Talen Falk | Naive ✘ Empathetic ✘ Fickle
    Image

This was the second week in a row that howls had split the night air, closer to the walls than ever before. This was however, the first time that Talen hovered near the walls, bathed in darkness as the flickering of the torches high above her head had yet to illuminate her slender, pale figure. They started about a month after she turned eighteen, and there were never more than two wolves howling. The village was in a panic about it. She was dressed in tight breeches, and a loose tunic-like shirt. It was frowned upon as she was a woman, but breeches were easier to sneak around in than a dress. A simple gray cloak hung off her shoulders, the hood obscuring her sharp angular face as she listened to the howls which sounded almost... desperate tonight. Shivering as her breath clouded in front of her face, the visible fog forming in front of her mouth visible due only to the fact the clouds shifted revealing a watery beam of the moon.

For a moment silence, louder than the howling in it's own sense, the silence was louder than anything. Though soon enough they had resumed. A part of her, the part that was taught to fear and mistrust the men who could turn into beasts, was admittedly scared. It showed in the way her hands slightly trembled and her nose quivered in the frigid, winter air. There was a different part of Talen that was intrigued, wanted to be drawn close to these men and witness what they were for herself. There was something alluring in their shiny freedom she wanted to covet for herself. "Go." A voice in her head whispered, though... It was absurd. Absolutely. These walls were safe, all she had ever known- but something in those howls had awakened something in her. Something besides this odd draw to the creatures outside those walls. Technically the first... incident had been a few days after her eighteenth birthday. She'd been collecting eggs of the chickens when one pecked her. It wasn't anything to cry about, hardly broken the skin but it was enough to lightly bleed. Talen had pressed the minorly injured finger to her lip, and when she pulled it away it was as good as new. There had been an incident where she'd gone to throw out a spoiled bit of fruit, though it had become fresh again.

Then after that, the howling had started; and Talen had been positive that it had something to do with whatever was going on with her... incidents. She knew that there were rumors of witches, of healers; but Talen had never met one. She never met anyone beyond the dark-haired and dull-eyed people of the village. But back to the matter on hand- the wolves. She was certain their howling was no coincidence and Talen knew she had to know. There wasn't much in the way of this town for her. Her aunt had never been terribly close with her and the people in the village held nothing over her. Tonight with the thin bow strapped to her back she'd bought a few years back and a quiver of arrows- Talen was going past the walls. She had no idea if she'd make it back. Perhaps this was all some fool's quest and she'd be mauled and eaten as the village tales cautioned. But, there was only one way to find out. Exhaling loudly through her nose, the girl bravely marched towards the gate, her head held high with purpose. There were two guards at the gate, and they paused as she approached them. "Goin' somewhere Talen?" His voice was gruff, grizzled with age as the young woman gave a curt nod. "I'm going past the gates tonight Peter. For some hunting." She lied, while the two guards gave each other uneasy looks

"It's really not safe... Hear 'em? Louder tonight than before. They'll eat a little thing like you up." The younger of the guards, Feliks, cautioned. Narrowing her eyes, Talen scoffed tossing her hood back to reveal her aloof glare. "Even a rose has thorns. I'm of age now, I can go past the walls. This is not a request." The two men exchanged a glance though with a heavy sigh they moved aside, unlatching the door. "Fine, go. It's your funeral." Peter snapped, pushing the gates open to reveal the thick woods, and a narrow dirt path, sunken from years of use. Behind her the heavy doors slammed shut, the sound cracking sharply against the night. It was then a sense of reserve washed over her. Was it the right choice? "Already out here." As if to affirm her choice another round of howls split the air. The trek was easy enough, the wolves' voices were powerful and clear enough she easily followed them into the dark, twisting forest. Most life was asleep, the birds and bears- rats and squirrels alike. Every so often her cloak would snag on a bramble bush, though with a quick tug she was off again and heading towards the sounds of the wolves. Could they really turn into men? What was it like?

Did they retain sentience while shifted? Talen supposed she'd find out, and an ominous shiver ran up her spine. Her quest to find them took longer than she thought. Through unmarked parts of the forest, away from the river she normally spent days fishing or searching for herbs to use, and to the part her Aunt had always forbade her to go. Wolf territory. Eventually she drew close enough that it felt like the howls were ringing inside the young woman's head, bouncing off her bones and raising goosebumps on her arms. It had been about three miles into the woods, and suddenly she stopped- considering turning around. Would they truly eat her? "Go on." A voice pressed and tentavily she stepped forward, large bi-colored orbs wide trying to adjust to the looming darkness. The treeline thinned into a small clearing, and sure enough in the middle of the clearing were two men, one older, old enough to have silvering hair, and the other seemed just about her age. They were already looking her way as she broke into the clearing, the moon's rays falling down upon her. Two large canine shaped animals sat by each male, their howling abruptly stopping. The wolf-men. The older one radiated a sense of wisdom, while the younger one- he was a different story. There was a nagging sense of familiarity to these... these men, or wolves; she couldn't decide which was their more prominent side as of yet.

Power radiated from him, the kind you couldn't ignore even if you wanted to do so. And it terrified yet soothed her. She couldn't shake the feeling that these men were familiar on some level. That emptiness which had settled on her bones from the moment she knew what emptiness was; began to recede. Her wild gaze danced from one man to the other waiting for someone to say something anything. With the anticipation rising, the feeling that her life wasn't ever going to be the same, Talen spoke first- her voice a hesitant soft husk of it's normal vivacity. "Wh...Why am I here? Why do I feel as if I know you? I... I couldn't possibly." While she was speaking, Talen noted the two wolves who remained in their besital form begin to shift their weight, body subtly twitching and moving as if communicating with one another. Abruptly the largest wolf, it's fur dark and russet in color glanced up to the younger man, the man who's piercing gaze never left Talen's face, and it gave a human like nod before turning and disappearing into the woods; the other wolf hot on it's heels leaving Talen with the two men. Following their movements as they slipped into shadow, the girl nearly shivered as a gust of wind rushed throughout the clearing stirring a lock of her strawberry hair. It fell forward obscuring the sharp angles of her jaw; though she was quick to brush it away. "Who are you?" She asked again, taking another small step forward into the clearing.

Colton Tattersall | Stoic ✘ Amiable ✘ Impulsive

War had been raging on for as long as anyone could remember. But everyone knew that. Everyone knew someone this war had taken. There was not a life uncorrupted by the constant warfare that was going on. Even he himself, the next in line for throne had lost nearly everyone he had cared for. His father, brother's and sisters... Until he had only his mother and sister left. And the end of this conflict was not in sight. His advisers swore it would be over the moment the Merton royal line was extinguished. Slaughtered seemed to be the better fit in his eyes. And so all his life Colton Tattersall had searched for a solution. A way to end the fighting, tend to his people, without the obliteration of either royal bloodline. A way that he could reclaim his kingdom, mend the many wounds and hurt his people suffered from this historically long war. But over the years he had lost hope. As much as he wanted to think there was some way to garner peace between the Tattersall and the Merton family lines- there was just never a chance. The last time a Tattersall had met a Merton, a Tattersall had died in battle. It had been his younger brother, Jeremiah, who'd fallen to a Merton heir. That had been years ago however. Jeremiah may of been the last sibling to fall to a Merton- but he wasn't the last to die. No, that honor rested with his eldest brother Gregory.

In fact everything began with Greg's death. Colton had been there on the battlefield that day, he'd been holding his own and from the corner of his eye had seen his eldest brother run through with a broadsword. Colton had felt helpless, frozen as Gregory tumbled to the ground, blood oozing from the corner of his mouth while his stomach was a gaping hole. Colton had watched, numb and frozen as Khollagar lines retreated. All that was left was a stunning girl. She had long, gently tumbling locks of blonde hair, so light it appeared to be spun of the finest gold. She wasted no time in crouching, getting on her hands and knees to hold his dying brother's hand. He couldn't hear what she was saying, but there was certainly movement coming from those gently sloped lips. And whatever it was it seemed to calm Gregory. The tension that fled his body was evident as he too gripped her hand- and it occurred to Colton why this girl was so familiar. Elaina Merton, the princess. Next in line to ascend throne. As he watched his brother die, and this woman comfort him- Colton didn't really have an opinion on it. She was just another Merton. It wasn't until a few days later as his brother was being lowered into his grave on their family plot did he realize she could be the answer he was looking for all along. There had been a gentleness to her movements, and she clearly had a kind soul. There was the possibility of an alliance to stop the war there.

And since Greg had been slain, and he was now next in line; Colton convinced his mother to give the Merton's a chance. To meet with them. It took about two months, but the other royal family consented to meeting in their own place however. So, that's how he had found himself a week later sitting at a small table, the grooved wood sturdy and strong beneath him, listening to his mother and the Khollager queen exchanged pointed, barbed words at each other. This had been the second day of deliberations, and it was a huge step. Colton should of been pleased he had even gotten the two in the same room without one trying to slit the other's throat. After all it had been centuries the last time their two bloodlines tried to directly come up with a solution. And walking in he had high hopes. This could be the way his kingdom and his soul knew peace. However with each passing day he was growing more and more despaired. Deliberations were going nowhere. There was plenty of blame-passing and each side wanted more than the other was willing to give. They'd be lucky if they could prevent making this war worse. And during those deliberations was when he had come up with his second plan of action- his plan B. For he wasn't the only royal child there; Elaina had attended as well. She was normally preserved, quiet interjecting her opinion in a calm clear voice. Even from the other side of the table, she seemed like a level-headed woman. A good leader. A queen.

And his brain had begun to spitball ideas... Like what if he had a Merton queen? An alliance through marriage. It wasn't his first choice, but it was obvious by the fifth day of deliberations that nothing was going to get solved. There was too much hurt and bloodshed between the Khollager Queen, and the Elsekr Naga- their word for queen. Dead children, fathers, and husbands lay between them; while all Colton knew of Elaina was she was different... Different in a way he could sense was good but couldn't quite put his finger on. So for five days he sat on his plan B, his last hail Mary lest he inherit a throne embroiled in war. A throne that would take his life one day and his children as it had been doing. And on his last night, Colton decided to act. He had waited until after supper, when his mother fell asleep before sneaking out of the wing and with a few tips was pointed towards Elaina's chambers. This would either be his worst or best idea; and he hoped that this girl wanted peace as much as she seemed to. Because if she truly wanted this war to end- she'd do anything. Just as he would and even if that meant marrying a complete stranger. And she wouldn't just have to marry him, no; they would have to make it look convincing. As if they truly loved one another. Which would be difficult for the stoic prince. As he had approached her room, keeping his head low the prince knocked once. "Come in." The princess' sweet voice filtered through the heavy wood so he did as he was bade.

It was obvious the moment the door swung open, she didn't expect to see him there. In fact her jaw slackened a little and it was then he realized she was in her nightgown. Averting his gaze Colton drew upon a confidence he didn't feel. "We need to talk. Now." Hopefully she was too flabbergasted at the moment to tell him to leave. "You care deeply for people. That was evident when I saw you holding my brother's hand as he lay dying. That's what spurred me to initiate these deliberations; though they seem to be falling through." Lazily he paced a little further inside standing by her great fireplace watching the flames crackle. "I don't need to explain the price of this war. Someday it will likely kill me, you- any children or family we have. It's only a matter of time. Unless." Pausing drawing out the word Colton straightened his back. "Unless we do something. Waiting until you and I ascend throne would simply take too long. And I've given this some thought. So please, bear with me Princess." There was a note of apathetic politeness to his voice, though not much else. Shifting, lifting his hands up to his neck Colton removed a thick leather necklace, his ring, a testimony to his birth and position engraved on it. "Unless we act now. Marry me." He said turning around for the first time and holding her gaze, his face devoid of much emotion as he held the necklace out to her. He was never one for long, drawn out speeches. He had stated why he was there, and he wouldn't beat around the bush. She could take or leave his offer, and with the ball of nerves in his stomach- Colton didn't know which was worse.

    Nikolai Torbjorn | Wolf King
    Image

Eighteen years ago is when the war started between the Curaj and the Numar packs. Both staked claims over the same territory with neither party willing to relent, which only escalated the situation. All of the lost lives began to pile up to the point where the count of bodies was unbearable. The whole entire situation was merely just a bloodbath between both clans who were both too stubborn and prideful to cave in or come to an agreement. Brothers, sisters, mothers, and fathers were claimed by the war in a blink of an eye. This was a dispute that would be written down in history as the worst that both packs had ever seen. With a new found hatred for each other, both clans would never be the same again. This was the world that Nikolai Torbjorn was born into.

Nikolai was son of the pack's greatest, current alphas, Damien and Lorna Torbjorn. It was clear from his legacy that he would be deemed the next Wolf King from birth, already bearing a ton of responsibility on his shoulders. According to the elders, his destiny was to finally win the war and crush the Numar pack once and for all. Every single person looked up to him and relied on him to be their savior, which only added pressure to the young boy. It was already clear that both could no longer coexist from mutual hatred. Growing up, Nikolai was only presented with the finest that the pack could offer. He had private tutors, instructors, and anything else that would groom him to become the next alpha. There would be no excuse for him not to fulfill his duties. With his father's hair graying, Nikolai knew that his time to rule would be soon. Despite the pressure, Nikolai lived up to everyone's expectations and was more that they could ever ask for. He fought on the front lines of the war and aided his werewolves whenever he could. However, both packs were still evenly matched and there was no progress being made.

"Nikolai, I must speak with you," His father request one afternoon, pulling Nikolai away from the war table. Although confused as to why he was being distracted from his duties, he followed his father toward the study. "I have a task. You may take a couple of others with you but no more. I need you to find a young girl. She must be around your age and may look merely like a human, but she will become a powerful witch and an asset to us in the war," Damien went on before producing a piece of cloth from his pocket. It had a particular scent. "Track this scent down. It's the only remaining item we have of this girl but it's more than enough." Reaching out, Nikolai brought the cloth to his nose and took in a deep inhale. It smelled of fresh, ripe apples picked off of the trees mixed with the sweet smell of honey, reminding him of summer. It was a very distinct scent that Nikolai knew that he could easily find. "Good, you must find this girl. Don't be rash. Wait and convince her to come back to the pack," His father ordered, not wanting to start another conflict with the humans. "Of course, Father."

Traveling further eastward, Nikolai and one other pack mate spent a few days tracking down the scent before keying in on a human village with giant walls. It was a few miles from their headquarters. There was no way to scale them and guards were set up around the perimeter, ready to take on any attack. The smell of apples and honey was so prominent that Nikolai could almost taste the mixture in his mouth, but there was no way inside without forcing themselves in. Since he was in his wolf form, he jerked his head over in the direction of the village to which his pack mate merely nodded back. Remember, she has to come to us. You will not harm anyone. If anyone comes at us, we will run and come back tomorrow night. He ordered his ally, Jeremy. They were faster than the humans anyway. Together, they howled at the moon for the next few days in hopes of the human girl finding them. He knew that she would be drawn the sound or at least intrigued enough to seek them out eventually.

After being chased out the previous night, Nikolai and Jeremy returned once more to the humans' wall with a renewed determination. The moonlight washed over his chocolate brown fur and showcased the silky, smooth strands. His brown eyes pierced through the night and allowed him to easily maneuver through the darkness. It was a rather cold, seeing his hot breath dissipate into a small cloud of smoke, but his thick fur protected him from the chill. Twigs quietly snapped underneath his weight as they approached the wall, ready to begin their daily routine once more. Inhaling, Nikolai tasted the apples and honey once more and knew that the human girl was still here. Perhaps she would come out tonight. Once more, both wolves joined together to produce harmony that projected their voices into the night.

Both wolves continued their songs until they heard a crunch, making them pause. Casting a wary look, Nikolai stood his ground but let his eyes scan around for an escape route. As the sound continued to approach, the distinct smell grew to become more strong and more prominent. I think it's her Jeremy stated, glancing over in his direction. Nodding in return, he awaited for the female to emerge from behind one of the trees. Out of the corner of his eyes, he saw a figure move. He could hear her elevated heartbeat and the shivering of her body. Despite masking herself with a hood, a lock of strawberry blonde hair spilled from her clock paired with kind blue eyes. This is her. Nikolai agreed, unable to take his eyes away from her. Although she was facing two wolves, the girl didn't appear to be startled by their appearance neither screaming or running away. Giving a nod toward her, Nikolai turned on his heels before taking off in the direction back to the pack. He was sure not to move too fast, wanting the girl to track their prints and follow them. His partner followed behind not too far afterward.

