Rebecca stood against the wall looking at her shoes, she was bored and sick of watching everyone dancing. The brunette wanted to retire to her bed. She wanted to get off her aching feet and try get a decent amount of sleep, however she knew she wasn't able to leave until she was dismissed.

Sighing she lifted her head stretching it slightly to crack it easing the pain of having her head bowed over for so long. That was when she noticed a pair of eyes staring at her. Looking toward the dancing king her breath stuck in her throat when the two locked eyes. Quickly she averted them her heart racing in her chest.

He had been looking at her? Surely she was dreaming, there was no way he, the King, would have been looking at her, a chambermaid.
James had made it back to the stables and was making himself comfortable in the hay, he could heard the music from the castle but no matter how hard he tried he wasn't able to drift off to sleep instead his mind was busy with thoughts of the princess. The Princess that he had chased after and returned to the King unharmed.

Alexander smiled lightly as he caught her eye and then realized that he shouldn't be. He had his betrothed in his arms. He was supposed to love her... But he just couldn't - it didn't feel right -not at all!

He looked away and cuddled his face into Ava's hair for a moment, smiling. "Has anyone ever told you you're beautiful?" He asked with a smile and kissed her cheek.

    ~~

Ava smiled a little and shook her head. "No one has said it quite like you do." She said happily and smiled at him. She was growing slightly tired - or maybe she just wished to get back outdoors to the stables like she would do if she were home...

"Well Alexander... I think perhaps it's time that I retire. You've worn me out here." She said teasingly at him and smiled at him happily.

Rebecca's eyes were growing heavy with fatigue, she had spent the day labouring around the castle helping set up for the celebration as well as helping her brother out with the horses. The brown haired maid had been up since the early hours of the morning to get everything she needed to do done. She was starting to regret it now when all she wanted to do was curl up in her tattered blanket and sleep the night away.

She knew it was selfish but all she wanted was the brown haired royal to dismiss her for the rest of the night so she could scurry to her chamber and rest her weary body. Looking up she watched as the two danced, the way Alexander pulled his betrothed close caused a hot surge of jealousy to simmer in her blood. Tearing her eyes away she looked around the room looking for anything to distract her thoughts.

How could he stare at her like he had been doing and then return to the girl in front of him with close touches and secret whispers. He was a tease and it was causing havoc on the chambermaid.

[I'm going to leave James out of here because I'm not sure what to do with him tehe]

Alexander smiled and nodded his head. He understood that and he smiled. "Well, if we hadn't had the mishap with the horses, I'm sure I would be able to stay in your company longer." He said, leaning his forehead to hers.

She laughed and shook her head. "It was a lovely night - horses and all." She wanted to go back out to the stable to be honest. It was her favorite place. "Let me just relieve the maid and then I shall be on my way for the night."

She went over to Rebecca and smiled. "Your duties are done for the night. Thank you for being so good." She said. "I'm Ava, by the way - no need to call me anything but Ava." She didn't want to seem higher up, even though she was.

Alexander took her by the arm then and led her away to her chambers. They laughed and smiled as they went. At least they got along.

"Good nice, my dear." He said and leaned in, almost for a kiss, but he chickened out and chose her cheek instead. He just couldn't bring himself to kiss her... He left her then, and went back to the party, feeling emptier - especially since the pretty maid had gone.

Ava hadnt gone to her room either. Instead she found her way back out to the stables. She wanted some time to enjoy herself with the horses.

Rebecca had been lost in her thoughts when the dark haired Princess walked over to her, quickly she curtsied before looking up at her. When she relieved her of her duties Rebecca could have screamed with joy. The fact that she got to get off her feet and sleep was amazing.
"Thank you... Ava," she hesitated to take Princess first name. When Alexander took her by the arm Rebecca quickly bowed again looking down and listening as the two walked out of the room. Once she knew they were gone she lifted her head and began to walk toward her quarters where she would collapse and fall asleep in an instant.

Entering the room she removed her apron and dress leaving her in her cotton under dress, quickly she burrowed underneath the tatty blankets on her thin mattress closing her eyes and falling asleep almost instantly.

Alexander went back to the party, not knowing what to do with himself without his betrothed, but he knew he had to be back there. It was his party after all and he had to entertain the guests. He had to be the good guy that would be a good king - that way everyone supported him. Right now he would entertain the idea in some girls' heads that he would give them a chance, so he would dance with them.

And dance he did. He liked dancing with different girls - seeing the way their eyes sparkled at him. It was entertaining. And he liked it, even though he knew that he was betrothed.

    --

Ava smiled as she walked out to the stables and she opened the door, slipping in through a small opening so she wasn't opening the whole door. It creaked a little and she gasped. Hopefully she wasn't disturbing anyone up here.

She smiled as she walked through the stables and she touched the nose of one horse.

James had just settled in for the night, he was mere seconds away from sleep. His body was slowly shutting down allowing itself to relax when he heard the doors to the stables open bringing him back to full senses. Slowly the male crawled from his spot on the hay in the rafters so he was peering down over the edge. James was surprised at who he saw underneath.

