Something Evil's Lurking in the Dark

"You? Overslept? Are you feeling okay?" Emily joked, laughing as she nodded, moving closer to him. "Well, you deserve a day off. I'm sure you haven't had one in...well, ever." And although she was joking, she knew she was probably right. "No, no, it's okay, I'm about finished anyways. What happened was horrible, and it's not something that I'll forget, but at some point you have to move on," she explained, gesturing to the space around her. "This was part of moving on." She was no longer a frightened little lamb waiting to be slaughtered and she wasn't going to live her life like she was. Abruptly, she turned to him, her green eyes lit up. "Since it's your day off and all, we should do something, take advantage of it."

    --

Brayden gritted his teeth, balling his fist up when he realized that Callie was getting ready to cry. She wasn't the type to cry for every little thing and he knew how frustrating this situation was for her. He felt like crying himself. Then he thought about that monster upstairs, trying to disguise itself as him. That was not him, nor would it ever be. He needed to protect Callie, and he'd do so no matter the cost. He floated up, entering their bedroom, looking at the beast laying on it. By the way it smirked at him, he knew it could see his every movement. Without another word, he pounced on it, trying to strangle it to death. It might kill him, but so be it. At least that thing couldn't hurt his Callie.

Oliver chuckled since it had taken him by surprise as well. Never had he overslept like a regular human being. It was as if there were an internal clock inside of him that always worked, except for today. "I tried convincing myself of that, but I had nothing to do at home. You were the first person that came into my mind, so I decided to stop by." He explained his thinking process, hoping that it would clarify the circumstances. "Good, it is important to move on from these types of tragedies." He smiled since many past victims became to absorbed in their own cases. That eventually lead to counseling, but at least Emily seemed to be feeling better. He blinked over at her, unsure of what they would do. "Such as?" He questioned, sitting up slightly.

    --

Drawing her arms around her, Callie walked over towards the table to grab a tissue. She was careful not to accidentally touch her eyeliner while dabbing her eyes then proceeding to blow her nose. With a sigh, she balled it up to throw it out into the trash can. It was awful having to live like this. Callie decided to check up on Brayden, hoping that he had not disappeared once again. Tip-toeing up the stairs, she had a doubt in the back of her mind as if she were walking into a trap. What if he was waiting upstairs to kill her? At this stage, he was unpredictable. With her bare feet, she padded over towards their bedroom to stick her head inside. Callie's eye widened, seeing that Brayden was having difficulty breathing. It was possibly because of the real Brayden. "N-No! You're killing yourself!" She rushed over, seeing that Brayden was practically blue.

"I don't know. It's a big world, I'm sure we could find something to do." Emily shrugged, looking over at Oliver. He had been alive for so long, he must have experienced so many different things, eras she could only dream about. She felt a twinge in her heart, wanting to experience something like that. She had moved to New Shire from Seattle, but that was about as much traveling as she'd ever done. "We both have a day off, we have to take advantage of this," she said firmly, thinking about how busy they both usually got. She was worried they might end up not having enough time to see each other. Now that would truly be a tragedy.

    --

"I don't care, at least it'll be dead!" Brayden shouted, even though he knew Callie couldn't hear him. The strangling combined with Callie's sudden appearance must've startled the ghost, because seconds later, Brayden found himself lying on the mattress, clutching his throat and gasping for air. He immediately sat up, taking deep breaths, wiping the tears away from his eyes. Callie was right beside him, he could feel her, smell her perfume. This was real. "Callie...it's me, it's really me this time," he managed to say, looking up at her for a moment before he swept her into his arms, giving her a real kiss this time. It felt good to actually be able to hold her with his own two hands.

Oliver thought that it was a fair proposition. "Alright." He nodded his head, believing that today was going to be good. Maybe it was a good thing to get off of work every now and then. "What is there to do in the city?" He questioned since he had never been around before. He had just assumed that this city was like the previous one he had been in.

    --

After about a few moments, Brayden eventually stopped struggling and was completely still on the mattress. Callie had only reached him when it happened, startled by his still body. "N-No.." She trailed off, believing that he was dead. Just as soon as she had lost hope, Brayden sat up taking a the breath of life. Callie was relieved to find that he was alright, partially collapsing over his body. "Oh, thank God." She mumbled to herself. Then, she heard his voice calling out to her. Looking up at him, she could see the warmth that had been lost from his eyes restored. It was truly him. Callie wrapped her arms around his neck to draw him closer, hanging onto him for life. "I thought I had lost you." She admitted, whispering against his lips.