Returning back to the pack, Nikolai shifted back into his human form and informed his father that they had accomplished their mission. It was only a matter of time before she found them. "Good, Nikolai, but I want you to finish this. Make sure that she learns of the war and agrees to help us. Do whatever you need to," His father stated before going back to deal with other matters. He returned back outside and settled down by the entrance to the village and awaited for her to come.
    Elaina Merton | The Princess

    Image

Elaina had already seen so much death during her time alive as the Princess to the Merton bloodline. There was never a time of happiness and peace that had existed between the Tattersalls and Mertons. The two countries always had something to dispute over and the mutual hatred between them was so immense that it would only end until one ceased to exist. The Mertons vowed to end the Tattersall bloodline once and for all, wanting them to disappear from history all together. Her advisors wanted to see the Tattersalls humiliated and ashamed of their very own existence, enough to the point where they would extinguish themselves. However, the war between the Northern lands of Khollagar and the Southern, fiercer lands of Elsekr seemed to only pick off heirs to the throne. She lost her father then only brother to the war. Although, the Tattersalls lost irreplaceable members as well. It seemed as though they were picking each other off one by one until both sides ran out of people. This was the furthest thing from what Elaina wanted though. All that she wished for was some sort of compromise or peace to rebuild these two nations. By working together, they would only prosper and grow as opposed to tearing each other apart.

After the loss of her brother, Elaina could no longer sit on the sidelines. She didn't even have a chance to say goodbye to him before he left that morning since she was stuck with her tutor all morning. The Mertons kingdom had a ceremony for his honor his valor and then appointed Elaina as the successor to the throne. And that was that. No more mourning as the focus shifted back toward the war. Her brother ceased to exist after a week as everyone else went about their business, but Elaina couldn't do that anymore. Just watching all of those innocent people die for this cause was unacceptable. She vowed to do anything to stop the war. It was unacceptable for a woman let alone the princess to step out onto the battlefield but that was exactly what she did with no one to stop her. Disguising herself with a black cloak, she ventured out onto the battlefield daily to aid soldiers and ease their pain in their last moments. At first, she merely went to Merton soldiers but that soon grew to the Tattersalls. Tattersall soldiers were men fighting for a cause as well, believing that they were changing the world. They felt the anguish and fear of death looming over them in the final moments. Most didn't know what the Merton princess looked like since Elaina stayed in the kingdom, which made her job easier. The soldiers merely thought that she was an angel guiding them toward the heavens in their last breaths.

One particular day Elaina moved over the battlefield, whispering words into soldiers' ears to comfort them. Most of them thanked her before passing on from their wounds and aches. Hiding behind a tree, she watched the battle scene unfold. The Tattersalls and her people were fighting against each other, hearing the clanking of swords hitting against each other. Men groaned while others screamed from losing a limb. This confrontation was more gruesome than she had seen in a while though. One by one, each soldier fell to the floor until the Mertons were deemed victorious. Her people moved onto to leave the remnants of the Tattersalls spread out among the battlefield. Moving out from behind the tree, she began to tend to each soldiers and did her usual routine of listening to their last words and sentiments. Elaina offered a smile and nodded her head before closing their eyes. Moving over toward the last soldies, she could tell that this one was different. He wore the royal crest over his chest and was muttering about what a failure he was. Elaina knelt down next to the man and pushed off his helmet to see the heir to the throne, Gregory Tattersall. Her eyes widened in surprised as reached into her pocket to try to stop the bleeding. However, Gregory knew that it was too late. "Thank you, Princess, but we both know," He mumbled, pushing her hands away. She gave a small nod in return before leaning down to whisper into his ear,"I promise you, Prince Tattersall. I will end this war. I don't know how yet, but I am going to do it. I will stop this warn even if it takes my last breath as well. Your sacrifice will not be in vain." Gregory seemed to calm underneath those words and produce a smile on his death bed. "Thank you," He whispered before exhaling for the last time. Reaching out, she closed his eyes and crossed his arms over his chest.

With her new found determination, she returned back to the castle and called for her mother and advisers. She convinced them to start thinking about peace talks to end the war once and for all. They stated that it was against their advice and bound to be an unfavorable decision with the public. However, she vowed to end this and that's what she would have. Her mother heeded her request and ordered the advisers to come into contact with the Tattersalls. It seemed that they had begun to think about peace talks as well, which was good sign for both parties. A few months later, they traveled to the Tattersall empire to start the talks. Elaina eloquently slid her opinions in and patiently waited for the opportunity to voice her ideals, but it didn't seem to help. Her mother was too hot headed and mourning over the death of the Merton Prince and the Merton King, whereas the Khollager Queen was heated over the recent loss of her son. Both women were too upset to think clearly and lashed out at each other, which made the negotiation even worse. After the fifth day of argument, Elaina retired to her room and started to pack her bags to return home. This wasn't going to work. Both kingdoms has completely drastic ideals for the future and neither side was willing to relent. It made her head throb and she finished getting ready for bed until there was a knock at the door. "Come in," She called out, waiting for the visitor to come in.

She figured that it was her mother coming to wish her a good night, but the Tattersall Prince walked in instead. She took in his strong jawline and piercing blue eyes, feeling completely exposed. Elaina was clearly surprised by the visit as her eyes widened while her jaw slacked, and she was clearly not ready, considering she was in her night gown. Embarrassed, she reached out to grab the shawl resting on the nearby chair and wrapped it around her shoulders and attempted to cover up as much of herself as possible. She cleared her throat and attempted to muster as much confidence as possible. "Yes, of course," Elaina agreed, turning to follow his movement toward the fire. She appeared to look dignified and respectable, despite what she was currently wearing. When Colton explained that he had seen her on the battlefield, she attempted to hide her shock. She tried to be as discrete as possible and thought that all of the men had left, but he lingered behind. If the prince saw her, she needed to be more careful in the future. Considering that he hadn't told anyone yet, she figured that he wasn't going to though. His next proposal took her the most off guard as she started at the outstretched ring. Marriage? That was quite a leap from the talks of compromise. Elaina wracked her brain to out weight the pros and cons of this arrangement while a ball of nerves formed in the pit of her stomach. Of course, the war would end after they both claimed the throne and their people would be alive. Although they weren't in love, marriage like this happened all the time between those of status, so she wasn't surprised. After a moment passed, she reached out her with her palm faced up to receive the ring. "Okay, I will marry you."

    (Hope this is okay!)

Talen Falk | Naive ✘ Empathetic ✘ Fickle
    Image

There was a crackling sense of wonderment in her marrow, so these were wolves. They were much larger and looked far more fearsome than the few hounds they had back in the village. She was equal parts awed and cowed by their appearance. The largest one, the dark rusted colored wolf watched her with a sentience that surprised her. Were they still men in this form? Could they think like this? She was definitely curious- about as curious to see if they knew what was going on with her. Why they were waiting for her, because why else would they have stayed there all this time? But her questions remained unanswered as the two wolves plunged away from her and into the treeline. Thankful she hadn't worn a dress- that would of only gotten snagged on the thorn branches that refused to die even in this snow and winter. Talen paused, unsure of what to do as she was once again left alone in the clearing, only illuminated by the moon. Shivering beneath her cloak, Talen considered just going back. Back to the life she knew. The place that had been home for the last eighteen years of her life. It would make sense, rather than just slipping out into the night.

To chase down creatures whom, she had no idea what they wanted from her. Whatever she chose to do it would have to be soon, as the cold was beginning to sting her skin more prominently. Taking a small step back, turning towards the direction she'd come Talen was about to just head back. This was all unknown for her, and it was unnerving as much as she didn't like to admit that. Turning her feet crunching against the snow she'd trampled Talen had taken two steps towards the village when she paused again. If nothing else she was an indecisive creature. If she went back to the village, what would become of her? What happened when whatever was happening, happened in front of someone? If they bore witness to one of the incidents? She'd be burned at the stake for being a witch. Driven out if she was lucky. Gnawing at her lip, shivering miserably in the wintery air the young woman knew, well a piece of her did, that she could not go back. Which left her the options of the wolves. "Gods protect me." She mumbled beneath her breath apprehensively turning around again, this time towards the way the wolves had disappeared.

Birds of a feather must flock together, must they not? Perhaps they could at least explain what was going on with her, what they wanted with her. Why she was displaying a inclination of magic. Her aunt had never said her mother or father possessed such skill, and the skill was far and few from what the villagers told her. What they would speak to her of magic. Because in the end, magic was not human and not being human was about the same as being a blood-lusting wolf to them. Clenching her jaw, her eyes narrowing in determination she continued her journey towards the deepest part of the woods she had yet to explore. She would of thought the trees would of been black, their trunks and branches twisted like a broken thing; but they were the same pine and oak as the rest of the forest. The deeper she pushed into the woods, bending down every so often to examine the paw-prints the wolves had left behind, she realized that the only thing different about the wolves so far was what they could become. There were a few times, the moon disappeared behind clouds, did she have trouble seeing. A couple times during those boughts of darkness Talen fell, but she was always quick to get back to her feet; throwing weary glances around.

Darkness and gloom pressed on her at all sides, and even the moon was having trouble piercing the thick canopy of pines to light her path the closer she unknowingly drew to the village. What she did know however, were paw prints were joined by a few others, and then more as if there were a whole pack around and that is when it occurred to the redhead; that's where she was being led. This sent a new round of worries, though she did her best to ignore it. Something in her very essence was demanding this where they be. Where they rightfully belonged. So she followed that. She followed and drew upon that certainty as she noted a few torch lights flickering a few yards ahead, and after breaking through another treeline she realized that, they had brought her to a village. The wolves had a village? They didn't live in caves? Well, she supposed that was a myth now debunked. Panting, breath exploding and clotting in a white cloud in front of Talen's face the svelte woman was aware of a figure standing in front of the gate. He held himself with a posture that spoke to power and importance, though she hardly had the time or want to look him over. Her cheeks were bright red, as were her hands. The girl's teeth clattered together from the cold as she drew closer.

What was she supposed to say to him? It was obvious she was being awaited, by the way he glanced up as she drew near, though again there was silence between the two. Perhaps he wasn't the talking type, and normally she was, except she was cold and wet and just wanted to know what was going on. "I-I'm not chasing you again." Talen informed cautiously, drawing her cloak tight around her shoulders, weariness in her voice. Romping through the snow and cold may be fine and dandy for these wolves; but not for Talen. As far as she or her body knew, she was a human girl. The snow it froze her, and she wasn't used to trekking around the dark woods. She'd never been allowed, it was too dangerous. Not even the bravest men of the village went in the forest after the sun fell. "Will you tell me what you want? Who you are? Why you're doing this?" She spoke again, in a quiet tone as if she wasn't sure that she should be speaking. But the curiosity was gnawing at her, and for a while longer she could ignore the cold so long as she got some answers from this stranger. By this time her hood had fallen away from her face, exposing her long wild mane of copper and strawberry locks, her sharp angular and lean face; and delicate looking nose. It also exposed just how confused she was of everything that was going on.

Colton Tattersall | Stoic ✘ Amiable ✘ Impulsive
    Image

Colton gave no indication of any emotion as the ring was placed in her palm and she agreed to marry him. Perhaps it was common practice for the royals of her court to preform marriages like this; but the Tatteralls and other royals married because of a real bond. Political couples often ended poorly and were looked down upon; so they had to be convincing. A loveless marriage wouldn't be accepted. In fact, they may not be accepted at any rate. This was a last resort measure on both their parts, and Colton knew better than to try to pretend otherwise with her. If nothing else Colton would always be honest with Elaina. That was the least he could do for the woman that would become his wife, as she had just consented. For a long time he said nothing, contemplating the way his world was about to change. What the chances of this working would be... "It's not going to be easy Elaina. Is alright if I call you Elaina? It may be a little more convincing to the public if I called you by your name, rather than princess. And in turn, please call me Colton. No formalities. No use for them now." Even though he was bidding her from refraining by using formalities with him, the prince was hardly anything other than stony... Apathetic.

"The people, they're going to have to believe it. What better way to triumph over hate than a love story? A fairy tale the others can look up to and follow suit." Colton murmured, more to himself than anything else. His aquatic eyes rested on her slender frame, meeting only her face to demonstrate his respect of her. "I cannot promise that this marriage will be everything you hoped for Elaina. But I can promise I will be respectful of you and your wishes." His voice was a silk tapestry weaving about the room with it's rich and soft timbre. Wordlessly he raised his left hand to his face, rubbing his chin thoughtfully. There was so much he wanted to say, wanted to do; but he couldn't give words to the thoughts in his mind as of yet. Colton knew very little of Elaina and that would have to change. He wanted to tell her what a heavy toll this was going to take on the both of them, to warn her that people were not going to like the fact that they were now betrothed to one another. But no one would dare try to stop him. She already wore his ring, his signet; and that was a promise clad in iron chains. She didn't know that even if he wanted to, Colton could not break off this marriage. Colton couldn't even promise her that the years they would spend together if everything went according to his plan, would be happy ones.

No, it was just too uncertain. Part of the reason the eldest and last Tattersall wasn't married was because it was too dangerous. He didn't want to find is wife only to have her murdered. It wouldn't be the first time a queen or princess was killed. His sister had been stabbed in the stomach, causing her to miscarry her fallen husband's child. She was lucky to be saved. What if that were to happen to Elaine? Would he be responsible for dragging her into such a chaotic world? "No matter what Elaina, we have remain a united front. Bring your mother to the gardens after dinner, please. I'll bring mine and we'll make our announcement then." Moving from his spot in front of the fire he approached the princess stopping only when they were inches away; and his Aegean depths entrapped her's. "We have to sell this. Remember that Love." He murmured, voice quiet enough to be the whispering of wind through branches. Abruptly the man turned, heading towards the door. "You and I will make things right between our peoples. I'll see you in the morning." Colton bade, his gaze still remaining somewhat distant. It was something he was going to have to work on if he wanted this marriage to work.

Turning from the room, closing the door gently behind him, Colton lingered for a moment noticing a servant passing by. Offering a small smile, hoping that gossip would spread to the common people, he headed back to his own room. A floor and a wing away. By the time he made it back to his room, and undressed, crawling beneath his covers; he wondered how many more times he'd sleep alone. His mind thought of all the ways this wedding could go. Of what their futures would hold, how long it would take to officially stop the war; and how others would accept this. If they would. That night, Colton didn't sleep. Instead he lay awake, wondering just how all of this was going to go. What he wouldn't give to be able to see the future. It wasn't until the sun began to creep into his window did the young prince fall into a light slumber. It as dreamless, but warm. He would of slept longer had it not been for his mother waking him, informing him of breakfast and to get to their dining quarter in ten. For the briefest of moments he forgot of his plans, until his conversation with Elaina came rushing back. The loss of weight against his neck was just a further proof that what happened last night was real. "I'll be down." He murmured, seemingly pleasing his mother. "Great." With that she was gone closing the door to his room.

He took awhile to dress, picking out some of his nicer clothes. He'd formally be meeting the Merton Queen as a mother-in-law today. And he wanted to impress as much as possible. Once his dirty blonde locks were carefully styled, Colton gave himself a once over in the large, pristine, silver mirror before turning to make his way downstairs. Breakfast was horrible. A heavy air which his mother picked up on right away. "You need not worry. This is the last day of deliberation and then they'll go back home. We can work on avenging your brother." This only sickened him further and Colton gave her a scathing look, though said nothing. His mother was wise enough not to press the matter. Finally, when their dishes were cleared away he stood up motioning to the courtyards filled with flowers, benches, and intricate fountains. "Shall we go for a walk? Gregory always did love it out there." Irene Tattersall nodded, her black hair beginning to gray bouncing with the movement. "Sure." She was no idiot. She could tell he was hiding something, and wanted to find out. So far everything was going according to plan as the prince made it to the courtyard, the summer's wind warm on his face. As if on cue Elaina and her mother appeared from a different set of doors, close enough he could call out to them. He didn't need to as Elaina's gaze fell on him, and the two headed towards each other. The adoring smile on her lips was so convincing that Colton nearly believed it himself.

