Spencer stared down at the stick in her hands, waiting for the second line to appear. When it still hadn't after nearly ten minutes, she finally accepted that it wasn't going to. For a short second she vainly hoped that maybe the test was broken, but the first line told her it wasn't. With a ragged sigh, Spencer tossed the test into the trash, covering it with a bit of tissue so Zacky wouldn't see it. She'd have to tell him eventually, but it wouldn't hurt to let him think he was finally going to be a father for a little while.
The doctors couldn't tell Spencer why she was having problems getting pregnant, just that she had them. It made her feel like less of a woman, not able to do on purpose what most women went out of their way to avoid.
Matt slipped through the front door, kicking it closed since his hands were full of groceries. He went into the kitchen and sat them on the counter, looking around for his girlfriend, Faye. But he didn't see her anywhere. "Faye?" he called out. He walked over to the foot of the staircase. "You upstairs?"
Matt thought he heard something upstairs, so he headed that way. He first checked their bedroom but didn't find Faye inside. Next he went to the bathroom; the door was shut and when Matt pushed on it, he found it locked. He knocked on it. "Faye? Are you in here?"