Emily smiled, satisfied when Oliver gave into her and her wishes. She knew he'd see it her way eventually. Emily stood up, taking both of his hands in her small ones. "That's why we go explore," she explained, a smile spreading across her lips. "I'm sure we can find something cool. It's the city, people come here to get away from everywhere else."

Brayden clutched Callie close to him, hugging her as tightly as he could. He didn't want to be away from her, ever. He couldn't handle it. "Never," he said firmly, "you'll never lose me." He felt sick as he whispered. "She wants to take your body. Oh god, it was horrible, she killed that woman at the burger joint, shoved her in a dumpster. And we went..we went back to the mental hospital, in the basement." He swallowed hard, looking up at her. "Her body is down there."

Oliver had never aimlessly wandered around before, and it would be his first experience exploring in this sense. Slowly standing to meet her, he nodded to accept the proposal. "I supposed that you should lead the way." Since it had been her idea, it would only make sense for her to lead it. Oliver followed shortly behind her, making sure that her apartment was locked before leaving. "Do you have a favorite spot in town?" He questioned since his favorite spot was already clear.

    --

Callie could have sworn that Brayden was hugging her hard enough to knock the wind out of her. At this point in time, she was too filled with relief to even care though. She buried her face into the crook of his neck, refusing to move. "W-Why would she want my body? There are a ton of women in this town, and she wants mine?" Callie could not understand it. There were dozens of beautiful women around, but she wanted her. The next part of the confession made her freeze, realizing why he had gone missing. "Oh, that poor women. What if the cops find the body and pin it on you?" The panic started to arise again at the idea of him going to prison because of the vengeful ghost. Slowly, she moved back to look down into his blue eyes, seeing the distraught. Callie cupped his cheek, slowly running her thumb across his skin. "That's horrible, and I am sure not a pretty sight. At least the bright side is, is that you're back in your body with me."

Emily smiled enthusiastically as he went along with her, wandering the streets of New Shire together like a couple of tourists. "We could always go to the entertainment district, they usually have a show or two playing," she mused, walking along the sidewalk beside him. "Well, I do have one special place I'd like to share with you. It's gonna be a surprise." It reminded her of how he had described her and it made her smile. Emily led him through the large park, passing trees and benches, until she got to the botanical gardens. The cherry blossoms were in full bloom and falling around them, covering the ground in soft petals. It was a secluded place with a pond under a stone bridge and several benches around. "It might not be a garden of roses, but it's something," Emily told him, a smile on her lips.

    --

Brayden found relief and comfort when Callie succumbed to his tight, warm embrace, relishing in the fact that he could finally touch her again. None of it quite seemed real to him and he felt certain that at any second she was going to be ripped away from him again. He couldn't let that happen. "I don't know why she wants you, I guess she just made a connection with you," Brayden said with a sigh. "I just don't know how I can get rid of her. She's too quick to kill in a physical form." He'd learnt that from trying to strangle her; she was much too quick for human hands. "I don't know. The cops are the least of my worries at this point. This woman could be anywhere, waiting, ready to strike. She makes the cops look like child's play." He was brought out of his despair when Callie talked to him and it made him smile, nodding in agreement. They were here together, unsure of how much longer they had with each other. "I'm here with you," he repeated, pulling her in to another kiss.

"That sounds lovely. I suggest that we buy tickets after we are tired then. It will a nice way to relax." He offered while his eyes automatically darted around towards the people surrounding them. Even outside of work, Oliver could not lower his guard down. Following beside Emily, he was soon hit with the smell of flowers and reminded himself that this was his day off. The tension in his shoulder slowly dissipated, calming his nerves. He took the moment to take in his surroundings. The vibrant, beautiful colors of the flowers combined with the sounds of birds chirped in the background. The botanical gardens were designed to relax a person, which Oliver was starting to feel. It was as if they had been transported to a different world away from the hustle of the city. "It is beautiful here, Emily. Although, I do much prefer the scent of roses." He admitted, turning to face her with a smile.