As if he couldn't contain himself, Colton jogged the last few yards to her, stopping when his gaze fell on her mother. "Queen Merton." He greeted respectfully, waiting for his mother to catch up. "Mother. I- we have something to announce." He paused a little between his words, as if savoring each moment of this. Colton let his gaze rest on Elaina's face, and he noted the thick leather cord which held his ring still around her neck. "May I?" He asked, though he was already reaching out to pull the necklace up, pulling it over her head to showcase off. "Mother, Queen Merton. For a long time I have admired Elaina. I've admired her resilient soul. Her kindness and empathy... A soul that beautiful and vibrant is not a common occurrence. Upon spending so much time with her this week... I could not help but feel as if the other half of my soul was found." He broke off his speech, getting down on both his knees in front of the princess and gazing up on her, as if she was the only thing he ever saw. "Last night, I asked for Elaina's hand in marriage. To be my wife, my queen- my partner in all I endeavor. She consented, but I will ask again, as a formality so you can all bear witness. Elaina Merton, In this short time you have captured my heart, my attention. If you will let me, I would protect you from all the world. Any who would dare stand against you. Your enemies will become my enemies, and they will taste my blade. I humbly ask you once more, to become my wife."

    Nikolai Torbjorn | Wolf King

    Image

Nikolai patiently waited for their guest to finally find her destination, standing at the entrance to the village. Soon, the sun began to illuminate it rays across the horizon and painted the sky with hues of yellow and orange, signaling a new day. Another day of war for the two packs and it would continue unless he was able to do his job properly. Luckily, the Numar pack neither had the bravery nor the resources to strike this close to headquarters, so the girl was safe from them. He leaned against the wooden pillars that encompassed the entire village, protecting them against intruders. Nikolai could still feel that her presence was slowly getting closer, step by step. It was clear from her ragged breath that she was fatigued from the journey just as an human would be. However, most wouldn't have had the resilience that she possessed. After trekking in the snow, most humans would have given up and returned back home to the safety of shelter and the comfort of home. This one was different.

Once she emerged from the shadows, he kicked off of the post and crossed his arms over his chest as she closed the gap between them. It was clear that she was surprised to find their headquarters. Was it everything that the humans had taught her it was? Probably not. Did it completely shatter her expectations of them? Probably did. The standard myth was that they lived in caves and never left other than to kill for food. That was far from the truth. Werewolves were highly intellectual beings that functioned very close to the human hierarchy. In fact, they performed far above the standard human efficiency. It was something that werewolves took pride in and something that humans were threatened by. It was why humans made up numerous myths about them to ward off interactions.

He turned to knock against the wooden doors and heard the creak as the two swung open to reveal the inside of the village. Everyone was on high alert from the scent of a human. However, they wouldn't harm or approach her since she was with the company of the future alpha. "I will explain all of your questions, but you have to come inside. You're going to become hypothermic soon if we don't get you warm," He explained, ushering for her to come inside of their camp. As her hood dropped from her head, her facial features were finally exposed for Nikolai to take in. The sun bathed her skin, casting rays against her smooth, pale skin. Her wild hair cascaded down her back but somehow managed to frame her face, only enhancing her features. She was a beautiful human being whether or not she acknowledged it.

Taking her back to his quarters, he sat her down on one of the chairs in his room before requesting blankets and a fresh set of clothes from one of the servants. "My name is Nikolai," He introduced, tossing a couple logs inside of the fireplace before setting it aflame. "And what I want is your help," He simply phrased, taking the blankets and clothes from the servant when she returned. Walking over toward her, he unfolded the blanket and spread it across her shoulders. Nikolai set the fresh set of clothes down onto the table beside her before walking over toward the bookshelf. "My pack is currently at war with another one, and it has lasted eighteen years. We've both been taking causalities, and I need your help to stop it," He explained while pulling one of them off of the shelf. Taking steps toward her, he started to flip through the pages until he paused on one and placed it down onto the table. The page spoke of a female witch named Bianca Talk that aided the Curaj pack. She had to flee for safety before the war broke out. However, she promised that her daughter would aid their cause at the age of eighteen. "You see, your mother was actually a witch that helped us but had to return behind the human walls when the war broke out."

Nikolai took the seat across from her, feeling the familiar pull from this girl once again. It was this undeniable pull that made him want to protect her from any danger, which was odd since she was merely a witch. They had never met before either. In order to earn a werewolf's trust, it took years of loyalty and yet... "I know this is a lot to take in, and you have no reason to trust a werewolf. However, this is the truth," He added, settling his gaze on her face and awaited her reaction. It was easy to read the reactions from a human's face and physical reactions from the body.
    Elaina Merton | The Princess

    Image

As the ring dropped into the palm of her hand, she peered down at the gem in her hand and wrapped her fingers around it. It was a timeless symbol and an affirmation of their intent to marry. As soon as she put this around her neck, she was his and he was hers. Although she didn't know about the Tatterstalls, the Mertons married numerous times throughout her lineage for purely political reasons. However, it always appeared to be from the power of love to the public and the people seemed to thrive off of a love story, boosting the economy of the kingdom. It seemed that acting ran through the Merton bloodline. With his marriage, her kingdom would be astonished and completely shocked by their Princess' actions. It would be twice as hard to convince them that she would be marrying the Tatterstall prince out of love, considering how much hatred and bloodshed existing between their families. However, there was no other option.

"Yes, it would certainly be odd. Colton it is then," She nodded in resolution, placing the necklace over her head. Reaching underneath, she pulled out her wavy locks and allowed it to spill over her shoulders once more. The ring pressed heavily against her chest, reminding her of her promise to him. There was no turning back from this. On first instinct, she wanted to call him the prince and fall back into her usual formalities but she needed to remind herself that he was her husband-to-be. She was supposed to be utterly in love with him. "That is all that I could ask for, Colton. In turn, I shall do the same," She clearly reciprocated, understanding that all of this was necessary. Perhaps that was not the fairy tale ending that every little girl ever wished for, but this was imperative for her country. "This marriage is going to save both of our kingdoms and that is more important than any else I could have ever hoped for." Her voice was dignified and strong, no onger showing any trace of nerves or unease. She was to be Queen of both of their lands, and she could show no doubts.

Elaina wondered what her brother would think of her right now. Would he praise her for attempting to unify the kingdoms? Or would he claim that she was foolish for throwing her life away? Her chest ached, but this one the only thing that she could do. "I will do my best, Colton. As long as we convince our parents, I'm sure our people will believe us," She stated, allowing him to come closer than she would allow any stranger. She craned her neck to look up into her eyes, feeling his breath brush softly against her cheek. It was the first time she had seen the prince up close. His eyes seemed to pierce right into her own. Although this marriage had to be convincing, Colton seemed to be so aloof and distant as did she. Their interactions seemed so cold and mechanical. She could have been any woman that he could have plucked off the street, and he would have looked at her the same. Hopefully, they would be able to convince their parents.

For the remained of the night, she sat in front of the mirror and practiced her facial expressions. It seemed to be a natural talent to flawlessly smile in front of a crowd. However, this was her mother and her future mother-in-law. Her mother knew her better than anyone else in the family, easily able to read her darling little girl. Not even the fake, princess smile could fool her mother. This had to be so convincing that it was almost the truth. Hours upon hours passed until Elaina was finally convinced that it would be decent enough. She couldn't go around having dark circles around her eyes after all. Retiring to her bed for the night, she found a couple hours of sleep before the rays of the sun awoke her in the morning. Everything from last night seemed to wash over her like a dream until the ring around her neck slid down onto the pillow when she rolled over. Reaching out, she picked it up and stared at the information engraved into them. It stated his birth date accompanied by his position within the family. It appeared that Colton was a few months older than her.

Moving out of the bed, Elaina walked over toward the mirror and took in her features. Luckily, she had slept early enough for the circles around her eyes to be minimal, appearing as though it was just stress. Her skin was flawless without a blemish in sight though as her blues stared back her. Sitting down, Elaina began to put on foundation since it was special occasion. Her eyes lingered down to the ring that hung around her neck, signifying their engagement. Finishing off with a nude shade of lipstick, she stood from her seat and found a dress within her closet. It was more ornate than the previous days and definitely heavier. She requested for a few of her servants to help, unable to fasten her corset by herself. Her servants knew that Elaina never dressed up without an occasion and they spied the ring around the neck. As soon as they left, she knew that they would go buzzing around the castle with the news.

Emerging from her room, she joined her mother from breakfast in one of the many rooms. Her necklace was hidden beneath her hair, wanting to wait for the garden to bring it out. It was quite difficult to face her mother without a feeling of guilt looming over her head, and her mother quickly saw through her. "Elaina, we need to be strong against these Tattersalls. This is the last day of negotiation, but we cannot back down from them. If this fails, we could consult our advisers on our next move. We will avenge your brother and father. Do not worry," Charlotte Merton reassured her daughter, reaching out to lightly squeeze her hand. Elaina refrained from frowning or furrowing her eyebrows, but her mother could never understand the idea of peace or what she was trying to do. She was too buried in revenge and hatred to see the possibility of cooperation. Her poor mother. "How about we go for a walk? To clear our heads before we start deliberations. I think the fresh air will be good for us," She reached out for her mother to take her hand. Although Charlotte wasn't convinced that it was the only reason, she obliged and hoped that her daughter would share her thoughts.

Exiting through the double doors, she began her journey down the path as her eyes shifted around in search of Colton. Hearing a voice, she spotted a few feet down the pathway the prince with the queen, breaking out into a smile that she had practiced a dozen times last night. It was one of pure bliss and joy that was far from her regal one. Elaina continued her smile as she gazed up at him, stepping closer than she would to any man. "Good morning, Queen Tatterstall," She greeted with a quick curtsy. She reached up to fix the necklace around her neck, enabling it to finally be visible. Allowing Colton to pull the ring off of her neck, she felt the weight disappear once more. Elaina's eyes never left his, partially to look at him as if he were the only person who ever mattered and partially since she couldn't look at her mother's expression. Listening to Colton's speech, she could hear the gasps from both queens in utter shock, even Elaina was convinced that he loved her with those words. "Colton, you would give me the greatest honor and pleasure by allowing me to become your wife," She humbly accepted, holding out her left hand to receive the ring. After Colton took the ring off of its leather cord, it slid right onto her ring finger. It was snug and was perfectly fitted as if it was made for her.

Talen Falk | Naive ✘ Empathetic ✘ Fickle
    Image

"I will explain all of your questions, but you have to come inside. You're going to become hypothermic soon if we don't get you warm." He didn't answer her questions, but the promise of warmth tempted her enough to take a few steps forward. She had a long list of reasons not to trust a wolf, though few of them were based in logic. "If he wanted to hurt you, he'd likely of done it by now." She tried to tell herself as she lingered outside the gates for a few moments. Gathering her courage, keeping her face relaxed and calm though she felt anything but walking into a wolves den, Talen followed the mysterious wolf. His hair was dark and thick, groomed pretty neatly. This man, beasts, face was sharp and narrow much like his wolf's face had been. In fact, if she studied him hard enough Talen could see the uncanny resemblance he bore to the wolf. And it was oddly captivating. Keeping her head high as she followed through the village, she was aware of a few curious gazes on the strange duo. However, there was no malicious intent. They didn't shift into their wolf forms and eat her- in fact, she was beginning to think that perhaps humans had the wrong idea of these creatures.

All of them looked very human, though like the male leading her, they all sort of resembled the predators that slumbered beneath each heartbeat, waiting to be released. Each held a feral, wild grace that most humans lacked naturally. Her observations came to a close as she was ushered into what looked like the nicest looking house in the village. It reminded her of the village elder's home, and this further her suspicions that he held some position of power. An alpha? Did they govern themselves by a wolf hierarchy? She had so many questions, and not just about what they wanted with her. While at first she thought he hadn't noticed just how freezing she was, the man was quick to ask some servants to bring blankets, fresh clothing for her. "Thank you." Speaking again, though in a meeker manner, more reserved she allowed him to pull a chair for her and gracefully she slid into it, her large eyes bright and brimming with him to answer some questions. "My name is Nikolai. And what I want is your help." She had to bite her lip from scoffing at this. Her? Talen was just.. no one. Just a kid without parents who knew how to raise chickens and farm fields. And just about everyone knew how to do that.

But, at the same time the recollection of her incidents came flooding back, so maybe this Nikolai wasn't as crazy as he seemed. If nothing else Talen was raised to be polite so she bit her tongue until he finished. The brunette explained how his pack, she supposed he was a king, leader, or alpha of some sort, was at war. That it had been going on for years with a different, rival pack. That was also news to her, everyone assumed there was only one pack. But Talen could hardly draw a bowstring, let alone fight an actual wolf. Nervously she tucked a stray lock of copper hair behind her right ear. What happened if he thought she couldn't help him? Could she go back to her village? Did she want to? Would he kill her? Something in her really doubted that last option, but she was nervous and so she was assuming the worst for now. She watched his movements very closely as he draped a blanket over her shoulders, and shuddering with relief she drew the thick wool tighter around her. He wasn't done, the man stood in front of a bookcase, skimming for something and pulling out an aging leather-bound book, flipping open to a page and setting it in front of her. "You see, your mother was actually a witch that helped us but had to return behind the human walls when the war broke out."

Her mother? Leaning forward, the same lock of hair she'd tucked only a few minutes ago came tumbling forth spilling forward. "My mother?" She'd been too young to even remember the woman when she died. The details were blurry, no one liked to talk about it. One elder of the village said she'd been found swaddled in furs in a carriage full of furniture and clothing. Her mother's body had been discovered a bit off. Another said a woman left her outside the walls with a note that read simply, "Please take care." Someone else said her mother hadn't lived long in the village before she died of an ailment. Whatever the case, this pack seemed to be the only and last connection she had to this woman. "I know this is a lot to take in, and you have no reason to trust a werewolf. However, this is the truth," Glancing up, startled she'd forgotten he was there, Talen shook her head. What if she couldn't help him? Would he kill her? Deem her useless? Why were the two packs even fighting? But under his gaze she remained calm, composed. If her mother had helped them, promised she'd help this pack, they must be good people. Good people suffering. "I... I am not sure what I can do to help. But I will try. I would like to know why you're fighting with this pack however. I do not wish to commit myself to something fully unless I have all the details." The request felt reasonable, to her at any rate.

Colton Tattersall | Stoic ✘ Amiable ✘ Impulsive
    Image

Things were going just as he planned it, and against his better judgement Colton had to refrain from smiling at both queen's shocked gasps. As if this was the most treacherous thing they could imagine. But hopefully, once hte dust of this war cleared, they would adjust to the idea of peace. After all they weren't fighting for some cause anymore. They fought to avenge lost ones, and the hateful cycle only perpetuated. He would no longer allow that, and since he was the only person to ascend throne, to carry on the name and legacy of the Tattersall- he was practically the king. His mother could not stop him from this and she knew it. Colton, you would give me the greatest honor and pleasure by allowing me to become your wife," If possible, that grin of his grew deeper and ever so carefully he slipped his signet off of the cord and slid it onto her finger. It would do as an engagement ring for now, it was more of a symbol than anything, but he'd get her a real wedding ring to accompany that one. He'd grown out of it years ago though it fit Elaine's finger perfectly. Some would say it was fate, though Colton tried not to believe that stuff. As he slid the ring onto her finger, Colton leaned forward in a spur of the moment boldness laying a kiss to her forehead. Pulling away after a moment there was silence; though it quickly erupted into chaos.

"Colton?! What are you thinking?!" His mother gasped, clearly horrified with what was going on between them. Squaring his shoulders gently capturing Elaine's smaller hands in his own, Colton spoke with a confidence and authority that was unique to royals. "I think you've heard me. This woman is going to become my Naga. Queen. Whatever word you wish to use. I will ascend throne on my birthday, which will be in three days. I will wait the three days to ascend if I must, but I will be marrying Elaine." There was a scoff from Elaine's mother, and Colton flicked his gaze to the other woman. "You're ludicrous if you think I'm going to allow my daughter to marry the likes of a Tattersall. You'll stick a knife in her the moment the chance presents itself. I simply will not allow it." Of all the accusations and name calling he'd heard the past week that was the one that manged to crawl beneath his skin. However he exhaled, remaining calm for the sake of peace. "Queen Merton. If you'll recall, it's been your warriors who have had the tendency to stab the Tattersall women. Killing unborn infants simply for the fact they carry Tattersall blood. I would never lay a finger on the woman I love. I've sworn to hold her in the utmost respect. To protect her from any that wish harm. For, without her my life may as well be a shadow for she is my light." Pausing he added in a darker voice, "Since we'll become family shortly, dearest Queen, I ask you refrain from making such baseless remarks. Not a scratch will come to Elaine by my hand."

