and the smile that was spread across her face. She was about to walk up to the young Ava before she was in front of Alexander. The brown haired chambermaid ceased her movements watching as the two of them walk off. A loud cough resounded beside the woman, turning her head she saw Mrs. Wattle was glaring at her.

Well... she mouthed before nodding her head in the direction of the brown haired royal. Her heart was beating rapidly in her chest as she got closer to the two.

"Your highness, my lady," she bowed before the two. "Princess, I am Rebecca and I will be your maid for the evening... if you need anything please tell me." Rebecca repeated her well rehearsed speech.

    ~

James had finished brushing Franchesca, he sneaked her a sugar cube before moving onto the next pair of chestnut foals. He ran his hands through their manes laughing as they whinnied and butted their heads against his palms.

"Sage, Eliowyn," he chuckled as they whinnied happily at the sound of the blondes voice. James began to play with the foals. Until he heard his name.

"JAMES! What are you doing?" the stable boys hands dropped as he turned to look at Archibald, King Henry's right hand man storming toward him.

    "I was just..."

"Get out! Alexander and Ava will be here soon and you are not to be seen!" Archibald growled. The blonde nodded his head quickly as he jumped out of the yard. "To your quarters now!" James obeyed walking to his sleeping quarters as he mumbled to himself.

Archibald was always mean to James, nothing he ever did was good enough. James wanted to hit the man more than anything but he knew he would lose his job in the stables resulting in no income for his family.

[no problem! I'm starting orientation for college so I understand!]

Ava smiled lightly as Prince Alexander talked to her. Yes, he was quite the charmer. Perhaps that was expected of the prince to his betrothed, but she enjoyed it still. Her arm was looped in his and she smiled lightly.

This couldn't be too bad. And then a maid came up to her and she smiled lightly, enjoying the slight distraction because she still wasn't sure how she felt about Alexander.

"It is lovely to meet you." She spoke in her most eloquent voice and smiled to her. She didn't servants were all bad - unlike most, so she might as well be nice to her. It never hurt.

    ~

Alexander was growing a little impatient - especially as the maid came up and had to talk to Ava. Did she not know she should wait until called upon?! Or was that impossible to understand for her? He scoffed a little and then grabbed Ava's hand lightly.

"Come Ava - I've got something I want to show you." He smiled lightly and swept her away.

They were going out to the stables. Going out for a ride. It was a nice pastime of Alexander's and he hoped that she would enjoy it equally as much.

"Do you like to ride?" He asked her as they hit the stables.

Rebecca noticed the annoyance on the Princes' face as soon as she stopped the two of them. Hearing him scoff before taking Princess Ava's arm and gently pulling her away. Rebecca stepped back from the two as they moved away from her. She bowed gently before turning and walking back to stand against the wall of the ballroom.

The young maid instantly thought of her brother who worked in the stables, she hoped he was finished and out of there before Alexander and Ava appeared. She didn't want him getting in trouble for being there.

    ~

James was walking toward the servant quarters when he heard tinkling laughter, slowing his movements he turned his head and scanned the darkness to find where the noise was coming from. He saw shadows moving toward the stables so he assumed it was the Prince an Princess coming to see the new wedding presents. The closer the two got the more light shone on them. In the brief seconds James had he saw the Princess Ava; she was dressed in a beautiful blue down and her long brown hair was pulled back into a plait. He didn't have long to look before they disappeared into the stables. Turning James continued to the servant quarters thinking to himself.

Ava smiled lightly as she came upon the wedding present inside the stables and she nodded her head, reaching up to pet the coat of one of the horses.

"Yes, I do indeed love to ride. I have since I was a child." She said happily and it was clear that Alexander was happy about this too. That was a major condition of marriage for him - he had to be with someone who would be interested in things that he was interested in.

    --

Alexander smiled and touched the mane of the one horse, his horse. "Good, I'm glad." He said with a laugh. "Riding is a good thing to do."

He looked at her before grabbing her waist and placing her on one of the horses. To which she laughed like crazy - because she wasn't expecting it, but she was glad that this was going so well.

Then they set off to ride.

James was nearing the servant quarters when he heard the sound of thundering hooves on the dirt, turning he saw the royals racing out of the stables. which surprised him. Surely the King would be inside his castle mingling and enjoying the attention he was receiving from everyone in the room. The blonde continued toward the servants quarters when he heard a piercing scream cut through the night.

Instinctively he raced toward the sound, he knew that it had to have been the Princess, jumping over fences he sped passed the stables and into the darkness of the forest that surrounded the castle grounds.

