Hayden took a deep breath, leaning against the counter in a rare break. The restaurant was packed tonight and they were short two waitresses, so Hayden and the others were working double time. She'd been helping out at the restaurant ever since she could remember, so even though she was the owner now, Hayden still liked to pitch in.

However, Hayden was a bit distracted tonight. Earlier today her father had told her that the old Baker couple had died, and in a small town like Glenwood, Georgia, a death affected everyone. It didn't help that this couple were the grandparents of Zacky Baker, one of Hayden's oldest friends. She hadn't seen him in years and she couldn't help but wonder if his grandparents' deaths would bring him back to town.
Matt cursed himself when he realized he'd missed his turn again. For such a small town, Matt sure was having a thousand issues finding the mechanic shop where he was supposed to start work today. He'd just recently finished trade school back in California and through a painful series of events, he found himself in the middle of nowhere in Georgia, working at some locally-owned garage.

Matt finally found the garage and hurried inside, sighing with relief when the air conditioning washed over him. He walked over to the front desk, where a brunette woman was sitting. Matt tapped on the desktop to get her attention. "Hi," he greeted. "I'm Matt Sanders, I'm looking for a Mr. Stevens? I'm the new mechanic."

Zacky sighed as he stepped from the house, the family lawyer following him from. He looked around the property noticing that it hadn't changed much. Though it was expected with his grandfather running the place. "Well I guess I'll see you at the services." The man's gruff voice cut through Zack's remembrances. Turning he nodded to the man before shaking his hand. He watched the man retreat into his car before he slowly made his way back into the house. Moving around the place it was almost as if he'd never left. Closing his eyes he could hear laughter ringing through hall way. His eyes flew open, he'd forgotten just how much he'd missed this place. And wondered if she'd still be around, or if he was just asking for trouble in seeking her out. They really hadn't parted on good terms, well they weren't aloud to see each other before he'd left. Shaking the thoughts from his head, he set off through the house, wondering just what he was going to do with this place.
Laney looked up from the book she was currently reading. Her eyes slowly traveled up the stranger in front of her. She remembered her father had said something about a new person starting today. Quickly reverting her attention to some paperwork, she grabbed it and handed it to him. "You'll need to fill these out before you can start." She informed him, they were basic information and his W2s. "If you need help just ask." She knew that most people could do these on their own but some people have never had to deal with W2s. Though she needed them to be able to pay him and take taxes from his check. Smiling she offered him a pen.

Hayden was usually pretty good at hiding her emotions, but when she kept expecting Zacky to walk through the front door of the restaurant at any minute it was hard to hide how on edge she was. Especially from people who knew her as well as the restaurant staff did. "You seem a little out of it tonight Hayden, are you alright?" her sister Leigh asked, bringing a tray of empty plates back to the kitchen.

"I'm fine, just thinking about what Dad said this morning," Hayden answered, brushing a hand through her hair. She noticed the look on Leigh's face, and it told her that her sister didn't entirely believe her explanation. "What?"

"It can't just be the Bakers," Leigh said. "You're thinking about Zack."
"Thanks," Matt said, returning her smile. He took the pen and papers from the girl behind the counter and took a seat in a nearby chair to fill them out. The basic information was pretty straight forward and so were the W2s, since he'd filled them out before. Once he was finished, Matt took the papers back to the girl. He wondered if she could tell that he wasn't from around here; if she didn't she'd certainly be able to tell from reading his papers.

"I'm Matt Sanders, by the way," he added, smiling at the girl. He figured it wouldn't hurt to introduce himself and be nice to this girl, since they would be working together and he was eager to make friends in this town. It didn't hurt that she was pretty. "Uh, how long have you been working here?"

Zacky hated that he was stuck in this town again, he just wanted to get back home. He missed the city life already, and he'd only been there for a few hours. Too tired from his trip he decided to just munch on something laying around. The thing about being around country folk they always brought you food when love ones died. So he was set on food for a couple of days. Though he really didn't see himself eating most of it. And since he was the only family that bothered to show most of it would go to waste. Yawning he pulled a plate of food from the microwave. Once he was finished here he was heading to bed. The drive had nearly killed him.
Laney smiled at Matt taking the paper work, setting it aside on the desk. She stood. "Laney." She offered, not to big on talking to the guys of the shop. She walked around the desk and towards the door. "Since birth." She added, knowing it was a lie but it put it in prospective she was the bosses daughter. Poking her head out the door, she yelled for one of the guys to come to the office. She was only good for office work, she wasn't much of a mechanic, but that didn't mean she couldn't get under the hood and tinker a bit. She had the knowledge just the lack of want. "Travis here will show you the ropes," she informed him. "Enjoy." She said almost as if dismissing him.