The queen pale, and the dangerous flash of Colton's gaze was hidden as he averted his gaze towards his own mother. "Naturally, this war will be ending upon the announcement of our marriage. From here on out I want all Tattersall warriors on the lines. I will be giving the orders for them to not attack myself and if anyone steps out of line it will be treason, which commands death. I suggest you all get used to this." Both queens looked horrified, their mouths agape as if they wanted to say something. "Colton..." His mother plead, though he shook his head. A breeze brought a particularly strong aroma of flowers he didn't quite know the names to. "My bride and I are going to sit down and talk about some things. Unless it's a dire, pressing matter; please do not disturb us." His tone left little room for arguments, as he let go of Elaine's hand, only to carefully place his arm around her shoulder to steer her back towards the castle. Once they were out of earshot he muttered, "That went better than expected. We're both still breathing." It was less of a joke and more of an observation. "We do need to discuss things. How will we be splitting time between each lands and castles? Would you prefer to keep your guard to guard you, or mine? A mixture of both? I think having two ceremonies would be a wise start. We can follow each custom, though I should warn you mine are a little different."

If nothing else, his people were open. Touchy, feely- emotional people who weren't afraid to declare their love, nor public displays of their affection for one another. From what he could gather, Khollager people were more reserved. Public displays of affection were frowned upon and royals were supposed to be able to hide any and all emotion, even in the most pressing of times. That's partially why his people thought that Khollager's were soulless. Colton would admit he thought so as well, until he saw Elaine in the filth and blood with his brother, comforting him and holding his hand; though she had lost plenty of people to his people, to his family as well. "Thank you for not backing out of this arrangement." Colton spoke again, wanting to praise her. This couldn't be easy, even though he was a grown man knowing that he wouldn't have much support with this arrangement stung. He was a king, his people were supposed to trust him yet they wanted more war. That's what stung he supposed. He hoped and prayed that after everything settled, and people grew accustomed to the peace- they would accept them. Accept their rule and realize he wanted only what was best for them. Colton didn't think he could go another lifetime with the same blood, hurt, and loss the rest of his forefathers had dealt with. He would find a way to end this war. Through marriage, friendship- or if he had to he'd tear down the Merton castle brick by brick on his own. He just hoped it didn't come to that.

    Nikolai Torbjorn | Wolf King

    Image

It was more than reasonable for her to request more information about her background as well as the pack's. There would be no reason to devote herself to a cause that she didn't believe in. "What would you like to know?" He questioned, knowing that even he didn't have all of the answers. There were some pieces of history that were never recorded, such as secret transactions between other pack members. "I will explain to you everything that I know, but I do not know if it will satisfy all of your questions," He warned before launching off into his explanation. Nikolai told her of the conflict between the Curaj and the Numar packs, telling of their dispute over their lands. The amount of lives lost continued to double on a daily basis, growing the hatred between both clans. "I want to put a stop to this, but the other pack has made it clear that they intend to annihilate us. There is no room to negotiate piece talks." If there was a way to end the war, it would have been resolved years ago. Instead, both packs continued to destroy each other.

"Now, there isn't much that I know about your family. Your mother's alliance was more classified since she wanted to have little known ties with us as possible. She wanted to be safe, especially when she had you." All of Nikolai's knowledge on the Falk family came from his father who was around to facilitate the alliance. There wasn't much his father knew either though since their contact with the witch was limited. She completely fell off of the grid and disappeared into thin air when Talen was born. "She promised that you would be able to help us when you turn eighteen. In return, we promised that we would protect you," He stated, lifting his eyes to meet her gaze. It was clear that Talen was perplexed by the whole entire situation, feeling as though she had been hit by a brick. Here he was spouting information about her having secret magic and how she needed to help this wolf pack defeat another wolf pack to end an eighteen year war. If he were in her shoes, Nikolai was unsure if he would believe every word.

Ending his monologue, he exhaled and scanned her face for some sort of message. "That's all I know about your situation and how you can help mine," He earnestly stated, hoping that she would still want to help their cause. According to his father, she would be the key to ending this war. Whether or not she realized, the Curaj pack was in her hands. Standing up from his chair, he added a few more logs to the fire. The wood crackled and glowed brilliantly in response as if thanking him. "I will leave you to think about it. I know that this is probably very hard to digest. Get some rest and request for me when you have come to a decision," He instructed before turning on his heel to leave the young witch alone. Although it was his quarters, Nikolai knew that she needed the sleep more than he did. Plus, there was more work awaiting him back at the war table to complete, especially considering his absence.

"Son, how did it go?" His father questioned, finding his son on the walk back. Nikolai expressed that Talen was still mulling over the situation but seemed to be in favor of helping the pack. The only obstacle that they would encounter was the fact that she was a young witch without a mentor. If she couldn't keep her magic in check, it would grow out of control. It was something to think about. "I will try to find a contact that would be willing to train her," His father reassured, reaching out to place a firm hand on Nikolai's shoulder. "Good job, Nik, I'm sure that you will be a wonderful alpha someday." That was something that Nikolai thoroughly appreciate, needing some praise every now and then. Sometimes he wondered if he was even helping out the Curaj, knowing that every decision made an impact.
    Elaina Merton | The Princess

    Image

Elaina could only imagine what was running through her mother's mind right know. Probably wondering how she had raised her child to only have her married off to a Tatterstall. It was the truest form of betrayal, losing her last remaining child. The last stab that sent her off the edge. Facing her back to the two queens, she hid her expression with his chest. She squeezed her eyes tightly shut before quietly exhaling, using the cover of Colton's kiss on her forehead. All that she needed to do was breathe. She was doing this for the greater good of the Khohallgers, her people. She had to be strong. When he pulled away, Elaina glanced up at him with a growing smile before turning to face their audience. The sting of her mother's disappointment was evident on her face while Queen Tattersall's gaze felt like daggers. She was stealing the Tattersall's only heir to the throne. Therefore, it was no surprised when the Queen cried out in horror. She clearly hoped that this was all some sort of sick joke that was being played on the royal families.

Clasping onto Colton's hands, although they were rather large, she turned her attention to Queen Tattersall without faltering. "Queen Tattersall, I hope that you will accept our marriage. I truly love your son and it would mean the world to us," She urged, keeping her comments minimal yet refined. There was no need for her to rant on and on about why they needed to be together. It would be too suspicious since Elaina tended to find the perfect time to interject her comments. Turning to face her mother was the worst. The same look of betrayal was evident in her eyes as words of hatred spilled from her mouth. Although Charlotte was adamant about manners in the royal court, this was the first time she had seen her mother with no filter. Elaina never thought that her mother was capable of such hateful words, glancing up to see a flash of anger contort Colton's face. "Mother, I can assure that you that it is nothing like that. I trust Colton to take care of me, and he trusts me to take care of him. He gives me life and this is the first time I have been happy since the war consumed our lives," She explained to her mother with a calm demeanor. If only her mother could see the way that she reacted, acting like a child who had her toy taken away. Elaina's heart throbbed, but she refused to drop her gaze.

"As for the Merton soldiers, we shall the do the same. In addition, we will aid the Tattersall warriors with repairing the damage done to all of their villages and honor all of the lives lost. Any of our resources will be shared to help the relief effort." Her mother's jaw went slightly slack as she could barely believe the words that were coming out. "Elaina, think about what you're saying," She trailed off in utter shock. Although, Elaina resolved any doubts she had about this plan. "I hope you both enjoy the rest of your day." Turning away from both queens, she was guided out of the courtyard by Colton and waited until they were out of earshot to exhale loudly. She needed a moment to breathe and pull herself back together. The Khollagers were ones never to show emotions, able to easily suppress emotions. However, even this was too much for Elaina. She had never seen her mother in that state before. Her mother had the strongest mask of all, but this had managed to crack it wide open. "I need a moment," She excused herself to pace back and forth a few times, taking in deep breaths. Her mother would have to come to understand their marriage. Perhaps even thank her in the end.

Returning back to Colton's side, she was ready to negotiate their terms. "I think it's only fair that we attempt to spend time equally on both of our lands. It will be a lot of travel, but until all the towns have gained their footing again I think it will be necessary. As for guards, we can do a mixture. I have come to like and trust my guards with my life, as I'm sure you have grown accustomed to yours." Her eyes could not help but flicker down to the ring on her finger. This was truly happening and no longer a mere idea or promise made on a whim. Elaina heard of the Elsekr traditions but never in detail since Khollagers never desired to know of their customs. They were quite content with their current ones. As for their ceremony, it was concise and required little to no touching between the bride and the groom other than the traditional kiss. It was the Khollagers concept that ceremonies such as this required little attention. In the case of royals, it was slightly a bigger deal. However, it still remained a small, intimate ceremony with immediate members of the royal family.

Shaking her head, Elaina knew that she would have never thought this up without him. "Thank you for coming up with this arrangement," She countered, wanting to tell him how grateful she was. Of course, she never thought that this was going to be an easy arrangement. Many people would detest their relationship and they would have to prove to many that it was real. She would be completely out of her comfort zone, even without the security of her mother. It would be a long road to having both kingdoms accept them. However, if this didn't work, she was prepared to resort to something else. She wished it wouldn't have to come to something of that caliber, but she couldn't like this war continue on any longer. Too many people were being sacrificed.

Talen Falk | Naive ✘ Empathetic ✘ Fickle
    Image

By the time that Nikolai left she was in shock. Dazed, completely befuddled on what to do. This man seemed to trust her, seemed to believe that Talen was actually going to be an asset to this war he'd been fighting. A war that was probably nearly as old as he was. To top it all off, the information of her mother, though scarce and few... It had been appreciated. There was something about this pack that made the woman want to help them. Whatever it was she for them. She looked up briefly as he told her to rest and think about what she wanted, and to get him when she'd reached some conclusions. "Yes... Goodnight then Nikolai" Her voice was hardly heard above the crackling of the fire, as her gaze watched him retreat. He'd grown up probably with memories laced and riddled by war. Assuming he was alpha, and had been intended to be so since birth, he must of always known that he was going to inherit this mess. Because war could never be anything but messy. Slowly she unfolded herself from the chair, standing and stretching to her petite and fragile-appearing height of 5', give or take an inch. Her body was now warmed up, but any snow she'd come into contact with on her trek here had melted, and causing her clothes to be wet.

They stuck to her skin as she peeled them away, letting the blanket fall away as she shivered when the air hit her bare skin. Quickly she pulled on the fresh set of sleeping clothes he'd left for her before sitting down near the fire to think about her situation. Here was the opportunity to help people. If neither side would truly talk peace, there was something in her that innately trusted the Curaj pack over the Numar pack. The more she thought about it, the more Talen realized that she couldn't go back to the village. If any of them were suspect she was anything less than human, she'd be burned at the stake. That's what the Old Laws dicated happen when a non-human was found in the walls. Because fire was the surefire thing to kill anything. But that left Talen kind of marooned here unless she wanted to build her own remote cabin out in the forest. And the delicate looking female already knew that would be dangerous. There was safety in numbers and in terms of survival, staying with the Curaj pack for the time being would be the smartest solution. They didn't seem to want to harm her, just wanted her help. And Talen always prided herself of being a woman of honor. If her mother promised that she would help, it could of very well been one of last promises she made. Who was Talen to ignore that?

Watching the flames billow in the stone hearth, she closed her eyes languidly as the heat washed over her alabaster skin, dotted with freckles. If nothing else this place was a warm bed, food in her belly, and a chance to do something good. "This might be the best it get's Talen." She spoke aloud, to the flame as if it would answer her, though the girl knew better. "I suppose I know what I'll be doing." The decision hadn't been an easy one, but it was the sensible one. And as she stood, crawling into the bed she'd been given for the night, it was the one that felt right. Let the village think she was eaten. Life would move on for them. She had no beau or children waiting for her return. And this may be her best chance of leaving those damned walls for good. Sleep was an easy thing. Almost the moment she made herself comfortable on the bed in which clearly comfort had been in mind as her tiny frame sunk into the soft bedding, she fell asleep. Her dreams were scattered images of things that she'd forget in the morning. A red cloaked figure disappearing in the fog filled forests. Pants and the sound of teeth snapping at heel. While it felt unnerving in her dream, Talen still managed to get a good night's sleep.

The girl could sleep through a flood her aunt had always reckoned. By the time she awoke the next morning, curled in a little ball with the blankets wrapped every which way around her body; the girl needed a moment to register where she was. An unfamiliar bed, wolves, pacts and war all came rushing back and the young witch made a soft noise, a cross between a yawn and a groan, before kicking the covers off. It wasn't her bed, so she was quick to braid her thick hair, slip back into the clothes she'd come in which were now dry from being laid out at the fire, folding the pajamas and placing them on the table and making the bed before she dared to venture from the place she'd been instructed to sleep. Upon opening the door of the home and stepping out into the village Talen squinted her eyes at the harsh rays of light and impossibly blue skies. Wrapping the cloak tighter about her shoulders she wasn't exactly sure who she was supposed to talk to. This village was bigger than she originally thought, and she wondered if everyone here were wolves. Did they only take other wolves as their partners? "Miss Falk? I'm to be attending you; are you looking for Nikolai?" Turning she nearly gasped with surprise. A young woman probably about her age had managed to creep up on the young witch, though it wasn't intentional. "Oh, uh- yes. If you could get him that'd be helpful." She nodded, her onyx hair bouncing around her heart-shaped face.

"Right, well someone will show you around later but for now you should probably get back to the house. I'll send for Nikolai right away." Before she could ask of the dark-haired girl's name; she was off and running disappearing around the bend of a home. Shrugging it off the redhead returned to the home she'd only just exited, removing her cloak and hanging it over a chair before sitting down. The book from last night was still on the table, and curiously she picked it up, running her slender fingers over the cover. Was this a diary of some sorts? The Curaj records of the war? If so, it may come in handy to read it. A lot of the redhead's questions had been answered last night, but if there was other information that could be useful, she'd read of it. Her attention was shifted when the door opened and hurriedly she put the book down, trying to keep a professional, neutral expression as Nikolai appeared in the doorway. In the light, he was actually a good bit more attractive than she'd originally thought. His lips were full, and his eyes were the kind of brown that bloomed on rain-washed iron. The man's chest was broader than the normal men of her village, and hurriedly Talen averted her gaze to avoid the impression she'd been staring. "I've thought about your offer." She stated in a leisurely tone. "I accept. I'll help you, but in return I'd like to stay here, in this village for awhile. At least until I can control my magic. Otherwise if I go back and the village suspects I'm less than human I'll be put to death." She was a creature of survival, and she wanted ensure that if she didn't lose her life to this war, she'd have some place to go home to without fearing for her life.

Colton Tattersall | Stoic ✘ Amiable ✘ Impulsive

She was a fair women, this was made evident by the fact she wanted compromised and he appreciated that. This arrangement wouldn't work if one side only followed their customs. Things were going to have to change. They had to be the catalyst that allowed for that. "I'm sure we've both grown accustomed to things. Hopefully we'll only change the bad and make both our people stronger. United." Colton added hinting that he would be fine with compromise as well. She couldn't be the only one trying to make this work. Nor should she, Colton wanted this just as much as she did. "Thank you for coming up with this arrangement." He paused, frowning little. Would she still be thanking him when the reality set in for both of them. "Elaine." He paused, glancing around to make sure there were no prying ears before continuing. "I don't know if you should thank me. We've... We've sacrificed a lot to even get to this arrangement. I'm not a fool, I don't expect you to love me; nor do I expect to love you. We don't have the general public's support... Well we won't when it's announced. Hell, our parents aren't exactly jumping for joy either."

He paused gathering his thoughts before his eyes faded back to their cool, impersonal aquatic hues. "What I'm saying is we haven't convinced the people of this. Even if we manage to do so, we're going to have to pretend to love each other for as long as the other lives. Peace will be too unstable. I'm afraid I've damned us both to lonely lives for the sake of peace." His gaze flicked to her hand, his ring on her finger and added in a heavier solemn voice, "For that, please don't thank me. But as I said last night. I will make it my endeavor to make sure you're relatively happy. I won't push you into doing anything other than political obligations." Just duties she'd need to take as Naga. Giving audience to those who seek it. Being a Naga was more than just being a symbol of power. It was being one with the people, sharing in their suffering, making friends- even rivals. It wasn't acting aloof and setting yourself apart. That's not how the Tattersall had gotten their people to loyally follow them for thousands of years. And their circumstances would call on Elaine to be witty, charming, smart- knowing how to work and please a crowd. She needed to gain their trust. The people were the key component in all of this.

