Leah sat against the wall beside her front door with the rest of her family; her mother and father, her six year old little brother Ezra who was sitting in her lap and trying not to cry, and her older sister Nessa who was twenty and should have been getting married and moving away shortly, in other circumstances. There had been news earlier that day from her father's source that the Nazi's would be coming that night. This meant it was time for them to pack as little as they could and go into hiding. She had never met Dieter, but her parents called him der retter, so she figured he had to be a good guy. She silently cried, tears dripping down her face but letting no words escape her. And then there was a knock on the door. "What if it's them?" she whispered, and was quickly shushed by her father as he got up to get the door.

Kristof sat in full uniform with his morning paper, his feet propped up before him and his cup of morning tea on the small table at his side. Today was the day he was to get a new maid, a new Jewish girl. He tried to keep as many of the Jews for help as he could, because he knew if they were here they wouldn't be out dying in concentration camps. He knew what he was supposed to feel towards the Jews, they were destroying his country, he was sworn to eliminate them--but there was a part of him which despised that. So whenever it could be helped, he saved one from their horrible fate. It at least helped his conscious a bit, and made the nightmares a little less frequent. "Herr Schmidt, the new maid has arrived" his head maid said, keeping her eyes averted to the floor. "Well bring her in," he grumbled.

Dieter knew he was wrong, he knew it. Because if he was caught doing what he was about to do, he'd be locked in a concentration camp and forced to work for the rest of his life. If not out right killed. But he couldn't wrap his head around the idea that all of his problems were because of a group of people that his Führer said were the cause of their problems. He just couldn't. Unfortunately for him, he didn't have the chance to leave the country. So instead, he set about doing the best he could to save the Jews closest to him.

Racing through the streets, Dieter had come to the Abrams' residence. He knocked quietly and soon enough was greeted by Leah's father. He picked up the bags he could manage and quickly led them down to the waiting carriage - they would have to hide under the hay. Dieter was a farmer, after all. "Hurry now," he murmured, lifting each child out. And when it came to Leah, he offered her a light smile. "Come on now," he said, cupping his hands so she could climb into the carriage.
Ayala was scared, she didn't know where she was going nor did she know what was going to happen to her. She hadn't seen her sisters or mother in nearly six months, her hope had certainly dwindled away. When she was shoved into the back seat of a car and ordered to be silent, she nodded and hung her head. She counted the turns they took, until the came to a halt and she was pulled out by a harsh grip on her bicep. Hurrying after the soldier, she winced when she stumbled on the stairs and twisted her ankle. She limped the rest of the way until she was told to stand still. Still silent, it wasn't until an older woman motioned for her to follow that she did. Ayala swallowed as she entered the kitchen where a soldier was dressed, her body going rigid. Everything she knew, this couldn't be good. When Kristof made eye contact with her, she quickly looked back down, "I'm sorry, ser," she spoke quickly and quietly, only because she knew an apology may go gurther than nothing. Still, she didn't know why she was here so her mind was running a mile a minute.

Leah gasped and grabbed on to her sisters shirt as the door opened and revealed a Nazi. She looked up at her, hers eyes widened and held on tighter to Ezra. Nessa simply rolled her eyes, took Ezra from her hands, and pushed her to the door. "Dieter is a Nazi, saumensch," she whispered after her. Leah looked back at her sister once and shot her a glare, but she was too worried to do anything else. Her fear did lower a bit at the realization that the man was Dieter. Leah took in a sharp breath as the man offered her his hands to get into the carriage. From the view the streetlight shined on his face and she was able to see his face. He was absolutely breathtaking, with the blonde hair of the Nazi's softening his face, and the hazel green eyes filled with concern. She could tell she was going to like this man. "Danke Herr," she whispered, her voice caught somewhere in her throat. She grabbed his outstretched hand and allowed him to pull her in. She sat beside her mother and took part of the blanket they had found waiting for them at the back of the carriage. She knew this was going to be a long journey.

    xx

Kristof looked her over, a small smile spreading across his face. He tried to play the part he saw all the other officers play when he was around his servants. If anyone found out he had sympathizer leanings, he was done for. "You may leave us now," he said to his maid, nodding towards the door with his head. When he saw her leave and shut the door behind her, she turned back to the girl. He walked over to her, appraising her as he walked around her slowly, trying to look as if he were inspecting the merchandise. He leaned forward and took a strand of her brown hair, wrapping it around his finger before letting it fall back in place. He grunted a sound of approval and returned to standing in front of her. He watched her in silence for a couple moments. "Do you know why you're herekleines Mädchen?" he asked, raising an eyebrow at her.