Hayden sighed. "It's just...I know he's back in town," she said. And why wouldn't he be? Before he disappeared without a trace or a goodbye, Zack had been living with his grandparents. Surely he would come back to bury them. That was one reason Hayden was unsure about attending the services. She knew she would see Zacky there and if she was being honest, she didn't really want to. Sure, they'd been best friends since they were kids, but he'd just left. "I don't want to see him," Hayden added a few minutes later, shaking her thoughts from her head.

"You'll change your mind," Leigh said. She picked up a plate that appeared in the window, ready to take it to the table. "You'll see him at the service tomorrow and you'll change your mind."
"Alright thanks," Matt said, following this Travis guy into the shop. Maybe the whole thing about southern people being nice was just a myth, because that girl didn't seem to be very friendly at all. But then again, he was a strange tattooed man who was obviously new to town. Matt followed Travis around as the guy showed him around the shop, pointing out where the tools were and where Matt would clock in and out. "So who's that girl in there at the desk?" Matt asked randomly.

"Laney? She's just the office girl," Travis answered. "But don't go getting any ideas, that's Mr. Stevens' daughter."

So she was the boss's daughter? Interesting. Matt honestly saw that as a bit of a challenge, but maybe he shouldn't. He'd just finished moving, he didn't want to have to move again because he decided to put the moves on the boss's daughter.

Zack laid in bed looking up at the ceiling. His childhood room looked just like it had when he left. And he knew his grandparents had missed him. But he just could never make it back here. It it hadn't been for the fact they left him money and a house. He'd wouldn't have even made it to the services. And he hated how his life had turned out. Living from pay check to pay check. The only thing good in his life was his mother had gotten clean. He didn't have to support her anymore. Though now she was married and off on a honeymoon. But when he called to tell her the news, she told him she was sorry for his loss. That was it. She hadn't felt the hurt, it was as if they died along time ago in her eyes. Though she did want the house and land, she didn't come out and say it, but she hinted that if they left her something in the will she'd just deal with it when she got home. But that was it, they must have felt the same way about her, because everything they owned now belonged to him. And for the first time he didn't feel like a big ass loser. But then again, what would he do with a ranch.
Laney sagged down into her office chair once the guys had left. Heaving out a sigh she started to nibble on her lip. Where the hell did he come from, she questioned herself. She would have been lying if she'd said that he wasn't good looking. Hazel eyes, dimples. And tattoos. Though she'd never seen a man like him before she felt quite bothered by his smiled, it made her feel weak in the knees. It was so hard for her to hold her composer while he was in here. And that was saying something, but he was by far the best looking thing that had graced this small town.

"Fat fucking chance," Hayden grumbled. "I think I'm gonna head out. Lock up for me?" Leigh nodded her head and then walked away, heading for the dining area. Hayden followed her, saying goodbye to a few of the customers as she left. She climbed into her truck and started the engine, the familiar sound somewhat calming her racing mind. On her way home Hayden passed by the old Baker place and she slowed down, noticing a light on upstairs. If she remembered correctly, that was Zacky's old room. So he really is back, Hayden thought bitterly, driving away. Even though a reunion with Zacky was not at the top of her list, Hayden was a little offended that Zacky was back in town and hasn't even tried to contact or find her.
Once Matt was laying underneath a car, he felt a little less out of place. He'd always loved working with his hands, which was one reason he'd come to Georgia. He figured people down here would appreciate a hard-working man who knew how to use his hands, something people in California weren't big on. He also thought it would be nice to settle down somewhere like this place, maybe get married and start a family. He'd just have to find a nice girl first.