And he believed she could do it. Colton believed that Elaine had the determination and drive to pull this off. She was made of iron and oak- not a will that bent easily. There weren't many private places to speak around the castle, but his room was normally free of unwanted ears. But, if he wanted to go out to get to know her, it should be best facilitated out of the castle, yet close enough that neither would be in immediate danger. "If you're up for an outing, we could go to the markets. There's plenty of things that I'm sure would be of interest to you." Colton as much as a part of him wanted to, didn't hate her. He couldn't. Because as much as he wanted to promise himself not to love her, he couldn't deny the princess was stunning. But if he loved her, and lost her- Colton didn't want to open himself up in that way to her. And there was blood between them. Her want for peace might outshine her taste for war- but could she really ever look at him and not see someone who was related to the kin which slaughtered hers? Could he look past her Merton name? It was just too early to tell. But he was an honest man. Colton would treat her the best he knew how. "We can assemble your guard if you wish to go out. A few should do."

He wanted to start pushing everyone together, for his people to realize that this- this alliance was happening. He would begin giving commands to withdraw and begin focusing on rebuilding efforts once his marriage was solidified. That would be his first matter of business. Then he could move onto unifying the people, once they weren't trying to kill one another. Already the young king in everything but official title, felt a migraine brewing behind his temples. He wasn't sure how often they would get a chance to spend time together, lesiure days. Already with the repetitive war he hardly got any time. What happened when he and Elaine began to steer their people into days of peace? His brain bred more questions than answers, but he held his tongue on them. Elaina as bright as she was, couldn't see the future. She couldn't answer his fears and worries at the moment. "Also, before you answer will you mind staying behind when your mother leaves? I'll have a tailor bring you some clothes, but I would like for you to be at my ascent to the throne. We can do the ceremony there and then." Luckily, he was already well liked by his people. It would be a large turnout for his ceremony. And if these people truly respected him, they would learn to accept his wife as well.

    Nikolai Torbjorn | Wolf King

    Image

When he returned back to the war table, there were dozens of sheets of reports spread out across the map. His scouts informed him of the Numar pack tearing through their sub-villages leaving behind no survivors. In total, they lost twenty lives from the attack. They described it as a bloodbath with crimson scattered everywhere in sight as the buildings burnt to a crisp. According to the scouts, it was one of the more gruesome sights that they had ever witnessed thus far. An anger flared within him, suddenly desiring to get even with the Numar pack. He wanted an eye for an eye and revenge for his people. Taking in a deep breath, he paused for a moment to think about his lapse in judgement. Nikolai sighed as he pinched the bridge of his nose, thinking about all of the women and children that the war claimed. No, his pack at needed to be the bigger people. He could not draw in more innocent people any longer, and he could only pray that Talen could help him.

For the next couple of hours, Nikolai paced in circles around the ornate table that marked every move that the Curaj pack intended to make. The table showcased the lands that surrounded their villages, where conflicts had occurred, and how they were solved. Every single piece of information from the beginning of the pack's foundation was engraved into history on this table, and it was a valuable asset. From just once glance, Nikolai was able to view how his predecessors had handled events. Taking this advice, he resolved situations and reallocated troops to compensate for areas that were exposed. They were beginning to spread out thinner than he had hoped, which made him a tad more nervous. With the younger populations becoming more passionate and impatient, Nikolai knew that they would demand to join the war soon. However, he wanted to prevent that from happening. The younger generation had too much potential to lose it on the battlefield.

He was pulled from his thoughts with a soft knock at the door. "Enter," Nikolai called out, turning to peer over his shoulder. The servant named Raven that he had asked to monitor Talen slipped in to tell that she had reached a decision. It was quite faster than he had thought, considering that it hadn't been more than one day for her to reach a conclusion. "Yes, I will be there in a moment. Thank you, Raven." Finishing up with the his current matter, Nikolai wandered back over toward his quarters. It was bright, new day for the Curaj pack. The warm rays of the sun washed over his skin, brightening his mood if only by a little. It would be a perfect day to go for a run and enjoy the breeze running through his mane. His inner wolf practically begged for it. A nice break from all of the stress of war and a way to clear his muddled mind.

He gave a knock before entering inside, quietly closing the door behind him. Spotting her off near the table, Nikolai drank her in. She appeared to be in better shape after her rest, seeing the color spreading across her cheeks. Her heartbeat was rhythmic and her breathing was even, showing full recover from the journey up the mountains. Her body was resilient and faster at recuperating than he had seen any human, except for the fact that she was no regular human. Stepping closer, he listened to her words and nodded as he wandered over toward the dimming fire. "I accept your proposal. Our pack will do anything in our power to accommodate you." It was clear that Talen was level-headed and thought about her survival. If she would return back to the humans, they would have burned at the stake at one sign of her being involved with witchcraft. It seemed that humans believed in elimination at the first sign of the unknown.

"My father is trying to find someone to mentor you. Someone who wields magic and help you take control over it," He informed her, stepping away from the fire to make his way across the room to her. There was no guarantee that they would find anyone, considering how limited their contacts were. As soon as the Curaj entered into war, most of their allies wanted to remain neutral. "Until then, I will help you with your combat training. Worst comes to worst, you have to be prepared to fight without your magic," He warned, picking up the book off of the table. This book was the entire history of the Curaj pack from its foundation. It included the lineage of the alpha line and all of the alliances that they made throughout history. It was an essential piece to them and it was passed down from alpha to alpha. "If you have any other questions, this book should have the answer," He held it out for her to take. "I will have the servants set up a spot for your quarters in the village. Until then, would like to get some food? I'm sure that this will be your first meal all day."

Every word that Colton spoke was true. She would have to sacrifice everything for this marriage, as if it were completely real. It already started with the loss of her mother and the list would continue to grow. Perhaps it was still too early to exchange thank-yous for this arrangement, but she would never think of any other way to resolve the matter. The only other option they had was to continue the war, which was even worse than her mother's spite. "I know, Colton. This is long journey ahead of us, but I hope it works out for the best. We have to work with each other," She declared with a hushed tone, attempting to remain strong for her kingdom. The only person she could rely on throughout this ordeal was Colton Tattersall, who was the one person she never thought she would have to trust.

They still had more work to be done in order to convince others of their marriage. Once word reached her people, she knew they would be in anarchy. Many would curse at her or wonder if she had gone mad. What her people wanted was revenge for all of their lives lost. However, Elaina acknowledged that it would be a never-ending cycle of death and despair. As Queen of Khollager, her people looked up to her with respect and wanted a passionate leader. Her people believed that she would be their victor and end the war once and for all. It had been quite some time since a female took the throne, but her people quickly adjusted to accept her poise and strength. This act would completely diminish their image of her. "If it makes it you feel that uncomfortable, I will retract my statement. For now, I am here to see this arrangement through," She rephrased, letting her eyes wander back over toward her ring once more. It flickered back at her, reminding her of their iron clad promise.

She silently wondered what the people of Elsekr requested of their queen, or rather, their naga. It seemed that these lands were more governed by an emotional connection, which was clearly foreign to her. All her people requested of her were results and a show of strength and pride. "Yes, I haven't had a chance to look at your country yet," She realized, being trapped inside of the kingdom for the duration of their trip. Her mother was too worried that someone would try to assassinate the current and future owners to the Khollager throne. Because of the picture that the Mertons had painted of the Tattersalls, Colton was far from what she thought. He was neither condescending nor a liar. He appeared to be level-headed and rational. On top of all of that, he was handsome and clearly groomed to be a king. However, there was a lot of history between the two of them, and her body was programmed to cringe from even breathing the same air as a Tattersall. Although, she still couldn't bring herself to hate him. He held the same ideals that she had and only wished the end the war. Colton had a good heart, and Elaina could see it.

"I will request for my guards to meet us outside then," She nodded, knowing that they could not be far away. The tension in the castle continued to build every day between the guards, always one step away from striking at each other. The only thing preventing them was the orders from their rulers. Although, it seemed that even it may not be enough any longer. She turned to leave when he spoke once more, pausing to glance back at his request. Stay behind? Of course, it made the most sense but it had been days since she had returned back to her lands. She missed her people and the comfort of her kingdom. Despite her persona wishes, she needed to stay behind and attend the ceremony to show her support for Elsekr. "I'm sure that my people won't appreciate you keeping me longer than my intended duration, but I will stay. I will inform my mother," She concluded, feeling the nerves starting to form in the pit of her stomach. The ceremony would be in a few days, and she would soon become Naga. She still had no idea exactly what the ceremony entailed for her or how the Elsekr even crowned their next king. This entire environment was an enigma to her. "How exactly does Elsekr tradition work?" She asked, beckoning for him to join her on her walk to find one of her guards. After all, they needed to be attached to the hip if they were madly in love.

"I accept your proposal. Our pack will do anything in our power to accommodate you." A sort of feline like grin touched on her lips. Then it was a deal, she'd stay around and do what she could. "Then it's settled." She agreed, leaning back a bit in her seat, her eyes flickering to the fireplace. She had agreed, last night she had saw little other choice. And she still did, but Talen wasn't quite sure what exactly she could do yet. What would be of help to them. She was a scrawny thing, and always had been . She had a decent aim with a bow, but it was more to just scare off bandits or animals. As if reading her mind, Nikolai spoke again. "My father is trying to find someone to mentor you. Someone who wields magic and help you take control over it." Making a soft noise of excitement in the back of her throat the girl's face brightened as she met his gaze again. The prospect of learning the last gift her mother passed onto her was thrilling. And she was curious to know just what extent she could do things. However the smile was shifted to something more akin to panic when he mentioned in the meantime he'd be training her with the physical aspect of battle.

She supposed it was part of the deal, but the thought of even sparring with him was daunting. It was daunting for Talen to think of fighting even their eldest pack member. But she trusted him not to kill her or anything so she just nodded. "Okay. Let's hope it doesn't come to that." She joked lightly, more under her breath than anything. Her sharp gaze followed his movements as he held up the book she'd previously been beginning to browse. "If you have any other questions, this book should have the answer." The book was held out to her and reaching out she gently took it, grazing his fingers with his. They were warm, warmer than her's were, and calloused probably from many years of shifting, working, and holding weaponry. Biting her lip gently she hurriedly pulled the book back towards her, tempted to flip through the first pages though she looked up as Nikolai spoke again, though this time it wasn't a tip or pointer about the war he fought. "I will have the servants set up a spot for your quarters in the village. Until then, would like to get some food? I'm sure that this will be your first meal all day."

She was surprised her stomach didn't growl with fierce agreement about not having had food yet. The last time she ate was yesterday afternoon, and she was pretty hungry. Standing up, she nodded. "Thank you for your kindness Nikolai. I would really appreciate that." She wasn't sure whether he'd have something brought to her, for her to eat alone or if they all ate together. She was beginning to relax around him, and although she still saw him as a wolf, she didn't see him as a predator or a danger to herself anymore. It was odd, this implicit trust she held of him. They were just about perfect strangers, yet there was something about him that made her relax. To trust his word over anyone else's in this pack, or any other pack. Grabbing her cloak, pulling it over her clothing and pulling it tight around her shoulders as they stepped out into the brisk morning air; Talen felt more at ease than she had in awhile. Here, she had a clear purpose. Whatever was happening with her, whatever magic was brewing in her veins was seen as an asset- not a curse. Not something to be put to death over. And this village, it seemed peaceful. Children chased each other about, some in wolf forms and other's not, while the people stood in small clusters, talking or scurrying about with some purpose that the redheaded witch wasn't quite aware of. What she was aware of was how every eye that fell upon Nikolai, was a gaze filled with utter respect and in som cases awe. Even from a outsider's point of view, it was clear that he was highly looked up to. "He must run this pack well. Even in a war."

Talen thought to herself. The walk was short enough that she didn't get to explore everything, but Talen had been promised there would be a chance to do so later. Within a span of minutes they arrived at a smaller house, and upon stepping into the home she noted some food was already laid out. This was probably where he had slept Talen realized. The food was still hot enough, and there were two wooden plates. Slipping into the chair furthest from the door, and closet to the wall she shucked her cloak off hanging it off the back of the chair. "When do you plan on trying to train me?" The sooner, was probably the better. Sure she was fast, quick on her feet; but had the strength of a field-mouse. She doubted very much she'd be able to hold her own in a hand to hand fight with a wolf. A pitcher of something was in the middle of the table, but she wasn't terribly thirsty as of now. Unsure of proper etiquette of eating with a wolf, an alpha, she waited for him to begin first before taking a tentative bite of the buttered bread on her plate. The bread itself was fluffy and soft, easy to chew while the butter only enhanced it's natural flavor adding a little bit of creaminess to it. "How long have you been an alpha? Have you always been in line to take over?" It was evident that the little copper haired witch, was a curious one. Talen was curious about him, wanted to know more about the man that she was going to be working closely with. She wanted to get a feel for his morals, his justice code- what he would and would not do. And she wanted to understand this innate trust she had for him, if it was well placed or not.

"Yes, if we manage to make the year and peace really comes- we'll thank one another then." Even though this was not the solution she'd probably been hoping for, Elaine's strength and resolve made the young king's head spin with admiration. It was better to have a queen who could hold her own. Who people would respect and learn to look up to. Colton already knew what picture he would paint of her. The willing queen, ready to become Naga. Ready to leave her family and strict rules for their laxer, more open traditions. The woman who could stand by his side as an equal. They would appear like any other love struck couple, and Colton would tantalize his people into liking her with their forbidden love story. "This has to work. I can't continue this war any longer." If he were sure it'd bring peace, Colton would fall upon his own sword. If it would ensure the safety of his people, but it wouldn't. His people would suffer should something happen to him. And her people would suffer should some ill fate befall Elaine. And he simply wanted to wash his hands of this war, abstain from death and live as people should. He wanted to have children, raise them in a world he was not scared a war would snatch from him. "How exactly does Elsekr tradition work?"

Glancing up as she beckoned for him to join her, Colton walked close enough their arms brushed- but nothing more. "It's not as sinful as you've probably heard." Colton started off, offering a wry smile. "From the day a Elsekr child is born, they're never alone. Not even myself. If it's not in it's parent's arms then it's in a communal nursery with other children. Playing, learning- but never alone. I do warn you, adults are a little more open with their affection for one another. Kisses, hand holding, hugging- it's all natural. So you'll probably see some of that today... And just like in our belief of being open it translates to how we speak with one another. If someone doesn't like something they're likely to say something." These were just the basics. There were more, intricate social norms but he didn't think she'd need to know them as of now. Making sure to keep close enough to her that the guards wouldn't mistake the fact they were indeed together, he continued. "Elsekr goddesses gave us emotion as a gift. We should not hide those things. It makes us who we are, it's proof we have a soul thanks to her creation. These emotions, love, they're gifts. That's why political weddings are looked down upon in Elsekr society." He didn't know very much of gods, though before he could ask the guard took it upon themselves to jog towards the duo, hands on their weapons.

Which was for the best, he wasn't sure he could explain just how sacred and beautiful emotion and unity were to the Elsekr people. Which is why it would be so important for Elaine to become a Naga of the people. More so than her predecessors. Quickly falling silent Colton refrained from sliding his arm across her shoulders. These were her guards, raised on her beliefs. If such touches were frowned upon, he wouldn't want to tarnish his wife's name. Even if she was only his wife on title. "Princess Merton, is everything alright?" The guard that spoke was glaring not so subtly at Colton, though he manged to look amused and disinterested with this guard all at once. As Elaine explained that they were going to the marketplace to browse wears, the guard then seemed to realize the ring on Elaine's finger. Colton's ring. It was set on black onyx stone, inlaid with a silver stag and garnet eyes. On the backside was some information about himself. Birthdate, lineage... Just proof of his royal blood. Every Tattersall had a personal one. And as most had reacted thus far, the guard looked positively scandalized. However he said nothing, just tightly nodded his head. "We'll assemble an escort." The guard grumbled, turning to go and sort out the rest of his men who stood a few yards away.