Dieter knew they didn't have much time to waste so when Leah was in the seat enough, he was in his seat and snapping the reigns for the horses to move. By the time they were moving, Leah had just settled. A cold sweat had formed over his body, and he kept looking around in fear that they would be caught. The further they got though, the easier he moved. He glanced over with a light smile when they hit a bump and Leah let out a gasp, "You're going to be okay, kleine Dame," he murmured quiet enough that he was sure she would be the only one to hear him. He could only sympathise so much, he couldn't quite understand how she felt - or any of her family knowing they were hunted. "There's some apples in the back if any of you are hungry," he spoke quietly, motioning with his chin toward the small bag of apples that he had tucked away for the family.
Ayala's breathe caught when Kristof leaned forward and grabbed a strand of her hair, flinching away from his touch. The longer they stood there, the longer she came to the conclusion that she was there for his pleasure. It certainly wasn't something that she wanted to do but she doubted she had any choice in the matter. His presence was enough to have caught her tongue so when he spoke, she shook her head slightly. SHe was too petrified to speak, lest it turn into a jumbled mess and she didn't want to anger him in the least. She swallowed around the lump and bit into her bottom lip, her hands clutched behind her back to each other, so tight that her nails started to cut into her skin.

Leah hugged herself as the car moved, even with the blanket it was a little cold, and she had been in a constant state of hunger for a while now. As they hit a bump on the road she let out a loud gasp of surprise, normally it wouldn't have bothered her but she was more then a little on edge. Leah looked up suddenly as Dieter looked back at her, and returned his kind smile. She couldn't believe how kind he was being to her as well as her entire family. She nodded her head just enough for him to see, what not enough to disturb her mother beside her. A grin spread across her face at his offer of apples. Nothing sounded better to her at the moment. She immediately reached back and grabbed an apple for each member of her family. "Would like one as well, mein herr?" she asked sheepishly, grabbing one more apple to give to him.

    xx

Kristof watched her for a moment more, and then suddenly his face relaxed. She looked so nervous, she was shaking and it was painful to watch. He reached behind her back and gently took one of her hands into his own, giving it a soft squeeze. "You've been sent here as I'm in need of a new maid. As I go up in rank I find myself needing more help in order to keep my house in tact." He gave her hand another squeeze, running his finger softly over her knuckles and whispered. "No need to be afraid, mein süßer, nobody will hurt you here." And this was true, the last thing he wanted to do was cause this girl any more pain.

Apples were such a simple thing to him that offering up a few to the family he was helping was nothing to him but he knew for certain that it would be enough to brighten their day just a little bit. They were sweet and crunchy and everything right that they needed. "Nein," he murmured back to her with a shake of his head. He was far too focused on driving - he didn't want to be bothered with eating. When they got to their destination, he could then. Holding off for a bit wouldn't be the end of the world. "I will cook a meal when we arrive," he spoke louder this time, just after he heard Leah's stomach growl. It hadn't been until now that he realised just how skinny they were and it was enough to cause his heart to ache. Leah nor none of her family deserved it. He couldn't understand how others thought they did.

Ayala let out a gasp when Kristof reached behind her, her shoulders tensing in anticipation for what could be coming her way. She was fully expecting him to snap on her. She was expecting him to shove her down or... well, she didn't know because she wasn't particularly skilled in that area but his words caused confusion to stretch across her features. She looked up to him quickly, her mouth suddenly dry. "I-I don't... understand, mein herr," she spoke, her voice shaky and barely able to hold up to her words. she shook her head again, "I'll do as you please," she spoke just as quickly, not wanting him to think she was going to disobey him.

Leah turned to her parents and smiled. She already knew that she was going to like this man, he had already proven himself to be kind and giving. Her mother who was holding Ezra beamed with a smile as she bit into an apple. "Danke, Herr Schmidt, you are very kind," she said softly. Eating her apple Leah looked out the window as inconspicuously as possible. Her parents had told her this could very well be the last time she saw the outside world for a while, and she planned to take in as much of it as possible. She thought about how much she took going outside for granted, at this moment she loved all the seasons, even when it was at its coldest. She would do just about anything for one more day outside, relaxing with her friends, and talking about something petty like boys. It was funny how not long ago that seemed like the most important thing in her world.

    xx

Kristof slowly nodded at her words, "I know you've been through a lot, but do try and relax. The woman who walked you in will go over your different duties as soon as you leave this room. I'll give you a day to get settle in and tomorrow will be your first day. I'll call for you to see how it goes during the evening." He turned, walking back to his desk and retreating back into his cold exterior. "And Ayala. I'd rather you not mention to anyone any kindness I may show you in this room. If word got out I had any sympathy for your... kind..." he shook his head, clenching his hand into a tight fist. "Well, it wouldn't be very beneficial to my career." He sat down and picked up a book from his desk, opening it and pretending to read. He made a quick motion with his hand, gesturing to the door. "You may leave now," he said in a suddenly bored voice.

