She watched her surroundings swirl past outside the window and glanced over at the man in the driver seat. "This isn't the way back to Kraemer."

"Teach me some doctor shit," The man repeated slowly, brows furrowed. "Rule one of doctor shit: doctors don't talk like that. It sounds unprofessional, and you don't want someone like that trying to save your life." She was amusing, however, and he doubted she actually cared about being a doctor, anyhow.

"They just tell me where to go. Hell if I knew the way." He apologized gruffly.

    --

"How would a doctor save a little kid that got shot in the stomach?" Jasmin's tone switched, sounding very, eerily serious. "Could they?"

The girl's gaze flickered back out the window and she allowed her forehead to thud softly against it, eyes closing for a moment or two.

    -

The girl suddenly seemed dead serious, and the man hardly hid the fact that he was taken aback. "It depends on the wound, the technology available, everything."

His foot tapped the brake, and he tore a blanket from his bag, slipping it over her. "You can go ahead and sleep, darlin'." His voice was uncharacteristical
    y soft.

    ---

"Oh." She could barely stifle dry laughter, tears pressing behind her eyes.

The girl moved the blanket off of her legs without looking at him, a glimmer of agitation coursing through her. She didn't want or need his pity.

    -

"Why do you ask?" Drunk or not, it was an oddly specific question for her to ask.

"What? I'm bein' nice. You could always run out if you wanted. I mean, I could gun you down easy, but..." He realized what'd he had said and smiled, all goofy and blushing. "Hey, don' run. Forget I said that. I'll even let you get in a punch if you want something to show off once we get there." He wanted to pull the blanket over her desperately. It was cold. She was all hard edges and closed doors.

And she just had those eyes...
    --

She sniffed, using her sleeve to briefly plug her nose. "My sibling got shot. She ran away from me because I was gonna make her eat her peas. She ran into the middle of training. Pow. Shot in the stomach. Ate out her liver." Jasmin lifted her hand and formed a gun with her first few fingers, aiming at nothing, mouthing 'pow, pow' for drunken effect.

She lowered her head, covering her eyes as a tear managed to fall. She was usually so put-together, so frank and helpful and blabbering.

"Thank you for your kindness, but just take me to Pike." He'd offered to let her punch him if she wanted to show off, and part of her wondered if he even realized who she was in terms of her own army. She didn't need to show off, and didn't want to. She wanted to talk to Pike and get the hell out of dodge.

    -

Her finger gun and sound effects didn't quite fit what she'd said, but he dismissed it as part of her being drunk. "Awfully sorry about that. I can't imagine what that must've felt like." Even as a medic, he could already feel the dread setting into the pit of his stomach, the kind that only manifested itself when he knew a patient wouldn't leave his care alive.

He slammed his palm into the wheel, frustrated. "Look - I'm trying." He countered, losing his patience. "Just work with me. Take a nap. I'll get you some instruction soon."

    ---
"It felt like I got shot too. I mean, I did. Grazed. I ran out after she fell. But..." She nestled her head against his shoulder again. This time, with her senses. He was warm and curt and professional. Mostly warm. "Maybe she's somewhere happy."

The girl held her hands up in mock surrender for a moment before turning back to the window once more, not daring to take a nap but allowing her eyes to rest for a few long seconds each.

    -

The man murmured his agreement, admittedly uncomfortable with the topic of religion. He believed in God, and prayed, but felt awkward preaching about Him. God was just God to the man. He needed no explanation. "Ofcourse. I'm very sorry."

He drove in constant silence, eyes flicking to her once every few minutes to make sure she was all right.

    --
"Hey, it'll be fine. I jus' needed to know. Come on. You deal with enough sadness with this job." She tilted his face toward hers with a twist of her fingers against his chin.

After a few less-than-satisfactory naps, the girl opened her eyes and watched everything pass by. None of the buildings looked familiar, and none of the people coming in or out of them did, either.

Scott nodded, standing after a moment. "Speaking of job, as much as I'd love to keep talking to you, I've got other patients to attend to. Get some sleep, will you? That hangover will kill you, either way."

"So, do you have any family where you live?" He asked, looking for mild conversation.

    --

"I don't wanna sleep here. At all. Okay," She agreed tersely.