And the other things she could see and work out for herself. Colton had figured as long as she had a reason to why their people were so different, she'd manage to work everything else for herself. Arts, dance, and music were as important to the Elsekr as politics. Because all those things allowed you to express a soul to another as best as one could. "What about you? Of Khollager customs? I hear it's quite different, but I'm a little hesitant to believe everything I've heard about your people and their customs. But it's not my wish to embarrass you in front of your guards or people." He knew things like she'd be the first queen to ascend throne in years. But did they have a patriarchal society? His people formally had one, but anyone could be influential here; and their women were just as fierce as their men. He figured that her people were about as equal to one another as his were. From a few feet away his gaze remained on the guards, who were hunched together, probably trying to force a few to go. Tattersall had the reputation of being silver tongued, sinful, and untrustworthy. Few Khollagers would want to willingly escort him around. What the guard didn't seem to realize what, he didn't need anyone's protection going into the marketplace with his people. Not only could he protect himself against any would-be attackers. Once the people got used to her, Elaine could go out with only a couple guards- or so he predicted.

    Nikolai Torbjorn | Wolf King

    Image

It was clear that the petite witch was excited by the possibility of learning more about her lineage. This was her last connection to her mother, which meant a great deal. Nikolai could see the spark in her eye and the drive to pursue this gift even further. In his culture, it was a sign that she was destined to be a warrior out on the front lines of battle. Although, her expression shifted once more to one of horror and panic once he had mentioned war. Since the humans kept her sheltered, this would have been the first time she could have encountered these circumstances. "Talen, I am not going to lie and tell you that training will be easy, but it's only going to work in your favor," He promised, knowing that it would sharpen her mind. Just one glance, any wolf would be able to snap her in half in this state. She looked too frail to be considered a threat to any enemy, and Nikolai wanted to take advantage of that. They would never see her strength coming.

He paused at the exchange of the book as her fingers lightly brushed against his own. That was the first time he had any physical interaction with a human, other than for battle purposes of course. Nikolai never took the time to truly observe her cooler fingers with her heart subtly beating beneath. Her hands were smooth, and he could easily encapsulate his entire hand around hers. Her world was completely different than his own. Exiting his quarters, he guided Talen across the village to headquarters. Since wolves preferred to live in smaller villages, it only took a minute or so to reach their destination. "Don't be shy. Take as much as you'd like," He urged her, taking the seat across. On the table were various jams and jellies with an array of breads accompanied by a variety of freshly picked fruits. Nikolai was quite pleased with how efficiently his workers were this morning, knowing they had a guest in midst. He reached out to pick off an apple and bit into it, enjoying his first meal of the day as well. Although, his bite was so huge that he practically devoured one quarter of the apple.

After observing her physical capacity, Nikolai figured that it would be best to start with the lightest weapon possible. Perhaps daggers would suit her. She could be nimble and have stealth in her favor for being petite. He would train her like he would train any werewolf though, pushing her to the edge of her capabilities. It was the best route of getting her to the greatest potential. "I planned on giving you a tour of the village and then starting training," He informed her, taking another bite. "We will start with physical combat then move on to weaponry. I will work on all of them with you, but you can pick which one you'd like to pursue." Most of the werewolves felt draw to a certain weapon, as if it were made for them. As soon as it was placed into the palm of their hands, they accelerated and moved with ease. As for Nikolai, he was skilled with two-hand wielding the axe. It was the heaviest of all weapons but it glided through the air in his hands with ease.

Nikolai was surprised that Talen had an understanding about the werewolf hierarchy. Humans tended to shy away from learning about their kind all together, but she a curious little witch. It made him lightly chuckle before taking another bite of the apple. "I have been an alpha since I was born. My entire lineage is filled with alphas, so it runs in my blood," He obliged, knowing that the other wolves treated him with respect. "And yes I have always been in line to take over. In fact, when my father decides to step down, I am next in line." There was a lot of responsibility that he was carrying around like a giant slab of stone balancing on his shoulders. One false move and it would completely slide out of his control. He had his father's wisdom and advice, reassuring that he had the proper training growing up. "What about you? Tell me about yourself." He realized that he knew little about Talen other than the fact that her mother was associated with the clan and was a witch. Finishing off the last quarter of the apple, he placed the core down onto the table.
    Elaina Merton | The Princess

    Image

Feeling his arm brush against her own, the princess's first instinct was to move away and provide more space between them, but she didn't move. Elaina needed to let him invade her personal bubble. Listening to him explain, she could not help her eyes flicker over toward him in surprise. She already had prior knowledge that the Elsekr kingdom was more open with their emotions and expressed them quite often, but she never heard of people hugging or even kissing public. In the Khollgar kingdom, her people only did this in private. "Oh, I see," She knit her eyebrows together, attempting to understand his explanation. Speaking through physical contact? "That's quite odd, actually," She half-laughed since it was an entirely new concept to her. When they went out in public, she would view it with her own eyes for the first time. Would she feel abashed or embarrassed about viewing two people kiss out on the street? Most certainly.

If political weddings were frowned upon, the Elsekr found another reason to dislike the Khollager. Emotionless marriages happened quite frequently for woman or men to move up in social status and for wealth. These marriages started with logic first and then blossomed into romance. It was corrupt, now that she thought about it, but that was the way that their country ran since the beginning of time. It was how it flourished to become to great nation that it was today. According to the Khollager, rational is all that mattered and emotions followed afterward. What made the most sense was always the first question. "Yes, everything is great. I planned on going out for the day and would like a couple guards to accompany me," She requested, noticing the side glances to Colton. It was quite clear that the guard was shocked to find an engagement ring adorning her finger. "Is there a problem?" She questioned, waiting for the guard to say something. All the guard did was bow and heed her request, rushing off to assemble the other guards. Elaina hoped that they would come to understand her decision.

Turning on her heels, she started back toward the front entrance to the kingdom. Her guards would meet her there. "Yes, it is quite different from your culture," She confirmed, thinking that their two kingdom were almost completely opposite. "My people believe in the idea of being rational at all times. They try to not be clouded by emotion and usually hide it behind a mask. In the end, everyone places reason before desire or anything of that nature." For that reason, most of the rulers tended to be men. Her society believed that women were the more emotional of the two sexes, although it was possible to have a female ruler. "We don't touch unless it's in private. My people accept hand holding in public but some of the elders still frown upon it. Kissing and hugging is completely out of the question though. It's our firm belief that emotions can only cloud our judgement and it has to be kept separate from work life." Which is why it would be more difficult to convince her people of their marriage. It was completely irrational to marry a Tatterstall in the middle of a war.

"However, my people still believe in love and that sometimes it can overcome any rationality. Although rare, the Khollagers can be overcome by this emotion and throw out all reason. It's going to be very difficult for my kingdom to accept us, but I know that they will eventually warm up to the idea," She concluded just in time for her guards to approach them by the entrance. They seemed displeased with Colton but felt an obligation to protect the princess. Elaina heard about the Tattersall's view on her family and it wasn't completely false, but it was driven to the extreme. The Mertons had a reputation for being stone cold, ruthless, and back stabbers. As long as it worked out in their favor, the Mertons were rumored to do anything despite violating their humanity. While not completely true, Elaina could understand why his people believed that.

Talen Falk | Naive ✘ Empathetic ✘ Fickle

Multitasking was not something that was normally a problem for Talen. However when it came to Nikolai she found herself almost forgetting to do anything but listen. There was a soft but subtle power. The kind that didn't come across as authoritarian, but the kind that you knew was there. But she did end becoming a little more adventurous with her food. For awhile the two ate in silence, a silence which she could feel his gaze shifting over her, probably trying to seize her up if she'd be any good in hand to hand combat or not. "It's amazing the villagers don't know about this war... Funny what a few miles of trees and walls can hide." The soft-spoken witch, with her thick copper hair and rust tinted streaks realized. It was almost as if she'd stumbled into some secret world that few have been able to bear witness to. She wondered if the people around here would view her as an outsider, for as long as she chose to make a home here.

As he spoke, answering questions of when she should be thrown into his training regiment, Talen detected an air of patience to his words, for that she was grateful. "I planned on giving you a tour of the village and then starting training." It was a little less daunting to know that she wouldn't just be given a bit of steel and told to figure it out. Nikolai seemed to have a pretty good idea of how he wanted to go about her training, but if she was being honest Talen hoped it wouldn't come down to a sword fight. Even though he assured that her strength, or lack there of, could be used as an advantage. "Trusted him so far. Guess it would be foolish to stop now." She thought, pausing and laying her fork down, finding the food that had been served quite filling. As for her picking a weapon, she didn't care. So long as it was light and she could wield it without draining too much of her strength. Eventually they moved away from talk of weapons and fighting which she was grateful. Talen knew that until she was used for whatever purpose Nikolai had schemed up, her time would be used to learn how to defend herself, and this pack of his.

Talen became visibly more intrigued as Nikolai answered her questions about his lineage. She listened, brow slightly furrowed as she committed this information to memory. That book she'd been given earlier would be read but Talen wanted to bolster her frankly lacking information about werewolves and their packs. How much of Nikolai and the other were man? And how much beast? Were they one of the same or was it more complicated? "What about you? Tell me about yourself." It was a broad question, one that she bit her lip about at first. After gathering her thoughts she offered an apologetic smile. "I can't really offer up much information of my lineage... But after my mother passed the village took me in. More specifically a small live-stock farmer. I guess she and her husband had trouble having their own children; so they took me in." She had always known she wasn't their's by blood, it was a small place. Secrets had no room to hide. "The walls are boring. But they were safe for humans. If you can live the same life day in and day out surrounded by the same people, doing the same thing, and those four walls keeping you in like a box- it's alright."

At this her tone had dried a little. She had been a creature who had never liked constraints. Talen had often gotten in trouble as a kid for sneaking out past the walls. To play in the forests just beyond. Most of the kids thought she was mad for doing so. "I guess it works out I ended up here." She concluded averting his gaze. The rest of the breakfast was quiet, Talen picking around her food. It wasn't she was picky just that she tended to have morning stomach. Besides, she didn't want to have too much food in her stomach while training, it would only make her sleepy and sluggish on her feet. When it became clear they were both finished eating she sat started to get to her feet. "So then, shall we?" Masking her hesitancy about the combat training, her voice took on an impish edge; while her eyes sparkled with a sort of wicked light. "I never thought I'd be taught how to fight by a werewolf. I can say definitely say that." The words were light, gentle, with a subtle teasing note. "Thank you for breakfast. It was delicious." Talen tacked on hurriedly, not wanting to come across as rude or ungrateful.

"Well, I'm eager to learn more about it." He said, though wasn't quite sure how he felt about any of that. His culture may be too demanding for her; and her's would likely be too lonely for him. But, even so he'd shoulder all that for his people. For her people- even for Elaine. He didn't love her, he couldn't. He'd only just met her and as much as he wished it wasn't true; he didn't know if they could properly ever overcome their differences in private. Would something that seemed menial to him, push her too far? Would she want to sleep alone? Was he to be alone? Thoughts he hadn't before really thought of began to creep into his mind though he only gave her a mild smile. Opening his mouth, wanting to assure her everything was fine; Colton found he couldn't. He didn't know if he could promise that. Instead he offered the second best thing, well it would of been to an Elsekr woman. "Everything may be fine, they may not. But even if things get hard you won't be alone in facing them."

He knew it wasn't a declaration of love, more like a promise of support. And for now? That's the best he could of done by her. Falling into silence Colton, shoving aside his initial thoughts of her customs tried to delve a little deeper into them. Rational was good, it wouldn't betray them as emotion would. A rational mind could make logical based decisions. And if they never knew anything but cold, unfeeling logic- it wouldn't seem harsh to a Khollager. "I'm sorry if this pushes you today. But I think it's wise you have a chance to see everything we've talked about for yourself." Colton wouldn't push her, he would refrain from kisses in public as she had seemed positively abashed by that. Just hand holding, an arm wrapped around her waist. Small touches that really were like second nature for him. "Most of my people have never seen a Merton, much less a Khollager in a peaceful setting. Hopefully this will open their minds to realize that your people are not what they thought." He remarked, though fell quiet quickly as a few reluctant guards shuffled over- three in total. The Tattersall castle had been built directly in the center of the Elsekr capital, Lewyin.

Partially so they could be close to the people, and mostly for convenience. The Tattersall always had loved being in the middle of things. Colton adored looking out his windows, past the tall imposing walls guarded always, to the capital's life and vivacity. Luckily, the marketplace was about a five minute walk, and with the sun starting to sink lower and lower into the sky; it was the perfect time to go. The air was cool enough that it was pleasant to the face. Not too warm nor cold, the merchants were in their full setup. Music floated on the air and his people strolled about, blissful and happy. One of the only times they were like this. Since it was crowded Colton was quick to twine his fingers with Elaine's, his jaw set firmly with determination. If he was going to declare her his Naga, then he needed to do so in an unapologetic manner. There had to be no sense of wavering, or doubt on his part. And Colton had to act like they were moonstruck calves who could not get enough of each other. A few people had noted their arrival before they even reached the expansive dusty market, with the merchants with their booths all laid out and decorative, and poorer merchants selling their wares on the ground on a blanket.

At first their eyes delighted to see their king, a few of the merchants already holding out gifts; though most of them faltered when they noted his companion. A look of depraved curiosity entered their gazes. Elsekr genes tended to yield sapphire, emerald, or a mixture of either; and now they held notes of uncertain disgust in some cases, horror, or just perplexity. Beside him he felt Elaine tense. It was instinctual as he shifted her hand his grip, choosing to run his thumb in circles over her hand as if trying to calm her. However, his people must of been completely unawares of how to react to seeing a Khollager, a Merton no less, holding the hand of their Basileus- the male equivalent of a Naga. They had lost many words of the Old Language that used to be spoken when the war first began, but they hadn't lost the official titles for a King and Queen. His eyes flickered towards his ring on her hand, and gently, he tugged her in the opposite direction of the marketplace. "Here, I have a surprise for you." Was the only explanation he gave, though his intent was made clear when he stopped in front of a jeweler's stand; his wares sparkling magnificently beneath the sun's rays. "Pick something to go with the engagement ring love." Colton urged. She did not only belong to him, so there was no reason for her to only wear his signet as an engagement ring.

    Nikolai Torbjorn | Wolf King

    Image

It seemed that Talen was surprised to hear the Wolf King turn a question in her direction. As an alpha, he tended to dominate the conversation but did his best to refrain from speaking too much. Nikolai needed to gather as much information about the circumstances surrounding this alliance. Although his instincts were to trust her, she was still a complete stranger to him and a foreign presence within the pack. He listened to her speak with a careful ear, trained to sense when a human told lies. His father explained that their heartbeat always sped up the smallest amount that a werewolf could pick up. Nikolai strained to hear Talen's heart rate maintain a strong, steady rate as she explained her tale. It was odd for Nikolai to swallow since he knew everything about his lineage from its beginnings. Every single moment of his life was documented from birth. For her to not know anything was quite puzzling. The mere idea of growing up without knowing his background was actually terrifying - to have no identity.

"I see," He mumbled in return, unable to picture himself in a human's shoes. It seemed to be more mundane than he had originally gathered from the tales from his pack. Being surrounded by the same people day in and day out? Performing the same task on repeat? As future King, he enjoyed the his fast-paced environment that only demanded the best of him. Every single day he was required to alter his skills to accommodate their current needs. A King never faced the same challenge twice. In one swift thought, he verified that he could never live the life of a regular human. It was no wonder that they cowered behind that wall, hoping that no outsiders would ever disturb their peace. "You're different though. You approached me without any fear. Even though you grew up with humans, you're nothing like them," He commented, standing up from the table to begin the tour. Nikolai said nothing more on the matter though, turning to exit the area.

Returning back to the center of the village, he finally addressed her words. "Yes, I suppose you could never think that," He lightly chuckled. Nikolai could see that she was merely trying to lighten up the situation. All this talk about mysterious family members and a raging war set the atmosphere to be a little too heavy. "It is our pleasure," He reassured Talen, nodding in her direction. It was nice to see that she had manners. Most werewolves spoke ill of the humans since they lacked any ounce of grace and poise. They were treated like trash by the humans for merely having fur. The earliest tales between humans and werewolves spoke of humans running after them with pitchforks for "attempting to claim their lands". However, all his people wanted was to share resources. "Follow me," He unintentionally commanded, deciding to start around the perimeter of the camp. Taking her throughout the village, he introduced her to various members of the pack from healers to warriors. They seemed a little cautious at first but were more than willing to cooperate on Nikolai's behalf. He showed her where they kept her resources, where to find certain merchants, and, most importantly, where she could easily find him throughout the village. Ending at the sparring grounds, he reached into his back pocket to produce a detailed map of various landmarks throughout the village to help her navigate their lands. "Just in case you ever get lost."

