Presumably we all read quite a bit, and in our reading we have presumably stumbled across a character or characters who have inspired or shaped us in some way. Who have those characters been for you guys?

    Mine have been:

Christopher Tietjens of Ford Madox Ford's tetralogy "Parade's End"
Fitzwilliams Darcy of Jane Austen's novel "Pride and Prejudice"
Sherlock Holmes of Arthur Conan Doyle's "Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" body of work

    - Despereaux + Scuro from The Tale of Despereaux, DiCamillo
    - Ender Wiggin from Ender's Game, Card
    - Atticus Finch from To Kill A Mockingbird, Lee
    - John from Brave New World, Huxley
    - And many more, but then I'd be writing reams

What was my mother thinking of handing me Brave New World when I was hardly twelve, I still don't know. But that can be questioned for the other books she gave me around that time to read (The Godfather, Hannibal Lecter, 1984, Les Miserables, The STranger...and then later once I'm older, she questions with much complaint about why "I question everything--", "think too much--", etc., but I digress. My bad.) Being raised in a suffocating conservative, religious household, the idea of free will, choice, and all those lovely things that make humans inherently humans made it unacceptable for me to break out of the norm.

But if there's one thing all my favorite literary characters taught me, it's to seriously not give a fuck about societal conventions, take life by the goddamned throat, and blaze through it all with a bang at the end.