Zacky sighed getting up, he was tired. But for some reason he couldn't manage to fall asleep. Stepping from his room he walked down the stairs, heading for the kitchen he grabbed himself a glass of water. Then moved out side. Sitting down on the porch swing, he sighed feeling the cool breeze of the air brushing over his face. A feeling of exhaustion washed over him, letting his eyes slip close he finally fell into a peaceful sleep.
Laney finished putting Matt's information into the computer. She was surprised that he had traveled all the way from California. Standing from her desk she grabbed her purse and keys. Exiting the office she locked it. "Alright boys, time to go home." She informed them. They were already running late tonight. But she never closed up on time. The guys were always griping that they didn't get over time and need the money. She nibbled on her lip as she watched them pick up the shop.

Hayden closed the restaurant the next day to attend the Bakers' service. She wouldn't be surprised if most of the town was there anyway, so there wasn't a reason to have the restaurant open. In a way, it was a perfect day for a funeral; the sky was overcast and thunder rumbled in the distance. The storm brewing only increased Hayden's nervousness. She arrived at the small church where the services were being held a little late and barely made it inside as the services began. She couldn't help but scan the crowd, looking for one particular familiar face.
After the shop was cleaned up, Matt went over to the small sink to clean up. He washed the grease from his face and hands before heading out of the shop. He made a face when his stomach started to grumble. Matt hadn't really had much of a lunch but he didn't have a lot of food at his new house yet, so he'd have to go out to eat. "Hey," he called out, seeing the girl from the front desk walking out the door. "You're from around here, where's a good place to get some dinner? I'm starving."

Zack had awoken on the swing as the sun broke over the horizon. Knowing he wouldn't be going back to sleep he decided to get ready for the day. Not that he wanted to deal with the services. He didn't want to hear over and over how sorry people was for his loss. The drive into town was short, and when he arrived there wasn't anybody there but the people setting up for it. "Can I help you?" A soft voice spoke out to him, turning he noticed a young man standing a bit away watching him closely. "Yeah, I'm Zack Baker." He informed him, knowing that the people handling the services would recognize his name, since he'd been phoning them. He hadn't been able to meet anyone until now. But he could tell from the change of attitude of the kid he was about to get a bunch of sympathy. Just ignoring the guy he moved towards the front of the church, placing himself down in the first row. He had no intention of greeting guest, so he'd be here until they were ushered to leave.
Laney rolled her eyes at Matt's greeting, they'd been introduced so he knew her name. Closing the shop door she locked it, before turning and looking at him. "Nothing is open." She told him, knowing all diners would be closed, most of the town shut down at 9 some at 10. Business isn't that good at those hours. She didn't want him to go hungry either. She'd laid out some dinner for her and her father, but he went hope sick so she wouldn't mind cooking for him. But she didn't know how to go about inviting him. "Uhm." She started before nibbling on her tongue. "You can come to my place for dinner."

"I almost thought you were going to miss it," Leigh said, meeting up with Hayden at the back of the church near the door. Hayden just shook her head. There was no way she'd miss this. She spent so much time at the Bakers' house with Zack when she was a kid they were practically her third set of grandparents. Hayden got up on her tiptoes, looking out over the group of people filing out of the church. Her breath hitched in her throat when she saw Zacky at the back of the crowd, heading towards the door.
Matt was surprised at Laney's offer. Southern people really were nice. It kinda sucked that this place didn't have a 24-hour place, like McDonald's or Taco Bell. But Matt wasn't complaining about dinner at a pretty girl's house. "Uh sure, that'd be great," Matt agreed. He followed Laney out into the parking lot, walking over to his car. "I'll just follow you to your house, I guess?"

Since they let family go first, him leaving the building wasn't a hassle. He was the only one there for them. All their family had passed or was his mother. Shaking his head he got into the limo they offered for family. Though he didn't need it, sitting down he felt a bit anxious. Sighing he needed a smoke, stepping from the car he grabbed his cigarettes from his jacket pocket, before taking one and lighting up.
Laney nodded at his offer of following her home. Before she moved to her car, her father had started rebuilding it when she was born. Getting in she started it up, before slowly pulling out. She didn't want to lose him on the way to her house.

Hayden drove alone to the burial, telling her sister she just needed a little time to herself. She was near the front of the line of cars, directly behind the limo that carried the family. She hadn't seen any more of the Bakers' family members, but almost the whole town was there, she could've missed them. By the time they arrived at the cemetery the storm had arrived as well, and Hayden dug her umbrella from the backseat of her truck before she climbed out.
"This is a nice house you've got here," Matt commented, walking behind Laney into the house. He noticed a set of men's boots near the door and other things to suggest that a man lived here and Matt frowned a little. But surely Laney wouldn't have invited him over if she had a boyfriend living here. "So...do you live alone?" he asked.