That was when he saw the King had been thrown from Sage and the Princess was nowhere to be seen.

"Your Highness," he began, "What happened?" however the blonde knew what had happened Eliowyn had been spooked by something and had taken off.

"Your stupid horse threw me and the other sped off with my beloved," he groaned clutching his head.

"I will find her my lord," with that he climbed onto Sage not waiting for the King to object or say anything before taking off.

Ava was surprised as she kept rushing through the trail. She had no idea where she was or how she was ever going to stop this horse. The horse had been spooked and it was hard to calm down such a nervous horse.

They were rushing at a speed too fast for Ava to feel comfortable at and she was just clinging onto the horse for dear life, feeling scared and unsure of what to do right now.

She felt slightly silly, but there was nothing for her to do.

James sped through the forest his ear straining over the thundering of Sage's hooves, his eyes scanning the darkness looking for some sort of movement or listening for a sound, a snapping branch, another scream anything.

Finally after several moments Sage had caught up with Eliowyn, the young mare had stopped and was leaning down munching on grass, however the Princess was no where to be seen. Sliding off Sage he looked around for the dark haired woman.

"Princess?" he called as he began to walk forward. twigs snapping under the soles of his boots.

Ava was not exactly impressed by the way that her horse had been spooked like that, so the first second the animal had stopped, she slipped off of her and had wandered off into the forest, not at all enjoying being alone here, but she knew she felt too odd to stay here.

She heard a call to her and twigs snapping, but she continued walking, snapping on her own twigs though she was trying to be quiet. What if this person on pursuit of her wasn't a good character? She would find her way out on her own. She always had before.

    ~

Alexander was called back into the party.

He felt slightly odd, going out with the princess on his arm and coming back without, but duties were duties - and he expected that James would take good care of her on their way back and then escort her in to him. He would have a lot of apologizing to do - but it was the horse's fault! Not his.

James ceased his movements and listened for the Princess, the young man had a keen ear and could tell which direction a person was heading or how far away they but a simple sound, like a twig snapping. Hearing more twigs snaps he took off into the heart of the forest, light on his feet and quick, he scaled the Princess tracks before he saw her figure up ahead, the slivers of light from the full moon helped him. Racing up to her he fell in step with her.

"Princes Ava I am here to take you back to the King." he paused before introducing himself, "I am James Reid, I work in the stables at the castle."

    ~

Rebecca stood against the castle walls watching as the royals went about their business, talking and laughing at everything. The dark hair maid watched as they all wandered around several taking to the dance floor. That was when she saw the King walk into the building, however he was Princess-less.

The young woman debating whether or not to walk up to him and ask where his bride-to-be was, she quickly chose against it instead staying against the wall but her eyes never left him as he mingled with his guests.

Ava was surprised when some man walked up to her. Most weren't allowed to do that - especially stable men... But she assumed this was a rare case considering what had happened.

She had always learned to blame the work for problems that arose, so instantly she wanted to lash out at him though it wasn't his fault. "Perhaps you should teach the horses a slight more discipline, now shall you?" She asked and then continued walking.

"Now - where is my king? Why did he not come to get me?"

    --

Alexander mingled with the guests. A few times he caught his eyes locked with the servant girl and he would glare. Of course she was probably judging him that he had lost his princess. He would've gone after her himself if not for the party.

He felt like she was a good fit for him, Princess Ava. She was only 3 years his junior and she seemed to hold some of his same interests. That was a nice thing at least.

He finally approached the servant girl though, growing annoyed. "Is there a problem I can help you with, girl?" He asked her.

James rolled his eyes in the darkness, of course it was his fault that the horse got spooked and bolted. As beautiful as the Princess he was beginning to see why the King was betrothed to her.
"Of course your Highness," he said when all he wanted to do was snap at her and tell her that it wasn't his fault that the mare bolted. Instead the blonde kept his words to himself before answering her question.

"The King had to return to his guests," James stated, "And he told me that I was to return you. So if you would come with me I can get you back to the castle." the blonde started to walk back the way he had come.

    ~

Rebecca was startled by the King stalking toward her, his question was laced with annoyance. The brown haired maid cleared her throat awkwardly before looking down at her dirty shoes. "N-No your Highness.... I simply wondered where your betrothed was... I am supposed to be watching her when she is not in your care." Rebecca kept her eyes to the ground not daring to look up at the royal

Ava sighed a little as she was forced to walk back with him and she thought over what she had said to him, shaking her head. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to blame you." She said seriously and then sighed.

