Phoebe sat on her laptop in her bedroom, staring at the picture on the screen. The picture in question was the background on her laptop and she had recently realized exactly how badly she missed having a cat. She hadn't had a pet since a few years before she had graduated high school, and now she was moved out and in college. The picture was of the cat she had had, who had died of old age when she was a sophomore. Her parents were never huge pet people, but Phoebe was. She had loved animals all her life and had always told herself that she would get a bunch when she moved out. Well, now that she had, she knew that was financially impractical, but she had a steady job, low rent, and her bills were reasonable. There was no reason she shouldn't be able to afford a pet right now. Plus, she knew her landlords were total animal people and wouldn't have a problem with her having a cat. "Adie! Adie, I want a cat," she told her best friend and roommate who was in the other room.

She typed a few words into the search bar on her computer and found that the local animal shelter was only about 20 minutes away. In less than an hour, she could have a cat if her roommate agreed.
Danny poured a bowl of food for one of the many dogs here at the shelter. They were lucky to have the funding for such a large, nice establishment, he was glad to be a part of it. The animals were all well taken care of here, and it gave him a sense of pride when he saw an animal get a home. It was just nice to know that these pets were going to good homes with good people. "Hey there fella, how you doin' today?" He asked, giving the older golden retriever a pat on the head as it came to eat its food. He was answered with a kiss and a tail wag and Danny laughed. "Good. Maybe today's the day, eh?" He said, encouraging the older dog. Most people wanted kittens and puppies without realizing that adult animals needed homes too. They were usually better anyway, not having to be trained, already being spayed or neutered, and such. He loved the babies as much as the next person, but he wished that these older animals wouldn't have to stay for weeks and months, sometimes years on end without a proper family.

The shelter was like a family in itself, but it wasn't a proper home for these animals. They needed a person or people who didn't have a hundred other animals to care for on the daily like the volunteers at the shelter had to do. "I'm rooting for you, buddy," he told the retriever as he took closed the pen behind him and moved on to the next dog to feed.

Connor smiled a little as he made his rounds through the animal shelter. There was nowhere else he would rather be than here. He loved this place. Sure, he was a college student on the side, but working here was perfect. He loved working with the animals. It was nice - and he had nice people working with him too, like Danny. The animals were the best though. There was no best friend like an animal. He loved all of the dogs and the cats. Most identified as a cat or a dog person - he didn't classify himself as either. He was just a person. A person who loved animals in general. He was making his rounds through the cats now.

"Hi babies!" He said to the kittens who were in their small cages and he pulled one out, cuddling her to him for a moment and smiling. "You guys will find a home today, I can feel it." He said as he nuzzled her face and she held him close. He just wanted someone to love these animals. They deserved a home. He loved all of the animals here and he hated equally as much that they hadn't found homes for them yet. There were so many animals here. They were all so good, just looking for good homes, but they couldn't find homes. Just because they were shelter animals - and he hated that. He wanted someone who would just come and understand the animals as much as he did. That was probably why he was single too - because no one understood his connections to this place.

He was very passionate about that.

Adie gasped as she heard her roommate calling her name. She groaned a little. She was in the other room, making her breakfast when she heard this call and she had yet to have her coffee - so she wasn't very enthused by any sort of noise. And then she heard the reason for her being called and she gasped, nodding her head. "Oh my gosh, that would be so much fun!" She said happily and then shook her head. "But what about a dog too?"

Adie was more of a dog person.. She loved cats as well, but she had always had a dog growing up. She had continuously had a dog. As soon as one dog had was gone, another was always there. She was raised in a family of animal lovers, and she loved animals always. Now with the apartment, it just felt lonely and sad. Dogs always made the house so much happier to her. What sucked the most was that her last dog had died just before she had gone for college - and her parents vowed they wouldn't get a new dog for now. Why not? She wished they would, but maybe she really just missed her old dogs. She missed a house of dogs and the comfort that came from it. She was so used to the cuddling and the slobbery kisses. She needed that back - but was a dog too much to want to bring to an apartment? She didn't know. A cat

"I mean.. maybe that's a little ambitious - but let's go! At least I could look at a dog and cuddle with a dog!" She smiled lightly and pulled on clothes quickly, smiling at her best friend. A cat would suffice anyway. She loved cats too - though sometimes they were far less cuddly than her happy dogs were. "We better get a really cute kitten!" She giggled.

Phoebe came out of her room. "I think we could manage a dog and a cat," she said, nodding enthusiastically. "We'll see when we get to the shelter. It doesn't hurt to go look, right?" She smiled. She was extremely excited now, the possibility of having a fur baby in the apartment. "Let me get dressed!" She said, dashing back into her bedroom. She paused and popped her head back out to look at her friend. "We'll pick up double shot coffees on the way?" She added, knowing her friend needed her coffee in the morning to function.

She threw on a quick outfit and waited for Adie in the kitchen, popping a bagel in the toaster and nibbling on it as they left. True to it's directions, the shelter was about twenty minutes away, not including their quick stop at a local coffee joint. Phoebe probably shouldn't have gotten a coffee because now the caffeine was buzzing through her, adding to her already excited state. "Oh my gosh, I'm so happy," she squealed as she pulled them into a parking spot. She practically danced inside the building.
Danny was putting away the dog food when he heard the door chime. He headed towards the front of the building where the office part was. The office part was where they went through with the actual adopting of an animal, the people having to go through a small questionnaire and get submitted into the system to make sure they were able to care for the animal or animals they adopted. He stepped out from the dog area to see two gorgeous girls that looked to be the same age as him. From the cat section, Danny saw Connor come out and he nodded to his co-volunteer and also friend. "Hello! Welcome to the Sunnyville Pet Adoption Center!" He greeted, giving the girls a smile.