Zacky stepped from the limo and under and umbrella the staff had provided. He was great full, since he'd been in a hurry to leave this morning and forgot to grab an umbrella. Lighting up his interrupted cigarette, he walked along toward the grave site. Normally he wouldn't have bother. But now being the only member of the Baker family left to be here, he couldn't dishonor his grandparents in that way. Sitting down in one of the seat reserved he sighed, before putting out his cigarette and pocketing the butt. He didn't care if it was rude to the other people around him, he was stressed out as it was and having to be back here put a huge damper on him.
Laney moved through the house, towards the kitchen. "No." She answered his questioned, then forgetting that he didn't know she was a minor. "I live with my dad." She informed him. Before turning the oven on. She normally wouldn't bother with cooking a big meal but since she didn't know if her father had eaten she'd cook for all of them.

Since Hayden was one of the first people at the grave site, so she was able to catch a seat near the back. She didn't want to linger after the ceremony was over - cemeteries gave her the creeps - so sitting at the back would make it easy for her to get out quickly. Hayden felt someone sit down next to her and turned to see Leigh. "He's up at the front," she whispered, pointing up near the grave. Hayden followed her sister's finger and saw that she was pointing at Zacky. Even from far off, Hayden could tell that Zacky was uncomfortable, although she couldn't tell whether it was because his grandparents had died or because he was back in Glenwood.
Matt made a face when Laney said she lived with her father. For one thing, that meant he was going to be eating dinner with his boss. For another, it meant that Laney was a little younger than he thought. "Uh, how old are you?" he asked. She didn't look like she was that young, but obviously Matt wasn't a very good judge of age when it came to her.

Zacky sat in silences while the procedures took place, he couldn't help but wonder just who all these people were. He knew they would have remembered him, but he didn't and he hoped they didn't expect him to invite them back to his grandparents place. He wasn't planning on surrounding himself with people who wanted to reminisce. He just wanted to forget pieces of his past, and lead a life that didn't revolve around small town people.
Laney rolled her eyes, of course guys believed she was a lot older than she was. "Seventeen." She informed him, before placing some steaks onto the boiler of the over. She'd already started the prep for everything else so now she'd have to wait for the meat to cook. "How do you like your steak?" She questioned.

"You've got to talk to him," Leigh said. Hayden rolled her eyes. "Come on now, I know you've got some kinda grudge against him, but he's got nobody, Hayden. He needs a friend."

"Needs a swift kick in the gut is what he needs," Hayden mumbled. But she knew her sister was right. Before he'd just up and disappeared, Zack and Hayden bad been best friends, they'd told each other practically everything. "I'll see if I can catch him after the burial," Hayden said.
"Goddamn," Matt mumbled. She really was younger than he expected. Too young for him, since he was nearly twenty-five. Her dad would probably have his head on a platter. But Matt had never been one to scare too easily. "Medium well," he said, answering Laney's question. "You're a little bit younger than I expected, you know," he said randomly, taking a seat at the kitchen table.

Zacky watched as the preacher finished, and invited the friends and family to say their final goodbye. But he wasn't moving. He couldn't bring himself to want to say good bye. It was like if he said good bye to them he'd be saying good bye to that part of his life. And he wanted more than anything to be able to see them again.
Laney let out a soft chuckled, "I get that a lot." She informed him, "beside working instead of going to school confuses people." She told him, as she started setting the table with things they'd need. "It'll be ready in a few."

Once the burial was over, people quickly cleared up. The storm was looking to be quite a bad one and no one wanted to be out in it longer than necessary. But Zacky stayed in his seat. Leigh gave Hayden a nudge in that direction and she sighed. Her sister was right. If even she was still angry with him, Zacky needed someone. Very slowly, Hayden approached Zacky and took a seat next to him. "Hello Zack," she whispered.
"Smells nice," Matt said, glancing over at the stove. It was making his stomach growl. "So why are you working instead of going to school?" he asked next. "You're not old enough to have graduated yet. But then again, you can drop out when you're sixteen, can't you?"
