All throughout history, there are stories of mermaids and the underwater world they lived in. They are magical, wonderful and beautiful. They live in a golden palace under the sea and they never have a worry in the world. Mermaids have always been pursued, but for varying reasons. Some long for the freedom that the ocean brings and others lust for the beauty and song of the mermaid.

They call the mermaids 'Lost Voices' for they travel the sea, singing songs to the ships of the world. They sit and watch the boats crash, the woods splintering against a rocky coast or they watch the men, so desperate to follow the sound, dive to their deaths. Haven't you heard the old stories? Oh yes, they are absolutely beautiful. They sing so beautifully, such a sweet serenade. You'll be full of their song, devoid of anything else. You'll be full of their song until even that is replaced by the water; the cold sting of death.

See, that's what a mermaid really is: a beautiful murderer.

Ceto closed her eyes, relaxing her head against the rocks of her private cove. The splashing and laughter of her followers was muted by seclusion of her cove. While usually Ceto wanted the comfort and reassurance of one of her followers, this was the rare occasion that she wanted the silence. She went over in her head her newest Inbetween. Mariana, a small petite thing from Brazil, with long black hair and even longer eyelashes. She would be one of the newest prizes and Ceto knew that she would excel once her transformation was complete.

The sea traffic seemed to be increasing every day and it would only be a matter of days before the next ship would sail by their little cove, their home. She couldn't help but let a soft smile, or perhaps it was a smirk, slide onto her face. Her mind had shifted so quickly from her newest baby to one of her oldest: Paola. That little angel amongst them all had held out for too long, she was taking too long. Ceto began wondering if she was just too weak to complete the transformation and she wondered how long she could keep her little pet before the others grew wary.

She sank down into the water, letting the familiar cold sting caress her body and bring relief to the spots growing warm and worn. She felt the water calm her nerves, calm her heart and bring her steady again, like the waves against the shore. She moved to the door, deciding that hiding out in her cove wouldn't suffice if there was a ship coming to them soon. She moved the rock, the sting of sunshine causing her red eyes to blink before she saw all her followers and smiled.

"Good morning, my lovelies," she cooed.