"I'm Danny, and this is my good friend Connor. What can we do for you ladies today?" He asked them. He was usually a friendly guy, but he always made sure to lay on some extra charm when pretty girls came in. He liked to flirt to begin with but it always helped in the adoption too. What could he say, hot guys advertising cute animals worked wonders.

Adie giggled lightly and nodded her head. "I think that would sound wonderful!" She said with a smile and nodded her head. She was a little more perky than usual but still exhausted - and when Phoebe mentioned picking up a coffee on the way, she was excited. Her best friend knew just how unbearable she was when she wasn't properly awakened by coffee in the mornings.

She dressed and then smiled as they went out the door. She sipped on the coffee contently and smiled. Good - she needed it. It was really funny, because coffee made her wild, but she needed it anyways. It helped her through the day. She took the coffee into the shelter with her and smiled at the cute boy that greeted them. She was a relatively shy girl and boys made her nervous - and through a few cute animals into the mix and she might as well die right now. She smiled a little, feeling the need to be flirty - because he was attractive and she wanted to make a good impression.

"Hi," She said with a smile. "We were looking to adopt - a cat... Possibly a dog too, just to brighten our apartment up." She said with a giggle. Should she introduce herself? She wasn't sure that was appropriate - he just worked here anyways; it wasn't like there was any interest or anything.

Connor smiled a little as he heard the chime of the door and he met Danny out in the front. Girls... He loved when it was girls. That was the benefit to working at an animal shelter - there were always girls; and girls happened to like guys that were interested in taking care of animals. That was always a very beneficial thing - especially when the girls were pretty like these two were. Especially the blonde. It was probably a bad thing to be looking to pick up girls that came into the shelter - but he didn't do it on purpose... This girl had just caught his eye like none before.

"Nice to meet you ladies." He said and then smiled. "Well my expertise is with the cats here, so if you want to see the cats, I'd be glad to show you around." He said, tipping his head slightly, almost towards the blonde girl. He sincerely hope she wanted to see the cats - and even more he hoped that the other wanted to see the dogs more than the cats. It was always easier to lay on the charm when there was one girl - but he needed to stop thinking like that. He would not go about picking up a girl this way! It was completely wrong.

"And I'm sure Danny would be happy to show you the dogs." He said with a chuckle to his co-volunteer.

They entered the building and Phoebe was pleasantly surprised by how big the place was. It was extremely nice too, she had no doubt that the animals here were being well taken care of as they waited for families to adopt them. She especially didn't doubt it when she saw the two cute guys come out from either sides of the lobby and greet them.

Phoebe smiled as they two boys greeted them, her focus more on Connor. She bit her lip and looked at Adie. "I can look at cats if you want to look at dogs?" She suggested to her friend. She wouldn't admit it yet, but she absolutely wanted Connor to show her the cats. He was extremely attractive, and she hoped she wasn't imagining it, but he seemed to be eyeing her as well. "We did say we would think about getting both," she reminded her friend, in case she still wasn't convinced. She may not be sure about Connor's attention to her, but Phoebe could tell that Danny was interested in Adie.
Danny's grin grew wider when the beautiful brunette mentioned wanting a dog. "I'd love to show you the dogs. Our facility is very affordable and we provide plenty of benefits with the adoption. A dog and a cat would be very easy on you financially, if that's the worry," he told them, his gaze remaining on the brunette. "What's your name?" He asked her. They were supposed to ask names anyway to better connect with the potential adoptive owners, but Danny sincerely wanted to know her name. "If you'll follow me this way, I can show you all our dogs. And if you want, I can set up a room for you to play with any of the dogs you may be interested in and get to know them," he suggested.

It probably wasn't morally right for him to use this job to pick up girls, but he didn't see the problem with it. He wasn't just trying to get in her pants or anything, he honestly loved his job and he also honestly wanted to get to know the beauty in front of him.

Adie smiled a little and nodded her head. She felt all shy and bashful. Usually boys didn't make her feel in such a way, but this guy did. For some reason, this guy, Danny, made her extra nervous. Maybe because it was partially because she was feeling all the way excited about finding a dog - and a cute guy made her even more excited about that. "Yea, that sounds like a perfect idea!" She said with a smile to her best friend. She could tell that she was attracted to Connor - and it was quite obvious he was quite attracted to her too. They would be cute together, she was sure and she was happy for her. If only it would go so well for her, but she didn't get her hopes up.

"I'm Adie." She looked up at him with soft eyes as he looked at her and she smiled softly. "That sounds great!" She said with a smile as she looked up at him and she eyed him carefully, wondering about him. "So how long have you been a volunteer here?" She asked, just curiously. If it was a crime to like a guy in an instance when she saw someone cute, she was definitely guilty.

    ~

Connor was actually really happy about the blonde's interest in seeing the cats - and he was even happier that she seemed okay with splitting up so that he could be alone with her. A little shameless flirting wouldn't hurt - and besides, it would all be okay... It would just be some charming fun, and if she didn't like it then, he would stop. He hoped she wouldn't mind.

He motioned for her to follow her and smiled. "We have a lot of cats here at the facility - a lot kittens too. Like one of the rescue cats we just got in about a week ago gave birth to a six kittens. All healthy and adorable. So - just if you're interested." He said as he led her into the back and he looked at her with a smile. "So, you know I'm Connor - what's your name?" He asked with a smile. It wasn't all that weird - they were supposed to ask names and be friendly anyways - and that was exactly what he was doing. He was just being friendly - though maybe there was part of him that wanted a little more too. And an animal lover? He could just about marry her now.