    --

In the back of her mind, Callie feared that he would be possessed once more. That their time together would only be temporary. "Of course, I would be the one to make a connection with a crazy lunatic." She pitifully laughed, shaking her heard slightly. Callie had noted that the ghost had only possessed her for a short time. Maybe her strong will had connected with her. "We'll get her." She vowed. Although, she was unsure of how to end this once and for all either. As a ghost, the lady was practically unreachable to the real world. She was an invisible entity, and Callie was unsure if she was watching them right now or silently planning to kill another person. Running her fingertips gently over his neck, she could see the purple bruises forming of where his hands had been. "I can't believe that you almost killed yourself.. What would I have done without you?" She quietly mumbled. Leaning down slightly, Callie met his gentle kiss and moved her hands to tangle in between his soft hair. She trailed her kisses down his hard jawline towards his neck, hoping to soothe the pain.

"Roses are my favorite flower," Emily admitted as she walked closer to the pond, picking up a small pebble and skipping it across the water. Scarce for a pair of ducks floating in the water and a frog resting on a lilypad, they were the only two in the garden. "But I like to come here to relax and think about things. Usually it helps me clear my head." Emily had found the place accidentally once and fallen in love with it ever since. She gently tugged a cherry blossom out of one of the trees, giving it a small sniff before she put it in her hair, tucking it behind her ear. He had shared a place with her and now she was sharing a place with him. He was the only other person she'd ever come here with, and she felt like he would be able to appreciate it.

    --

"We should have never gone to that place," he muttered, his hand resting against his temple, as he thought about all the bad feelings he'd got from the second he stepped foot on the ground at the mental hospital. Practically everything about it screamed, 'stay away!' but of course he hadn't listened. When Callie's fingertips brushed over his neck, he initially winced before he relaxed to her touch. He knew he would be bruising up there soon. His throat still felt scratchy from the experience. "I had to at least try, I wanted it out of me," he started, until he heard her sweet words. "I'm sorry babe, I wasn't thinking. I just didn't want her to try and hurt you or anyone else." He wrapped his arms around her slender waist, pulling her down on top of him as they shared tender kisses. He closed his eyes, relaxing as she kissed down his jawline, his breathing slightly heavier as she kissed along his neck, his fingers running through her soft silky hair. It felt good, being able to touch each other, and even though he had bruises to show for it, it was worth the pain.

Oliver watched the rocks skimmed across the water for five jumps until it fell flat, sinking to the bottom of the pond. There was an undeniable serenity in the air as the sparrows flew over their head to land on the blossom tree. He could picture Emily sitting near the pond with a book in her hand away from the world. "I can see why this is your little hideaway. It's lovely. It is a shame that many people do not know of its existence, but maybe that attributes to its atmosphere." He reached out to readjust the flower in her hair, slightly skimming her cheek in the process. It had been slightly crooked, but, with a little tweak, it turned upright. "Better." He stated, guiding her over towards the sole bench. Taking a place underneath the blossom tree, Oliver looked up to admire the scenery as a petal floated down to land upon his nose.

    --

Callie knew that she was responsible for the whole mess, but she would be the one to clean it up. The online forum had gotten the best of her, and the phrase 'curiosity killed the cat' could not be more prevalent than in this situation. "Sorry." She quickly apologized, seeing the sudden jolt of pain cross his expression. He was too caught up being the chivalrous, selfless one as per usual, but that was just one of the many reasons why she fell in love with him. "Just don't do it again, okay? If you're gone, you are basically killing me, too." She slowly let it slip from her mind, wanting to focus on the now. All she could be grateful for was that Brayden had reclaimed his body, and they were safe..for now. Callie moved onto the bed, straddling his waist, unable to have enough of his sweet kisses. Her hands snaked down to his chest, slowly undoing the buttons of his flannel shirt. She continued her trail of kisses down his body one button at a time.

"You're the first person I brought here," she admitted, her eyes moving from the animals in the pond and back onto his face. "Rarely anyone comes here, but I've taken to coming at least once a week. It's too beautiful to stay away from." Emily grew still as he fixed her flower, smiling when he adjusted it, her green eyes looking up into his before she allowed him to guide her to the bench. She sat beside him, pulling down the hem of her simple dress, looking around at the beauty of nature around them before she glanced at him, giggling when a petal landed on his nose. She leaned over, closing her eyes as she lightly blew cool air against the bridge of his nose, making the petal continue its path down onto his lap.