Princess Ava still in her gorgeous gown was walking though the stables reaching out and touching the nose of one of the horses. She didn't look afraid or angry from what he could tell. She seemed happy and was enjoying the company of the animals. He watched the way the horse nuzzled her hand enjoying her touch.

"He likes you," instantly he kicked himself. He should have known better then to just randomly blurt out a sentence at the young Princess.

    [sorry - finals week!]

Ava gasped a little as she heard a voice and she jumped, taking a step backwards, wrapping her arms around herself. It was a reflex. She was easily scared - especially because she didn't know anyone here... For all she knew, he could hurt her.. But she had come out here willingly so she felt silly then.

She looked around until she spotted the boy and she breathed a little softer. "You scared me up there..." She said and then nodded her head. "I'm sorry for just coming out here randomly, but I like the company of the animals."

She smiled at him. She wanted to seem comfortable even if he was new to her.

    [no that's totally fine]

A smile spread across the blondes face when she didn't scream or shout. Instead she spoke kindly to him. When she admitted she seemed the company of the castles animals he nodded his head before he turned and began to climb down from the loft.

Landing on his feet he brushed himself off to make himself a little more presentable. "Does the King mind you seeking company with his animals?" he asked a gentle smile spread across his face.

Ava was surprised as he started to come down from the loft and she touched the nose of the horse, smiling lightly. she just liked being out here... It made her feel at home for some reason... Which was so strange.

She heard his words and giggled. "I suspect not- but I wouldn't know. He hardly knows im out here.. I retired from the party and he left me at my chambers... I'm used to visiting the stables before I sleep though." She said with a smile at him.

"Ah I see the Princess has a bit of a rebellious streak," he joked as he watched the Princess pat the horse that stood beside her. He watched as the mare leant into her touch neighing softly. There was no denying that this old mare liked the Princess, to be honest it was the first time the horse had warmed up to any other female, most of the maids who come down here can never get close to her.

James looked at the Princess and smiled. "Would you like to ride her... I know it's late but just around the stables couldn't hurt, could it?"

Ava giggled slightly at his words. "I would hardly say rebellious - im a very good girl." She said with a smile, teasingly putting her hands on her waist. She was always the innocent girl who never did anything wrong. That was just how she was. She continued patting the mare and smiled.

"Oh - so you're encouraging my bad behavior then?!" She asked teasingly but nodded. "Yes - I would very much like to ride her. I like some late night rides!" She said happily.

"Bad behaviour, I don't know what you are talking about your Highness," he joked playfully. When the Princess agreed to a nightly ride he quickly raced around grabbing a saddle and the reigns. Within a few minutes he had the mare all ready for riding.

"Does the Princess need help getting on?" he asked as he watched her. James eyed the mare who stood perfectly still like the well behaved animal that she was. Willow, she had always been his favourite. She had a kind and gentle manner with everyone. She showed nothing but love for everyone who was near her.

Princess Ava smiled a little as he got the horse ready for her. He seemed eager to please - a very good servant. He was probably the one that all of the servant girls were whispering about then... Yes, she could see why.

"If you would be so kind, yes..." She said softly, needing a slight boost. She loved riding though - this is where she felt most calm... Especially right now with her impending marriage - she felt good that she still had a hideaway place like this.

James walked over to the royal and helped her onto the mare, he watched as she righted herself and he noticed how perfect she looked on a horse even if she wore her evening dress instead of the gowns most royals wore when riding a horse. James couldn't help but think what the King would think if he saw his betrothed now. Would he be mad? Impressed? the thoughts flittered from his mind when Willow began to move forward slowly.

"Do you plan on going outside or are you going to stay in the stables?" the blonde asked wanting to know if he would need to open the doors and make himself scarce. Just incase his royal highness saw Princess Ava on Willow.

Princess Ava smiled a little and shook her head as she steadied herself on the horse. "No - I wouldn't want to get you in trouble, would I?" She said and shook her head. "I think my betrothed might be angry if he saw me out here - and I wouldn't want you to get in trouble for conspiring with me!"

    [sorry for the lateness tehe]

"I would hope not," the blonde haired male joked as he looked up at the Princess who sat on the mare with a small smile on her face. Ava radiated grace, perfection and royalty. Shooting her a kind a smile he stepped back from the mare and allowed it to step forward. Bowing his head he watched as the two trotted towards the exit of the stable.

"PRINCESS!" James' heart dropped when he heard her being called away. The blonde hurried over to the young Princess. "PRINCESS!" the voice came again. It was deep and masculine. James prayed it wasn't Alexander. He wasn't sure what the royal would say or do if he saw her on a horse.

"Princess," he held out his hand to help her off.

Ava smiled a little at him and nodded her head. As she rode towards the exist, she gasped a little as she heard a voice calling her. She wasn't used to Alexander's voice yet but she knew it was him... She was quite sure.

She gasped and jumped down from the horse with James's help and then pushed him into a stall. "Go - you can't be here or you're going to get in trouble."

    --

Alexander had chosen to go back and check on his bride. He wanted her to at least be happy - and he was worried since she had retired so early, maybe she would be lonely and would want to chat.

He was amazed when she wasn't there and then gasped. Out at the stalls... Of course that was where she would be right now...

He called to her and then stormed into the stables.