"Now, the fun starts," He devilishly grinned, taking a few steps away from the copper haired witch. "I want you to come at me," He stated, just standing there with his whole entire body relaxed. "The lesson for today is to try to land a hit on me. I have no weapons and no defense. I am completely open and vulnerable." Waiting for her to strike, true to his word, Nikolai stood there and waited for Talen to come at him. Although, his mind never stopped running as he analyzed the slight movement in her body. Knowing that this was her first try, she would probably come at him from the front. Maybe try to hit him in the stomach or somewhere that wouldn't actually hurt. She was still terrified to harm anything, but that wasn't the nature of war. People who never even met each other were sent to kill each other on sight. "You're not going to hurt me. I have had worse done."
    Elaina Merton | The Princess

    Image

Just as his customs sounded completely odd to her, Elaina's customs seemed to puzzle him as well. If their kingdoms were already on opposite sides of the spectrum, it would take time for them to adjust to each other and their traditions, but she was willing to learn more about the rich history of the Elsekr kingdom. After all, their empire was just as respected as her own. It was obvious that she would have to be more open with her emotions though and be willing to show affection in a public area. Here, that was the normal. The idea of kissing in public caused the butterflies in her stomach to flutter around uncontrollably, flushing her cheeks. Oh, the passing thought was so embarrassing. Elaina didn't know if she could ever push herself to that extreme. Would they ever be able to completely accept each other's customs? She was afraid that one of them would break underneath the pressure. She nodded back to agree with his statement, pulling her out of her thoughts. "However, will that be enough?" Elaina whispered back, letting her eyes move about the hallway. They never knew who could be listening on them.

For now, that statement was all that they could promise each other and cling onto. All that she could ever be certain of was Colton's support on the matter to bring peace to their countries. On the other hand, she was unsure of how her kingdom would react to people governed by their emotions. The Khollagers were taught from childhood to always think rationally and to suppress their emotions. To them, it was was what made humans weak. They could never understand that boundaries needed to be crossed in order to accomplish certain tasks. Despite the rumors, the Khollagers never infringed upon humanity for those inherent laws created the basis of rationality. No stealing, no lying, and especially no murdering one another. "I understand, and I want you warn that I will be uncomfortable. However, this is important for both of us, and I will get past this. I will try my best to embrace your customs," She spoke honestly, letting a small sigh escape her lips. Elaina would be whatever she needed to be in order to make this work. Although against her fundamental ideals, she entertained the thought of kissing Colton in public. It was the right thing to do in order to keep up the facade, but for now she kept it to herself. She didn't want to make any promises that she couldn't keep.

Exiting the castle, Elaina deeply breathed in the fresh air after being holed up for the past few days. The wind softly brushed against her cheeks and moved through her strawberry blonde locks. It was beautiful weather for the princess, drinking in the sun's rays on her skin. Back in her lands, she adored walking around the markets and taking in the sights of her people going about their days. With the sun setting, they appeared to hit rush hour as Elsekrs were completing their last minute shopping before returning home to the family. Fathers, mothers, daughters, and sons all bustled around the market, warming her heart to see how lively it was. This seemed to be a small light in the abyss of darkness for her. Feeling a set of fingers intertwine with her own, Elaina smiled over in Colton's to hide her surprise. She fought her body that almost went rigid and refused to move. She had to focus on the task before her, willing herself to take in deep breaths to relax her muscles. In the end, she eventually relaxed herself and realized that holding hands was the most logical way to prevent from being separated in the crowd. Plus, they needed to appear as though they could barely keep their hands off of each other.

She could feel pairs of eyes staring her down, wondering why she was with their future Basileus. All were confused then shifted into looks of horror at the realization she was a Merton then some lastly transformed into hatred while others softened. There was Merton on their turf, and their King had placed a ring on her finger. Elaina was used to the attention but never under this situation. Her people always welcomed her with adoring eyes, but she never felt this kind of tension before. It was as if a pin could drop and the entire nation would hear and erupt into chaos. Her hand tightened around his own, needing some sense of security, until his thumb began to move across her skin. Elaina had never felt this kind of sensation before, but it was surprisingly relaxing and she silently thanked him. Feeling Colton pull her in one direction, she obliged and followed him down a couple of intertwining pathways. She wondered where he was taking her, but she would see soon enough. "Oh, wow. They're beautiful," She trailed off, seeing the gems glistening underneath the rays of the setting sun. Her eyes scanned over the various beauties, pretending to act as infatuated as possible, until they settled on the sapphire. Elaina could see her eyes reflecting back at her in the deep blue hues of the stone, reminding her of Colton's eyes on the night he proposed the engagement. His eyes pierced through the darkness and looked upon her with such determination. "The sapphire one is absolutely gorgeous," Elaina decided as her eyes flickered over in Colton's direction. It would compliment his ring well.

Although the merchant seemed wary at first, he could not deny selling merchandise to his Basileus. It would be utterly disrespectful, and, so, he even discounted the price for the two love birds. "For your beautiful bride," The merchant mumbled while placing the ring into Colton's hand, seeing how delighted the couple was. It even reminded him of his marriage to his wife, warming his heart. How madly they were in love with each other, even though their parents didn't agree. "Thank you, sir," She smiled in the merchant's direction, feeling a little of the heaviness lift off of her heart. Holding out her hand, she waited as Colton slid on the ring on top of their engagement ring and admired its beauty once more. However, she paused at the opportunity to be more expressive with their love. People were watching them, waiting for something else to happen. The Khollager Queen couldn't merely thank their Basileus for buying her a ring. Summoning all of her courage, Elaina reached out to wrap her arms around his neck, bringing him in for a hug. She wanted to cringe and bury her face in his neck, pretending as if all of this never happened. This would have never been accepted within her kingdom, and she was sure that her mother would be even more ashamed of her. Even her guards were clearly surprised by their princess' actions as their jaw went slightly slack, emitting a small gasp. Letting a moment pass, she quickly let go of Colton and cleared her throat. "I really love it," She stammered, unable to hide how flushed her cheeks were from the public display.

Talen Falk | Naive ✘ Empathetic ✘ Fickle
    Image

After breakfast, the alpha remained true to his word; leading her through the village. Along the way to the sparring grounds, she was introduced to several wolves, most were unsure about her though didn't give her any trouble. As long as Nikolai seemed to accept her, the other wolves followed suit. As they made their way he would point out useful merchants, resources she could use such as communal firewood, a couple wells for water. Most people here seemed to trade with one another. Coin seemed pretty obsolete. Just when her head was spinning with all the new places and faces, Nikolai produced a map handing it to her in case she got lost, and where the easiest places to find him would be. Which was useful as she tended to wander, which would lead to being getting lost. After the small tour, they ended up in the sparring grounds; just as he had promised over breakfast. "I want you to come at me," Against her bidding a slender eyebrow rose up in surprise. "You want me to hit you?" Everything told her it was an unwise move. Even though he was trying to help her she had been raised in a human village. You learned to fear wolves, not spar with them after breakfast. Biting her lip, sucking it between her teeth nervously the young witch's reluctance was clear.

"You're not going to hurt me. I have had worse done." Talen didn't doubt it. She could only imagine the kind of hurt's Nikolai had suffered through. Exhaling, allowing the jitters to still she was standing close enough that a simple punch would probably reach him. Land a hit? Probably not. But, he was waiting for her to do something, trying to sort out how much work she needed Talen was sure. Rather abruptly she moved, her small hands balled up into fists, flying towards his nose. Talen's nerves slowed her speed a bit, though she wasn't sure it'd of helped as the blow was pretty quickly deflected. Quickly stepping away from him once the hit was deflected she paused, this time taking time to look for an opening. Her aunt had given her a few tips for fielding off an attacker. Mostly the men in the market who got too liberal in their harassing. But, it was mostly dirty moves. Step on a toe, throw an elbow- that kind of stuff. She hadn't a dress on which wouldn't hinder her movement, she supposed that worked for her favor. Watching the village guards practice with one another time to time, she picked up on a few things. How with a bigger oppenent they would use all their weight in well timed attacks, throwing their weight to make them stagger. They would then manage to wrestle them to the ground. It was particularly useful, and a somewhat brutal charge that often caught their opponents off guard.

Maybe a simple shoulder check would throw Nikolai off balance for the chance of an opening. She was close enough that the momentum should be forceful enough, but not too far away that he'd positively have time to see her attack coming. "Now or never." She told herself darting forward, twisting her body so her shoulder crashed into him. It had worked in the sense it sent Nikolai stumbling back a little bit; but Talen had underestimated the recoil from that. She stumbled back a step, though determined to not waste this oppertunity blindly swung, hitting air. But, she'd been pretty close that time. Talen knew it wouldn't be easy, but at least her shoulder charge at him had worked. Like he said, she could use her petite and almost harmless looks for her advantage. Staying close enough try to figure out where to throw a hit next, she paused fighitng the urge to gently rub her shoulder. The soldiers made that one look a lot easier. The cold flushed her high, prominent cheekbones a gentle shade of pink, while her breath clouded in front of her face. This went on for a little while longer, Talen trying different angels and ways to land hits though so far it hadn't yielded any results. Outside the sparring ground's fences people had come and gone, some with baskets, some childen, and some pausing to watch.

The longer their session dragged on, the more the young witch grew tired. Some of her punches were starting to turn sluggish and it was pretty apparent that Nikolai was not going to go easy on her. For that she was grateful. But she needed to try to land a hit. Careful eyes picked apart his stance, the best she could; and likewise his gaze watched her, trying to figure out where and how she was going to attack. "If I charge him again, he'll expect me to try to shoulder past him for a punch. But if I can drop quick enough to and kick his knee. Maybe that'll work." With a new plan Talen took a few deep breaths, determination setting her jaw firmly before she hurtled forward again, going through the motions of throwing a shoulder. Just as she predicted, Nikolai was ready for that, but where he was expecting a punch, he wasn't expecting a kick. He didn't stumble back as much as he had the first time, but that was fine- Talen didn't need him to go far. The moment she collided into him again, wincing a bit, she followed up with a kick as quick as possible. She had meant to aim for his knee, though had been off-target. Instead her booted foot struck more like grazed his upper leg. It was the best attack she'd done so far and moving a bit away fought off a smile while her eyes glowed with a rougish light. It hadn't been a very strong kick nor, attack; but she managed to land her hit. Even if it took her awhile. While she may not of been too terribly strong, Talen lacked a quitter's spirit.

Colton Tattersall | Stoic ✘ Amiable ✘ Impulsive
    Image

Some part of him was relaxed, pleased even that she seemed to take to the marketplace. This was where he spent a lot of free time, browsing stalls and listening to his people. In the marketplace, Colton had about as much freedom as he ever did; yet it was away from the castle. The remaining Tattersall king hated being in the castle all the time. He'd rather be out here, witnessing the life and joy of his people, talking with them, getting to know them; and he liked making himself available to them. In return they treated him graciously, and all were willing to follow him to the gates of Saol. Hopefully they would follow him in this newest era, his newest most prized mission- and that was peace. Colton remained tall, proud and watchful near his soon-to-be wife. Colton hadn't been expecting much out of her today. In fact, the young man had forseeen the worse situation. Elaine becomming overwhelmed and damaging the image he was so frantically trying to sell to the public. But here she was, looking over the rings, picking a rather pretty and eye-catching piece. The man even grinned when the merchant complimented her; even if it was hesitant and mumbled.

With a flair of dramatics, Colton turned adorning her with his gaze as he agreed, "She is quite lovely. Your piece will certaintly compliment that. Espeically her eyes." About to reach into his coin pouch, carelessly shoved into the pocket of his trousers, Colton was stopped when Elaine threw her arms about his neck. This was a big step for her, and it only proved to Colton how she committed she was to pulling this arrangement of their's off. Reacting within the heartbeat, Colton pulled her close and wrapped his arms around her waist. Letting an expression of serene bliss flood his face he rested his chin atop her head; holding her until she pulled away. He was tempted to press a soft kiss to her cheek; though held back. This was enough, he didn't want to scare her off. A ripple of murmurs had broken out through the crowd and he beamed cheerfully at his subjects before turning back to the jewler. "Here. For your troubles and allowing my wife to find the perfect ring." Colton placed a handful of coin on his table gently, and the man's jaw slackened when he counted the money out. It was nicely above the original asking price. Turning to leave the man called out a more heartfelt, "Thank you! Mara bless your union- both of you!" Trying not to appear smug Colton gave the merchant one last nod before meandering to the next stall.

His hand never strayed far from Elaine's. Not as he led her to the stall across from where he bought her ring; the one that sold beautiful flutes and drums; along with an assortment of other insturments usually used in Elsekr dancing. Colton dutifully explained what each one sounded like, but promised that she would hear for herself during their wedding celebrations. There would be plenty of music and dancing; though Colton doubted he'd partake. Dancing was... Well it wasn't quite intimate but they believed that two people who were married should dance together. Just some poetic symbolsim of their united souls. And he'd always prefered to simply sit out and watch the festivites. The sun was beginning to sink beyond the horizon, and the past few stalls they'd been to had been merchants giving small samples of of food and drink. He already knew what he liked, though kept quiet about his own tastes and figured it would be best for Elaine to try what she would. The young king kept a careful eye on her face discerning when she liked something and when she did not; taking note so it could be prepared in the palace. Eventually people warmed up to them, some coming over and introducing themselves; and others ignoring Elaine completely to offer Colton a friendly hello and an update about their lives. Some talked about how their loved one's letter finally came from the front-lines; or how their frams were growing food quite well this years. A couple of people even offered Elaine shy gifts. They were mostly younger children, a dolly and a pendant were given; though Colton was incredibly pleased of this.

He could hardly keep the honest, geninue grin off his face. It always started with the younger generation. Eventually though, he knew that they should get back to the castle. By now his mother would of had a chance to deal with her thoughts on the matter, and Elaine's mother should be almost ready to leave. "Come, if we want to catch you mother before she leaves for Khollager, we should head back. Inform her of your intent to stay until after the coronation. I'll invite her to that, as you will be coronated as well. There will be a small wedding ceremony and celebrating after that." He announced, the guards looking quite relieved to head back. They'd been on their feet for awhile, wandering around; but it was fun. He even caught a guard smiling at a few street reformers. Swallowing swords or fire, a clown on stilts, and a few singing performances. The plus side to all this was that no one had tried to run his to-be bride through with a sword, or made any other attempt on her life; though he wasn't fooled. They would try. They would find opportunists and come from shadow to claim his or her life. To try to throw this land back into chaos- but Colton refused to let this happen. "So, do you think your mother will murder me? It was in her eyes." He joked in a hushed voice so ony she could hear, clearly teasing as he swung their hands to only embelish upon their image to the public.

[Ooh, I hate when that happens. I hope you feel better!]

    Nikolai Torbjorn | Wolf King

    Image

As Talen started off toward him, he could see her winding up a fist and directing it toward his face. It was if it all occurred in slow motion for the wolf, giving him ample time to react accordingly. He reached out to briskly push her arm off course before stepping aside to allow her momentum to carry her into the open space. "Could use work," He murmured mostly to himself, making mental notes for future reference. Her movements could have been faster and more concise, but her reflexes appeared to be better than most. However, her mind took too long to process and hindered her movements. She needed to relax her body to enable it to move more fluidly. When she backed up once more, Nikolai relaxed his body once more and allowed her to search for an opening. For now, that would be acceptable but she needed to be able to accurately scan over a situation in seconds. Her attacker surely would have reacted within moments of her first attempt. All he would have to do is focus on how to properly use those skills, and she would prove to be worth of fear.

He suppressed a chuckle as her shoulder smashed into him, making him stumble back a step. That had not been the best decision on her behalf since it seemed to have more of an effect on herself. Every move that she had seen from human soldiers only applied to certain situations, which she would soon learn. Although, he had to admit that there was an element of surprise to it that he never saw coming and her brashness impressed him. "Better." Whenever those moments showed up, Talen had to embrace them. It would only work to her advantage. Quickly, he regained his step and awaited her next advance. The next few minutes passed with Nikolai blocking her punches and advances on him with ease, moving about the sparring grounds. From afar, it was viewed as a dance with the Wolf King guiding himself with grace. He could see that Talen's stamina was wearing thin as her heart beat almost doubled and the sweat poured down her face. Her movements slowed and were even more transparent than before. That was another aspect that she would need to work on.