    --

"I know, I know. I won't, I promise. We'll get through this together," he assured her, taking her hands in his and kissing them, and he meant it. Being away from her had been torturous and he couldn't imagine an existence in which he didn't have her. When Callie straddled his waist, he wrapped his arms around her, his fingers sliding up her back, underneath her shirt. He couldn't stop thinking about how something could go wrong or how they needed to have a battle plan ready, but as her lips moved against his skin and her nimble fingers slid down his body, he forced it all out of his mind. He took a short moment to pull her shirt off before pulling her back down against him, skin touching skin, relishing in her touch. For now he had to have her, to at least celebrate this small win.

Oliver's eyes flickered over to her in surprise of this truth. It made the experience feel all the more unique for him. "I am flattered." He smiled, allowing his surroundings to subdue his initial nerves. Everything about the botanical garden proved it to be a hidden sanctuary. "Ah, I see, keeping the secret mostly to yourself. I do not blame you though." Oliver responded, knowing he would have done the same. He could understand that there were times when a person wanted to be away from others. Personal time to reflect on matters. He blinked for a moment as the petal tapped his nose to greet him, feeling a chuckle bubbling in his throat. "Thank you." He released the chuckle while the petal softly floated onto his lap. Picking it up into the palm of his hands, Oliver studied its pink, soft nature.

    --

Even if just for this moment together, she only wished to push all the recent events out of her mind. To be in a small world together where the ghost never existed or where they had never lost each other. It was a risk to place a pause on life, but Callie craved and needed it. She stopped her escapade for a moment to raise her arms over her head, allowing Brayden to slide her shirt off. Her lips soon met his skin once more, skimming down his chest and further. Finally unbuttoning the last one, she pushed the delicate fabric off to the sides of his body with a soft sigh, revealing his sculpted chest. Callie sat up and paused for a minute to run her fingers gently over the rest of his chest and stomach, hoping that there were no hidden bruises. "Good." She murmured when she discovered that there were no lesions.

When he smiled it made Emily smile too, knowing that he understood where she was coming from. He was so easy to talk to; he always understood her without her having to fumble over her words with an explanation. "Well, it was too beautiful to keep all to myself," she teased, smiling as she glanced at him before looking out at the pond, watching the ducks swim around each other. "Oh, I think that was a good look for you," she joked when she sat back, watching the cherry blossom land in his lap. She rather enjoyed the look of the cherry blossom trees; white petals tinged with pink falling all around them. It was quite ethereal. She held out her hand, capturing a couple of fallen petals in her hand, her green eyes sparkling with delight as she let them rest in her lap, the soft floral scent lingering on her hands.

    --

Brayden gave up his previous qualms, letting his inhibitions lower as he gave into her and his need to be with her. His hands traveled up and down the soft skin of her back, reaching the strap of her bra and undoing it as quickly as he could, sliding it off and tossing it aside. He didn't want anything in between them, now that he could truly feel her. His fingers explored over her shoulder and collarbones, until she pushed his shirt off of his own shoulders, wiggling around a bit so it could come off completely. He looked up at her, a soft smile on his face her fingers roamed around his chest and stomach, finding her tender touch to be more relaxing than anything else. "I'm okay," he assured her, his eyes running over hers before he pulled her down, pressing more kisses to her mouth. "Trust me," he whispered, before closing the gap between them once more.

Seeing the smile on her face warmed his heart, knowing that she was enjoying herself. "I am elated that you would share this with me." Oliver moved his attention back at the bond where the ducks floated around each other. Although, it was sudden when one duck decided to attack the other, pecking at its feathers. It was amusing to him, letting the smile grow. "Oh, really? I suppose the fashion now-a-days is all crazy though." Picking up the petal, he placed it back onto his nose for a moment then blew it off once more, landing in his lap. "How about you, Emily?" He questioned, reaching over to place one on top of her nose. She looked adorable as the pink complimented her green eyes. "I believe that it fits you more so than I." He stated with a small grin. Soon, many petals had gathered onto his lap for them to view.

