Leave a Comment, Take a Comment

Let's try a new commenting function (one we can make sure is actually running and updating). The concept is simple, a small set of Mibbian stories are posted and linked to on the My Mibba page. Each story will stay up on the My Mibba page until it receives 'x' amount of comments (from the time it's posted). Once a story gets 'x' amounts of comments, it's replaced by the next story in line and so on and so forth.

    How It Works

    1. Mibbians who want to participate will post a link to their story in the sign-up thread (which will always be open and continuous).

    2. Following the order of when Mibbians signed up, I'll post their story to the My Mibba page rotation - listing about ten stories at a time.

    3. Periodically throughout the day, I'll check the stories to see how many new comments they've received. Once a story has 3* new comments (each of 100* w/c), that story will be removed and replaced by the next story in line.

    * It doesn't have to be 3 new comments, we can settle on a different number.
** It doesn't have to be 100 words, we can settle on a different limit.

    What Stories Are Allowed?

    - All stories of all ratings, genres, and types are allowed.

    - The story must have at least 1 chapter. (If it doesn't, you'll get skipped over.)
I was thinking we could do this on a trial basis for a couple of weeks and see how it goes.

    What do y'all think?

When you sit there tapping the captain America icon, why won't you open!!!! Lol

I'll join can I post an option? Like three different stories but used one at a time or just one story?

Sounds like a great idea to me. It'll help spotlight other users and their work, while still letting those participating get something in return. Definitely a win-win.

Love this idea! It'd be such a great way to help people get feedback.

I really love this idea, but I think there should also be a link/a set of rules outlining what constitutes as a decent comment, if that makes any sense? One of my major issues with the Comment Swap feature was that it became glaringly obvious that people weren't actually reading my stories: they were just commenting about the layout/summary or going on about what fandom it was written in, which doesn't help me improve my writing at all.

So there definitely needs to be clear guidelines/examples of what's an acceptable comment and what isn't XD

I absolutely love this idea. I would love to see this get up and running, but I agree with @ bellamy blake about the guidelines for comments. It's nice to hear that your layout looks good, but that has very little to do with the actual story.

Maybe when listing the 10 or so stories for commenting, you could also have a description as to what it is including the rating and what type of story it is. For example: story here: PG-13, fanfiction or something like that so the commenters can choose what type of story they want to read without having to click through all of them, you know? I don't know.

Oh, and what if someone wants all of their stories commented on? When listing the stories to be commented on, those repeat authors need some space between their stories especially if they sign up all their stories at the same time. Maybe they can only request one story at a time?

But I really like this idea. I like the options of having choices on what to comment on unlike the comment swap feature that we have right now where it only gives up one option.

If we do it, users will only be allowed to post one story at a time and that story will go up on the My Mibba page. So it needs to just be one story, rather than a few choices.

    * Once we start, I'll post a sign up thread (probably in the News and Updates forum), where users can sign up.

Probably we'll go with a very small set of basic guidelines (so that Mibbians won't feel like they're being overwhelmed with strict rules on commenting), but I'll be going through all the comments left and only the ones that are substantial will count towards the comment limit. So, for example, if a story gets 7 comments on the day it's posted up, but only 2 of those comments focus on the actual content of the story, it'll stay up until it gets a 3rd substantial comments.

I want to do it that way just so we don't discourage people from commenting because they feel like their comment might not be 'enough'.

But we can definitely link some articles/blog posts on good commenting habits, commenting advice, etc.

Since this is going to be on the My Mibba page, we won't be able to include a ton of extra text (like descriptions/info for each individual story), but the users' story covers will link directly to the story's info page (rather than the story's first chapter/long summary page). That way when users click it, they'll be able to get a sense of it before they start reading.

The way it'll work is, you can only sign up one story at a time. So you sign up once, with whatever story you want commented, and you can't sign up again (and go back into the rotation) until that story has been featured. So no one's name/story should ever be on the list more than once at a time.
    sebastian.angel:
Would you edit their posts to say "featured" so they know, if they don't check online every day?
^ This was a question Nicole asked me in another thread, but I want to post the answer here in case anyone else is wondering.

When a story is posted up, I'll leave the user a profile comment, to let them know, and delete their sign up post from the sign up thread.

Most likely, after May 25th - so next Tuesday. (I'm going away over the weekend so I wouldn't be able to update it if I started it sooner.)

I feel like the signup thread is very hard to follow. I like to come and check and see where my story is at in line, and half the time I can't find it, or it's jumbled about.

The best way to keep track of your post would be to bookmark it (or save your post link some other way). The 'address' of your post never changes, so once you do that, you'll always be taken directly to it.

I feel like the feature is becoming more of a 'Take a Comment' type of thing. It's usually the same 5-8 people commenting on the stories that are up. Maybe a rule could be set in place that before someone puts forth their story, they have to comment on one of the stories that are up?

I absolutely love this idea. It would get more people commenting on the stories that are on queue, so there won't be stories sitting on the list for a long time.