There was a long bout of silence before she came around to asking what she really wanted to know. "Now - about the King? Is he a good king?" She asked, wanting an opinion on him.

    --

Alexander rolled his eyes slightly at his answer. "Damn girl - look at me when I am speaking to you!" There is nothing more infuriating than that." He said and then shook his head.

Damn, leave it to a servant to have to wonder what happened. Couldn't she just stay oblivious.

"The princess is in your brother's care at the moment. He should be bringing her in. If you must, go find her."

[Sorry this has taken so long!!!! Arms but here I am... been busy and suffering from writers block! so sorry!!!]

James instantly felt a little less anger to her when she apologised. "It's fine, you had a bit of a scare, it's understandable." he stated as he continued to walk through the forest to get back to the castle where the King awaited her. James hesitated.

Alexander was a good King, yes, but he had a temperament, he was known for his anger and lack of control over it. James knew better then to speak ill of the king so he kept those words to himself instead he answered with. "Yes, he is a good King, he does what's best for the Kingdom." and it wasn't a lie.

    ~

Rebecca was startled by the Kings temper, quickly she lifted her gaze to look up at him, her eyes locked with his.

"Sorry my Lord," she apologised. nodding her head she hurried out of the ballroom and into the night. She ran down through the gardens heading toward the stables where she assumed her brother would be.

"James!" she called out through the night waiting for his reply.

"Rebecca!" he called back, it was distant, she followed his voice until she came to the entrance of the forest where she saw his shadow and the Princesses. "You're here for the Princess?"

"I am," was all she said before walking toward the royal. "Come your Majesty the King seeks you."

[glad to have you back! Arms don't forget our other!]

Ava smiled a little and nodded. "Yes, good. At least if I'm to marry it is nice to know that the man is respectable." She said and then sighed as another, the woman from before, called to them. The quiet out here was pleasant. It was probably a place that she would spend a lot of time - out here.

"Thank you - for finding me." She said with a smile to the male servant who she couldn't exactly remember the name of. Had they ever been properly introduced? She wasn' sure now.

    "Yes, back to fhe party."

    --

Alexander was quite pleased to see that Rebecca was bringing her back in and he nodded lightly, happily. At least he had to admit that his betrothed was beautiful - that suited him well.

He walked towards the two and then bowed lightly. "Milady," he said, stooping to kiss her hand. "Thank you rebecca for your assistance. I hope it was all in good care." He indirectly asked of Ava and after a moment's pause, she nodded her head.

[Sorry for such a break, I have been flat out, with working and holidays but I am back now!!! Arms]

James lingered around the doors of the castle. The flickering light of the burning torch rippled orange colour across his face. The blonde haired commoner watched as the young Princess entered with his sister, her dress a little dirty but nothing to worry about. Princess Ava was definitely beautiful with her brown hair that had been pulled back so it trailed down the curve of her spine. The blue of her dress glimmered with every movement, as she took the Kings hand and was led onto the dance floor both were smiling and he could tell she was already in love with him and he her. Sighing he turned and walked away from the castle back to the stables where he would spend the night, among the horses.
Rebecca bowed gently at the thanks she received from Alexander, when he took his Princess's hand she stepped back taking her place against the wall waiting to be called upon to help. Rebecca watched as the two royals danced. Their eyes staring deeply into one and others, both in love with each other. A small niggling feeling of jealousy stirred in the young woman as the two looked at each other with such love and adoration. The love and adoration that the young maid desperately wanted. Sighing she bowed her head looking down at her now dirty shoes.

"It will never happen, he is a King and you are nothing more then a hand maid," she whispered harshly to herself.

Princess Ava smiled a little as she danced, ever so slowly warming up to his touch and wanting more of his touch. She was okay with that. Still, somehow her mind wandered. She thought of the blonde that had helped her back. He was cute - was he not? He seemed like a good kind of man... Not that the king himself wasn't, but she could just tell that this servant - this James - was extra special.

"You should really pay some extra attention to the stable boy - he did help bring me back to you after all." She said to him.

Alexander sighed and nodded his head. "Very well - perhaps you are right. He shall be rewarded for bringing my betrothed back - is that what you want of me?"

Somehow he was frustrated. His eyes shimmered over to the maid who was standing at the wall. He couldn't help it really - he was the king, he could look at or have any girl he wanted - and no one would even care, would they? No, he knew they wouldn't. But he had his betrothed too, and he knew that most certainly he had to make an effort to love her. She was supposed to be his and he was glad about that. Even if this maid was quite pretty.