    --

As his fingers skimmed over her back, Callie's breathing became heavier as she relished in the moment. The warmth of his body reached out to her, calming the tension in her shoulders. After the quick removal of her bra, she soon felt the skin on skin contact. Her soft skin brushing up against his body every time either of them moved. A small giggle came out as Brayden wiggled beneath her, helping to pull his shirt off completely. Callie disposed of it, and it fell off of the bed onto the floor beside her clothes. After completing her inspection of his chest and stomach, her eyes locked with his to meet his soft smile, letting it warm her body. "Okay." She whispered back against his lips as she let their lips collide once more. Callie pulled away for a moment, moving to reach the button of his jeans. She fumbled for a moment a little too hasty before undoing them and zipping it down.

"Don't mention it, it's not a big deal," Emily insisted, a pink filling her cheeks as he spoke before she followed his eyes to the ducks in the pond. They were fighting with each other now and it almost looked comical, the two going back and forth. Emily diverted her eyes when Oliver spoke, laughing when he put the petal back on his nose. "I think you look quite nice like that," Emily teased, before he put a petal on her nose. She figured she looked absolutely ridiculous with the petals on her nose, but she kept them there anyways. A steady bushel of cherry blossoms had formed in their laps and she picked up some of them, tossing them in the air, laughing as they landed all around them.

    --

Brayden's eyes ran over Callie's body quickly, drinking in the sight of her hovering over him, taking in her warmth. It felt good, having her lithe fingers travel over his skin, warming it to the touch. He pulled her down against him, chest to chest, kissing her mouth slowly, hungrily. When they pulled apart, he allowed her to undo the buttons on his jeans, helping her to take them off. He fumbled with her own jeans, tugging them impatiently down her legs, mumbling about how they were too tight. His fingers traveled up and down her thighs, pulling her close to him, leaning up to kiss over her chest, sucking on patches of her sensitive skin, as if he'd never taste her again. Which, in a situation like this, who knew if they would or not.

He could hear the ducks continuing to bicker in the background, hearing elaborate quaking in the background. "Those two ducks must be having just as great of a time as we are." Oliver chuckled, glancing back to see them playing around. The water was splashing everywhere as the two battled it out. "Really?" He smiled as he turned back to her, knowing that the joke was only evolving. A light breeze then blew, knocking over the petals that had formed on her nose. "Oh, that was a shame." Oliver stated while the petals lightly scattered to the ground. Luckily, they still kept the ones on their laps. Watching as she tossed them into the air, he shortly joined afterward as they fell onto their hair and clothes.

    --

After a moment of struggle, attempting to tug off his pants, they started to work on her own pants. She laughed as he complained about how her skinny jeans were too tight. Luckily, they managed to finally pull them off to join the rest of the discarded clothes as the pile continued to grow. She placed her palms flat against his chest, feeling the steady beating of his heart. It was a rhythm that she was dear to her heart, lulling her to sleep almost every night. Callie moved back to hover over Brayden, shivering as he trailed his fingers over her thighs. A soft moan escaped from her lips as he captured her chest in his mouth, gripping the sheets of the bed.

"They're so cute," Emily said as she watched the duck, giggling as they hit each other before one of the ducks swam away, the other quickly following after it. "I wish I knew what they were saying, that one duck seems really upset." Emily turned to him, nodding enthusiastically as she added playfully, "oh yeah, you look like a million bucks." When the petals floated off her nose, she watched them scatter on the ground, "You know, in Japan, when people die, their families bury them with cherry blossom seeds, supposedly so their souls will be joined with the tree." She glanced at the cherry blossom tree right above them, reaching out to brush her fingers along its trunk. "I don't know if that's true, but I'd like to think that, that works. That the people we love could still turn into something beautiful, even in death." She looked thoughtfully at the petals falling slowly to the ground from being tossed, leaning over so her head rested on his shoulder, a smile on her lips as she held up a handful of petals.

    --

Brayden's hands traveled slowly from the smooth skin of her thighs to her bum, grabbing it and squeezing the soft flesh between his fingers. He smiled when he heard her moan, familiar with the sound. He never got tired of hearing his name spill from her lips, of feeling her chest move against his as she breathed, her heart thudding in her chest like the wings of a butterfly. He brushed her hair all to one side, exposing her neck, kissing up to it before sucking a hickey on her skin, one hand still caressing her behind, his other hand sliding down to grab onto hers, squeezing her smaller fingers between his. Holding her hand between his, he knew there was nowhere else in the world that he'd rather be than lying here with her in their crazy little reality.

