A Cup of Cheer

Davina walked up the stairs to her house with her arms full of shopping bags. She had been out doing some christmas shopping. Davina was glad that she actually was almost done with her Christmas shopping. She set her bags down, then she turned on the lights in her apartments. She sighed as she set her purse on the counter. She was suppose to meet Lucy for drinks tonight. Davina walked to her bathroom and fixed her make-up. She couldn't wait to see Lucy tonight.

Jarrod walked through the hospital, looking down at his clipboard. He had been super busy on this shift, but he was busy on every shift. He loved his job as a doctor, but sometimes it took a lot out of him. He work in the oncology department and he watched people die every day. Jarrod put his clipboard on the nurses desk then started down the hallway to get something to eat for lunch. He stopped when he saw a girl sitting in one of the rooms crying as she put her jacket on. Jarrod knocked on the door and looked at her. "Can i get you something?" He asked softly. He knew asking if everything was okay was the wrong idea.

Steven sighed softly to himself as he changed from his suit and tie and white lab coat into a pair of jeans and a button up flannel. He was a pediatrition, working with kids was a passion of his. He was supposed to meet his friend Jarrod another doctor, oncologist, for drinks later that night. He left the hospital and headed for home to take a short nap before the evening.

Lucy felt her heart shatter as her doctor walked out of the room leaving her to the news that she had cancer. She was in complete shock as tears rolled down her cheeks. As she heard a knock on the door she quickly began wiping her tears. "O-oh no, thank you." She said softly. "I-I was just leaving." She added as she looked at her metra app to see when the next train to her sisters apartment was.

Jarrod watched as she looked away, "Are you sure?" He asked as he stepped towards her. He could tell she was upset. "Um..here." He said as he pulled his business card out. "This is my card if you need anything give me a call. I'm actually one of the best doctors here." He explained. "Also i have a few numbers for counseling if you need someone besides me to talk to." He said. He stepped back from her, "I hope everything works out for you Lucy." He said, taking note of her name from the chart on the wall. He walked out and headed to the garage so he could head home. He got into his Mercedes and went to his apartment. He made sure to shower and get dressed because he had to meet Steven soon.

Jarrod walked into the small bar and looked around for his friend. He didn't see him yet so he went over to the bar and got himself a beer. HE sighed as he sat down then took a swig of his beer. It had been such a long day.

Davina walked into the bar with Lucy and smiled. "I'm so glad we are finally getting to drink a little." She said, laughing. She walked to the bar and got the bartenders attention. She got herself a drink and looked at Lucy, "What do you want Lu?" She asked her. Her sister had been acting a little weird all day and it worried her.

Steven went home and took a short nap. He then got up and showered, got dressed and ran out to his car. He was running a bit late but it would be fine. He walked into the bar and spotted Jarrod. He got himself a beer and sat with his friend. "Hey dude, sorry I'm a little late...One of those days..." He murmured.

Lucy didn't say anything to Davina about the cancer, she didn't want to upset her just yet, though she had already been feeling sick the past couple of weeks. "I'll just have a vodka and cranberry." She said softly and then paid for her drink. As they went over to a table she sighed, not really feeling like being out.

Jarrod looked over at Steven, "Hey, it's alright i understand." He said. He took a sip of his beer and looked around the bar. He was glad that he would be able to have a few days off around Christmas. He had been working so much this year and he really needed a break. "So how have you been?" He asked.

Davina sat down with Lucy, frowning at the other girl, "Okay what's wrong?" She asked. "You have been moping since you got to my apartment." She said. She glanced around and smiled when she saw a cute guy at the bar. "Hey look cute guys that should life your mood." She teased.

Steven tilted his head to the side, he noticed a couple of cute girls sitting across the bar. "I've been alright, ready to have a few days off soon." He said and smiled at the thought. "Just wish I had someone to spend the holidays with, ya know?"

Lucy bit her lip and then took a deep breath and smiled. "I guess I just miss being in a relationship." SHe said and smiled at the guys at the bar, until her smile fell when she saw the doctor.

Jarrod nodded, "Yea i know the feeling." He said. He looked over, smiling when he saw the girls. He stared at Lucy, "i know her." He said. He finished his beer and ordered another. "Go talk to them." He said. He actually felt like talking to some girls tonight. He hoped the one girl would want to talk to him.

Davina watched as Lucy smiled, "Lucy that is not how you get men." She said, laughing. She waved at the guy looking at her. Davina had always been flirty. Davina ran her fingers through her hair and then looked back at Lucy. "Come on Lucy have a little fun." She said.

Steven nodded and got up, heading over to where the girls were sitting. He pulled out his most charming smile and sat down with them. "Hey, I'm steve." He said and held out his hand. "Can I buy you a drink?"

Lucy took the oppertunity to go up to the bar and catch the doctor she had talked to earlier. She bit her lip and went over by him. "Hey...So listen...I haven't told her yet...It would be really cool if you didn't say anything..." She said and then waved the bar tender over and got herself another drink.

Jarrod stood up and looked over as Lucy walked up beside him. "I won't say anything." He said. He watched as she got a drink and then paid for her drink. "So how often do you come here?" He asked, changing the subject. He knew that he should give Steve some time to talk to the other girl.

Davina smiled as the man sat with her, "Hi Steve, i'm Davina." She said as she shook his hand. "Of course you can buy me a drink." She said, laughing softly. Davina looked at him, "So how come i havent seen you here before?" She asked him.

Lucy half expected him to tell her she shouldn't be drinking, but she was happy he didn't. "Well, not very often." She said and slid onto one of the bar stools. "I've only been 21 for a couple weeks." She added. "What about you?"

Steve took in a slight breath. "Well I don't get to go out all that much." He said with a small smile. "I'm a doctor, a pediatrition." He said with an even bigger smile.

Jarrod looked at her, "Well every once in awhile. I just work a lot." He said, shrugging. He finished his beer and got another one. The beers were going down so well. Jarrod looked at her, "So when are you going to tell her? She's your friend?" He asked. HE wasn't sure if it was her friend or what.

Davina smiled, "Oh wow that's amazing. What made you decide to do that?" She asked him as she took a sip of her drink. She was glad she had finally found a man who had a good job and didn't seem like a total douche bag. Davina bit her bottom lip lightly as she listened to him talk.

Lucy shifted awkwardly in the bar seat. "Well...She's my sister." She said and then looked up at him. "It's almost Christmas, I just don't want to ruin it for her..." She said and sighed. "It's only until after then..."

Steve light up like a Christmas tree when he talked about his job. "I don't know exactly, I just like kids, and I like helping them." He said with a laugh. "What about you? What do you do?"

Jarrod nodded, "i can understand that." He said. He felt bad for the girl getting sick at such a young age. "Did they tell you when they would start treatment?" He asked.

Davina smiled, "Oh i'm actually studying to be a biologist." She said. She was glad that she was almost done with school. She couldn't wait to get on with her life.
