Anita watched the clouds roll in over the setting sun. She was driving into miles and miles of land but now she was seeing free roaming cattle. Anita bit her lip and pressed her palm to her
skirt to remove the moister as her heeled foot pressed on the gas. Anita looked at her gas meter, half a tank. She would need to stop for gas at the next town.
Anita was on herway to a medical school in Phoenix, Arizona. Her parents wanted her to be a family doctor but she rather do petriatrucs. So she was driving across the US to give her time on her own before fall quarter started. She had a month to get there. All her things that she didn't really care about would be sent once she arived. Everything else was in her car and it wasn't much. It fit in her back seat and her cloths were in the trunk.
Anita drove straight into the pouring rain passing a little house as she started to enter a town... well what counted as a small town where the houses where miles apart. She flipped on her lights as she drove on her mind wondering off until something went wrong. The car choked and spat as it lost speed before it died. Anita managed to pull it off to the side and sat there shocked. She hit the wheel before hearing her moher's voice in the back of her mind. Anita looked at her phone. "Of course... no signal." She said and looked out into the rain, she knew the instant she stepped out of that car she would be drentched. She looked around for headlights but saw nohing. "Damn." She whispered only because no one was around. Anita got out of the car with her purse locking it and moving to the trunk. She pulled out her bag and closed the trunk realizing she locked her keys in the trunk wih her jacket still in the back packed nicely in a bag. Anita ran a hand through her wet hair refusing to give into the urge to kick the car. She started to walk down the road the only way that there might be someone around.
Anita walked a mile before stopping and taking off her heels feeling the blisters as she walked on the pavement. She was so ready to give up but instead she walked shoes and roller bag in hand. She walked wih her head up just to defy the rain. She saw the lights cast her shadow in front of her before she heard the roar of the truck. Anita looked over as the truck slowed next to her. A handsome but dirty man in a cowboy hat was leaning over yelling out the window.
Shawn pulled into the parking lot of the town bar. He ran a hand through his hair. It had been three years since he had been home. He had just rented a little cabin by the river where he could work with the cattle once he was sure the bar was running smoothly without him. He had only stopped at the cabin to change into something he had just bought. All he had to his name was a bank account, his old truck, and his army cloths. He had been lucky to find his cowboy hat in his truck. He was cleaned up now wearing cloths he hadn't seen since he left. Shawn put his hat on and got out of his truck and headed into the bar smirking at a bad singer at the karaoke. They had different musical elements every few nights. It was a good place to be everynight if you had nothing better to do.
Shawn walked up to the bar and sat down putting his hat on the counter beside him. "A budweiser please." He said to the pretty lady behind the bar. "And could you let Elli know that Shawn is here when you get a chance?" He asked and put a bill on the table to cover the beer and a nice tip too. Elli had been busy hiring people but she was keeping this place running smoothly. He was glad to see it. He heard a squeal and he put his beer down before turning on the stool looking at a
small blonde girl with bright blue eyes like jewels beaming. "Shawn!" She squealled and hugged him. Shawn laughed Elli was like a little sister even after he and his brother seemed to drift apart. She had written him every week for three years. He was greatful for her. "Hi Elli." He said as she pulled back. "When did you get back you big lug?" She hit his arm playfully.
Shawn felt his jaw tighten and he bit the inside of his cheek as he tried to relax his muscles. He wasn't entirley back from war. He wasn't use to touhing and it was to much. He shouldn't have come. He looked up at Elli with his
deep crystal blue eyes full of intensity. She must have noticed his tension because she stepped back. "I'm glad you're home. Have you talked to your mama yet?" She asked softly. Shawn relaxed and shook his head. "I am taking it slow." He said and watched her nod. "Come on I will show you the books and we can talk business." Shawn chugged his beer and put his hat on tipping it to the waitress who had served him his beer before following Elli to the back.