"That would be interesting. Out of all my years, I have never come across someone who could talk to animals." He nodded his head. There were people who would claim to know what other animals were saying, but they were only imposters. "I do believe that one duck was yelling at the other to leave it alone, but the other duck was not willing to oblige." Oliver reasoned, considering their interaction with each other. "Ah, yes, I have heard of that once. About.. fifty years ago or so, I visited Japan on a business trip and learned all about the culture. The cherry blossoms there were quite beautiful as well, but I had no one to share them with." His eyes moved over towards her as she gently moved her fingers across the tree. "As long as you believe it works, that is all that matters. Everything comes from within here." Oliver gestured to the space where his heart was. Moving his arms gently around her shoulder, he swirled his fingers around the ends of her hair.

    --

She moaned louder as his hands moved to squeeze her behind, feeling her heart racing in her chest. She was aware of the smallest touches on her body, even his warm breath against her cheeks. Callie softly whispered his name as he marked the side of her neck, leaving a bright red spot in its wake. Squeezing his hand back, she leaned forward to passionately kiss him and let her tongue slip between his lips. Her hand moved into his boxers, grabbing a hold of him in her hand. She slowly started to move her hand up and down his length just the way she knew he liked it, hoping to drive him crazy. Callie progressed on by starting to move her hand faster to pick up the pace.

"Really? Perhaps they don't exist, or maybe they're just the world's best veternarian, who knows?" Emily laughed softly, thinking about how helpful that would be to ease an animal's pain. "Maybe the boy duck likes the girl duck but she doesn't like him back. He's trying to win her back, I think," Emily guessed, nodding towards the two ducks, now floating beside each other, seemingly having made up. Emily looked up to Oliver, impressed at his reveal. "That's amazing. The only places I've ever been to have been Seattle, and here. I always wanted to travel, see what the world has to offer me." She smiled when he gestured to his heart, letting her own fingertips brush over the space where it should be, pulling her legs under her as she made herself comfortable, nestled into his side. "I believe that all things beautiful are wild and free, so it'd only make sense for people to grow into trees and flowers. Their beauty stems from the inside."

    --

Brayden was caught up in her body. Callie clouded his senses and he felt like all he could breathe was her. There wasn't anyone else for him, she was it. She was his one. As their lips met, tongues eagerly intertwining, he dragged his fingers along her inner thighs, toying with her panties but not quite pulling them off. Once her hand grasped him, he groaned, throwing his head back in pleasure. "God, Callie," he muttered, arching into her touch, sliding his own fingers against her sex. His fingers touched her heat, caressing her before he dipped his own fingers inside of her, working two in her as he breathed heavily, the two of them a panting mess against each other. His other hand continued to slide up and down her behind, groping her, keeping her warm body against his as he succumbed to her pleasures, arching into her hand.

"Maybe, that would certainly make sense." He nodded his head thoughtfully at a veterinarian's secret super power. It would not be the first time that humans would keep secrets. "That story could work as well. A little lover's spat." Turning back to look over at the two ducks that had settled their fight. They floated beside each other happily without any complaints. Smiling down at Emily, he could imagine traveling the world with her. Paris, France. Or maybe even London, England. Oliver knew that she would especially love France. From the food to the scenery, it was exquisite. "When you have the chance, you should enjoy the world around you. You have one life to live." He pointed out. Feeling her fingers against his chest, he let out a small sigh. There was no heartbeat there, even if there was a heart. He gave a small nod at her belief, believing that it was an amazing idea.

    --

Callie shuddered at his fingers against her inner thighs, pulling away from the kiss with a gasp. There was a heat that was only intensifying with every motion and begged to be attended to. Practically drowning in his touch, she inhaled his scent and moaned as his fingers teased her sex. The thin cloth that separated her between him was starting to kill her. Callie arched her back slightly as his fingers slid right inside of her growing heat. She heavily panted, placing a hand against his chest to steady herself. All she could think about was Brayden. Being with him, living with him, spending the rest of her life with him. It hurt at the slight prospect of them being separated. Callie moved her hand away from his member, feeling that she was ready. "Ready?" She questioned him, heavily breathing already.