Dieter offered her another small smile but said nothing else. He was focused on the task at hand - getting to their destination without any issues coming out. He didn't want to fight with anyone, he was more of a peaceful person than perhaps he should be given their circumstances. He took a sharp left turn and glanced toward the family with a warm smile. "We're almost there. A warm meal will be waiting for you," he spoke quietly and confidently. It was another twenty minutes before Dieter was stopping the vehicle and he hopped out, quickly moving to the back to help with the few bags the family had. Always the gentleman. "Come on now. Fill your stomachs and sleep tight tonight," he called out to them, a gentle grin on his lips as he led the way inside.
Ayala stared something hard at her feet but she quickly nodded when Kristof spoke - she wasn't stupid. Whatever kindness came her way wasn't to be spoken of to anyone at all because if word of it got to the wrong person, she doubted she would be here much longer. SHe flinched as Kristof spoke toward the end - the unspoken threat of a curled fist enough to have fear curl in the pit of her stomach. "Danke," she spoke quietly when he dismissed her before quickly turning and rushing out of the room, not wanting to overstep any boundaries. Shutting the door behind her, she stood quietly - unsure of where she was expected to be so she figured it was better to wait for directions instead of getting in trouble.

Leah took in a deep breath of fresh air as she got out of the car, tears beginning to fall down her face, which she quickly brushed away. This felt so final, like she would never get to breathe fresh air of be outside again and she couldn't help but cry for everything she was losing because of how hateful some people were. She was embarrassed though, and didn't want anyone to see that she was crying. She followed the rest of he family into the house, knowing that after she had food in her stomach things would look less grim and she would be able to see how lucky she really was compared to a lot of people in her situation. They were led into the kitchen and she took a seat at the table, her eyes a little red but her tears had subsided as she distracted herself with the thought of food.

    xx

Kristoff breathed in a deep breath the second she had left the room and placed the book down on his desk again. He put his head in his hands and groaned, he hated being so mean, but he was left with few choices at this point. He decided to make phone calls, get his mind off of the girl and instead focus on what he should be thinking about. But he wasn't immune to how pretty she was, and that thought kept creeping into his head.

Yetta was rushing back over to see if the girl was out yet, she felt so much pity for her knowing how much she had been through and to end up here. "Süßes herz, you're out," she said, walking over and wrapping an arm around her shoulders, giving them a reassuring squeeze. "I'm Yetta and I'll be showing you around, there's no reason to be afraid here, the master of the house is a very kind and giving man," she spoke in a soft voice so no one would overhear. "He does everything he can to make out work here... comfortable," she finished, bringing her into the kitchen. She began to explain to her what chores and duties would be expected of her. "And every night you'll be expected to bring dinner to Herr Kristof in the dining room. Occasionally he'll have friends or business associates and in that case don't make eye contact, just bring food, clear dishes and be out of the room, verstehen?" This was very important and the one thing that would truly upset Kristof if not done correctly.

Dieter set about on the task he had given himself, the moment he stepped into his home. He was just a farmer, anyone who saw new people on his farm from a distance, he could just pass them off as help. He just hoped no one would report him because if they did, he wouldn't be able to dissuade anyone who came knocking for answers. He was quick with his knife, just planning on making a quick stew - it would take nearly an hour but once it finished, it would be plenty to fill everyone's stomachs. He had a feeling the family hadn't eaten well in a long time so he wanted to provide for them. "D'ya mind setting the table? Bowls are just up there," he motioned to a cabinet beside the kitchen sink, glancing back to Leah for a small, hopeful smile. He was trying to be friendly without putting her off - she seemed so nervous of everything, it just made him want to protect her that much more.
Ayala's gaze was down on the floor, she had learned that raising her eyes could very well result in a beating and that was the last thing that she wanted. Particularly since she was new here and didn't know what was and wasn't allowed. She tensed a bit when Yetta wrapped an arm around her, the touch unfamiliar to her but she followed quickly, nodding along to the older woman's words. She was listening carefully, and the last words were no surprise to her. She doubted any mistakes in front of company would go over well. "Verstehen," she answered quickly with a nod, in case Yetta hadn't heard her. Chewing on her lip for a moment, she risked a glance around the kitchen. It had been awhile since she cooked but she had been skillful, for once she was thankful of all the hours her mother had made her spend in the kitchen. Good meals would certainly keep Kristoff happy, she hoped anyway.