Despite the time that passed, Nikolai could see that her mind never slowed and the fire in her eyes burned brilliantly. That was a drive that he needed in his pack. No matter how many obstacles crossed her path, Talen would never give up and accept defeat. Watching her charge at him, Nikolai readied himself once more and watched as she showed all signs of attempting a shoulder crash. He braced himself for the impact, but she switched her movements at the last second and brought her foot up. Nevertheless, he stumbled back once step and shook off the shock. What he was not prepared for was her immediate second attack, catching him completely off-guard. His reflexes reacted accordingly and moved just as her boot grazed the space between his upper thigh and groin. "Ah, that was a lot better," He stated, holding up his hands for her to stop. Even that last attack had made his heart skip a beat. "Okay, we can call it a day," He settled on since she deserved the break. Tomorrow, they could work on weapons.

Nikolai disappeared into the shed to produce a towel for the both of them. "Catch," He called out before tossing it to her. Wiping down his neck and face, he realized that he had broken a sweat. He wasn't drenched or showing any sign of exhaustion, but Talen had pushed him the slightest bit. "Did you want to join me for a run? We have some time before dinner starts," He suggested, knowing that he wanted to go for one before joining the rest of the pack. His inner wolf had been practically begging him for the entire day to bask in the sun's rays. At the same time, he could take her over their lands so she could familiarize herself with them.
    Elaina Merton | The Princess

    Image

The more time she continued to spend on the Elsekrs lands, the more she became accustomed to their culture and traditions. Although she loved her kingdom, the Elsekrs were beautiful in their own way and Elaina could picture herself waking up to these lands every morning. They were nothing like the extreme Khollagers tales had said, explaining that crimes of passion occurred every day. Every person was just as harmonious as her own people. Just as Colton had foreseen, his people slowly warmed up to the idea of their marriage and completely fell for their show. They were more accepting than her people had ever been as many children even began to approach the future Naga with gifts and pleasant words; it brought a warm smile to her lips. Elaina floated about the marketplace and even became comfortable enough to separate from him for short periods of time. She viewed the beautiful flutes and various items that the merchants sold, reminding her of her own lands. Exchanging information with Colton, she could feel her heart warm to his traditions and no longer view them with such confusion. Even her guards began to warm of their kingdom.

The time seemed to escape the young princess as she continued to explore the marketplace, viewing the sun disappear from the sky. Elaina rubbed her bare arms lightly, feeling the temperature drop slightly in the sun’s absence. Soon, it would be time to return back to the castle and face her mother once more. The woman could hide her emotions well, but her temper snapped in the blink of an eye. Elaina could see through her mother’s mask quite well. She could hope that their time apart could settle her mother’s emotions, making her anxious for their exchange. It was obvious that Charlotte would not be pleased with her decision to stay behind to witness Colton’s crowing and even more upset with the exchange their wedding vows. Charlotte would never understand why her daughter was marrying their arch nemesis. Letting these thoughts cross her mind, Elaina couldn’t help but feel her delighted spirit take a dive. Although, she would never let the people of Elsekr experience this side of her as she plastered a smile on her face.

Elaina gave a small nod to Colton’s statement and turned to face away from the market, mentally preparing herself for what was to come. “Ah, I would not be surprised if she poisoned your drink with hemlock. I would be careful tonight,” She joked back with a saddened smile since it truly wouldn’t be shocking. Of all people, her mother believed that she was making a huge mistake with this union. In her own logic, her mother would justify her daughter by saying that it was to save her daughter. Letting her eyes drift down to their swinging hands, her eyes softened once more as a small sigh escaped her mouth. She never realized how exhausted she actually was from walking around the lands of Elsekr until now. The excitement of the performers and the townspeople kept her spirits and energy, making her crash automatically afterwards. “I’m actually quite tired,” She admitted with a half-laugh, taking the path back toward the kingdom. “But thank you. I enjoyed myself today.”

When they arrived back at the castle, she turned to dismiss her cards before turning to face Colton. “Well, I am off to speak with my mother then,” She announced, trying to drag out the confrontation for as long as possible. Elaina casted her eyes down to the ground for a moment before taking in a deep breath. “Wish me the best of luck and watch your drinks,” She half-laughed, giving his hand a light squeeze before turning to find her mother. Separating from him, she shook the nerves out of her body and walked down the hallway out of view. Her mother’s room was at the end of the hallway from her own. Elaina knocked lightly against the door and awaited her mother’s approval before peaking her head inside. “Good afternoon, Mother,” She greeted, letting the door softly close behind her. “I wanted to inform you of my decision to stay behind. I plan on attending Colton’s coronation…and we plan on having the wedding ceremony shortly afterward.” The heart was racing inside her chest and she tightly squeezed her hands together in front of her. Needless to say, her mother was less than pleased to hear of her plans. “Elaina, you cannot possibly think of marrying that, that Tattersall,” Charlotte spat in her daughter’s direction. As predicted, her mother could never understand. “Mother, I love him and that is final. There is nothing you could do or say to make me change my mind. However, I…We would appreciate your attendance.” Elaina requested but received no answer. “That is all I wished to share. Good night, Mother.” With that, she exited the room to return back to her own.

Talen Falk | Naive ✘ Empathetic ✘ Fickle
    Image

Talen had straightened up as soon as she heard his steady voice, "Okay, we can call it a day." Panting lightly feeling warm despite the cold air, she felt... Well alive. At one point she had wanted to join the village guard, but her aunt had forbade it; citing that it wasn't proper for a young woman, not to mention how dangerous it was. Talen was softly kicking herself over the fact she hadn't pushed that matter. The sun was past it's highest point, and if she had to guess it would be about three. The alpha had disappeared for a couple minutes, loping towards a shed at the edge of the sparring fields, leaving Talen to her briefest thoughts. "Let's hope this war doesn't pick up before I'm ready." Sparring with Nikolai while he was only deflecting her had shown Talen how helpless she would be if she were soon to meet a wolf in unbarred battle. "Catch." His return had been quiet, quiet enough that she didn't hear him coming back. Thankfully she didn't make a complete fool of herself as Talen managed to catch the towel, raising it to delicately wipe her face of the beaded sweat which had collected there. The sparring session showed on her face. How her cheeks flushed and nose flared slightly with each deep inhale of breath. "Gods please don't let it come down to a battle of physical strength. It'd be in my best interests to focus on magic. If I can."

The petite copper-haired witch once done wiping her face off, had figured that Nikolai would of been busy. Running a pack, heading war plans- things like that. And as much and oddly as she was drawn to him, didn't want to be a pain any longer. She had planned on going back to the room she'd slept in last night to retrieve the book about the pack's history- of which she was immensely interested in. She had never minded research, and the Curaj pack was a topic the svelte redhead figured she should know about. During their sparring match a good chunk of her hair had been loosened from her braid so with careful, pale fingers tugged the hairband out completely. Wavy locks of strawberry tumbled forward, giving her a wild and carefree look. Snapping the band around her wrist Talen realized that Nikolai too had stuck around. "Did you want to join me for a run? We have some time before dinner starts." A run? It would be nice to explore the land more. To get to know Nikolai more. And, she wasn't really sore from the sparring match. "If nothing else it'll help me sleep." The weather, for a winter day anyway, had been nice as well. And there was this restlessness to Nikolai that made her think that he hadn't quite burned off enough energy for the day. "A run it is." Talen agreed, the woman's voice cheerful and light. "I've wanted to see the woods more anyway." In honesty, Talen wanted to see all of it.

The lands around the village she had familiarized over the years of sneaking out past the walls, collecting berries or just simply spending free time out there. It were some of the only times she felt free. Away from watchful, judgmental eyes. She was curious to see if he'd shift into his bestial form. She'd seen it, briefly the previous night. It had been too dark to make out much though, Nikolai had blended nicely into the shadows of the forest. Still a little lost around the place that would serve as her new home, at least for now, Talen fell into step next to Nikolai this time. Rather than walking behind him as she had done on the way here; she felt less of his shadow that way. "What are you gonna do when the war's over? It must of been happening most of your life right?" Would peace be strange for him? Or was it something he would welcome? Giving the size of Nikolai's pack, it didn't appear like he'd be bored running things. Again, she noted the respect and admiration in the pack's eyes. Almost everything about this village was different than her own. It had taken her about an hour to get here, and yet- it was like they were living in a completely different country. Walking beside him, listening though letting her gaze wander around Talen also caught the looks of confusion on some people's faces. It didn't really surprise her, after all how many humans came to visit this place?

She was not only a new face, but a new face with the alpha. And even though there was no ill-intent, after hearing years of stories of how wolves maimed, killed, and ate people, Talen felt slightly unnerved. Overhead the sun was still lingering in the sky, they'd probably have about an hour before it got totally dark. With all the things Nikolai had informed the young woman of- she really didn't want to be caught out in the woods. Even if he was The King of Wolves. It was likely that all the myths the villagers told of wolves, likely descended from this Numar pack. They were likely the wolves that hunted for fun- the kind that Talen should rightfully be afraid of. And suddenly the idea of going out into the woods seemed a little more daunting. They were nearing the gates when she reached out, gently laying a hand on Nikolai's bicep fixing him with a look of concerned trepidation. "It's safe? Right? With the other pack?" She doubted he'd take her if Nikolai thought she'd be in trouble, but it was better safe than sorry. After all, she was pretty sure that if a wolf so wanted- it could rip through her neck as if it were made of nothing more than melted butter. She wasn't sure what magic she possessed, and would in this state be defenseless. The white noise of the village rippled behind them, and a beam of stray sunlight fell across Nikolai's broad back, sending a streak of light through his dark, unruly mass of hair and shadows scattering about them.

Colton Tattersall | Stoic ✘ Amiable ✘ Impulsive
    Image

A rare, honest chuckle burst through his lips as Elaine went along with the joke, cautioning him against hemlock tainted drinks. "Well, at least the kingdom would fall to your capable hands." There was a hidden somberness to those words. She was his wife, his queen- if something happened to her the lands would fall to her. Legally, he strongly doubted that his family would let that go without a fight. But, Colton was hopeful that if something happened, she'd be able to be a queen to both people. As they made their way back, dusk falling upon them and casting the world in hues of orange and reds- Colton found he was content. This day had gone better than he planned, and he was confident for the future. That this senseless bloodshed would end once and for all. He had to believe that. He was giving up his life for it in a sense, and so was Elaine. Colton, growing up had sworn never to marry. How could he? It was a death sentence of whomever he loved, and how could he do that? Sure, he didn't love Elaine. But he didn't want any harm to come to her. And while they were both high-risks for assassination attempts, this only increased those odds. “I’m actually quite tired, but thank you. I enjoyed myself today.” At this Colton turned his attention back towards her and offered a bittersweet smile. "When I was younger my mother would send my siblings and I down to the market if we had too much energy. Always put us right out."

It was like a knife in his gut talking about his lost family. How he had to stand at four siblings funeral pyres, and his own father's. Colton just didn't want that life anymore. He didn't want that life for Elaine either, he could only assume they'd had a similar childhood when it came to lost loved ones. By the time they made it back to the castle, about to part ways she turned to him and gave a small smile. “Well, I am off to speak with my mother then, wish me the best of luck and watch your drinks.” Colton chuckled, a rich throaty sound as he realized that he should probably do the same. His mother couldn't do anything about this. He was king in everything but official title, she really had no power over him. And he didn't want to make their relationship bitter, his mother was one of the few familial bonds he had left. But he wouldn't let her judgements cloud what could be the end of a war that had dragged on for centuries with no real cause anymore. "Goodnight Love." Colton wished her, watching as her own guards hurried after the princess. On his own he left his facade of adoring husband-to-be drop. On the way to his mother's chambers, he found himself dragging his feet, wishing that this conversation didn't have to happen. Colton didn't want to have to listen to her trying to convince him to marry an Elsekr royal instead. Or an Elsekr common person... Or just an Elsekr. Once he approached her chambers he knocked stiffly on the dark ceder doors. "Come in." Irene bade.

Upon pushing the doors opened the graying queen glanced up from her book her lips pursing into a frown. "Colton. Do you need something?" Ice dripped from words and Colton forgot just how terrifying his mother could be when she wanted to. "Yes. We need to talk." At this Irene just scoffed and turned back to her books. "You know full well what I think of that matter. I find it tasteless and a reckless endangerment to your life, and a blatant breach of trust to your own people. But what does my opinion matter?" Never did the Tattersall queen have to keep her tongue on any matter that displeased her. Sighing the young Basileus took the seat across from her. "I'm not asking you to accept her as a daughter. I just need you to trust me. I know what I'm doing. Ending the war that has claimed the lives of Father. Of my siblings and your children. Of grandchild- and cousins. I'm doing this for everyone." His mother finally looked up from her book and put it down on the table between them, a fierceness in her gaze that he'd not seen since Gregory's death. "This is the room you used to come running to when you had nightmares. Nightmares of Merton children ripping you apart. Ripping your siblings away from us. And I used to let you sleep with your father and I. Because I knew that those dreams were all too real. That one day I would lose many of you to them. We are too different Colton and the first chance your innocent faced Merton bride gets- she'll gut you like a pig."

Pausing, Colton fought back frustration. "Mother- Elaine is not like what you think. When you spend more time together you'll understand this. The Khollagar people aren't the soulless machines that we've been raised to believe. She want's peace as we do. The past five days I have sworn that I would do everything in my power to bring that peace about. That our people wouldn't live and die on a sempiternal front-line. That our people get to go homes to their family. That our people don't have to fear war anymore, or death, or losing those they loved. I am doing this whether or not you support me on the issue. This is non-negotiable. I pray that you at least have the sense to be kind to Elaine. She'll be staying with us as she'll be have her coronation as Naga beside me. We'll hold a ceremony after." The man bade, feeling his temper about to get the better of him. Fuming, slamming the door on his way out the young king didn't understand why his mother couldn't see that for all it's risks- it was all justified. If he and Elaine could end this damned war, he didn't care what price he had to pay. Colton was halfway back to his room when he realized that, Elaine's talk probably hadn't gone any better. If anything it'd probably been an utter disaster much like his. Changing direction abruptly the blonde male decided to check on her. The walk to her chambers weren't very long, they weren't all that far from his. It wasn't too late, so unless she had turned in early she was likely still up. When he reached her chambers he paused though after steeling his nerves knocked softly on her door. "Elaine? If you're still up I just wanted to check on you. Make sure everything is okay after... After discussing things with your mother." Colton called loudly enough to be heard through the thick door.

    Nikolai Torbjorn | Wolf King

    Image

Nikolai was delighted to hear that she was going to join him, liking her refreshing spirit. After an intense sparring match, she still had some spunk and spirit left within her. “Great,” He replied with a genuine grin, taking her away from the pack’s headquarters. As they neared the edge of camp, Nikolai deep inhaled the smell of the pine and cedar trees while basking in the rays of the sun. The temperature was quickly shifting every day to accommodate the future spring months, and he couldn’t wait until its time. That was easily Nikolai’s favorite time of the year. The flowers would be in full blossom and all of the animals would wander the forest grounds. In the winter, the forest lands were barren and completely empty. It was difficult for the pack to find their next meal if every other animal was hibernating. In the spring, he would be free to roam over their lands and find more resources that were hiding underneath blankets of snow. Even hunting would be exponentially easier for the pack. This is was usually when the young cubs were able to make their first kill. However, they still had a few more weeks of the harsh winter to brace through.

As curious as ever, Talen asked him a few questions on their journey. It brought a small grin to Nikolai’s lips since no person had ever taken such an interest in their pack. People outside of the werewolf circle tended to shy away from learning any information about them, believing that ignorance was bliss. “Yes, it has happened for all of my life, actually…” He started off, letting his mind trail off to the future. However, his mind continued to draw a blank about anything dealing with the future tense. “I suppose that this wouldn’t be the best thing to admit, but I’m not really sure. My pack has been in war for about eighteen years, and every father has focused every ounce of energy into it. I don’t even think my pack can remember a life before the conflict occurred,” He confessed, hoping that this would not falter her faith in them. Although abysmal, it was the truth. His father prepared him to have skills to conquer and to win a war, but nothing about what would occur afterward. Growing up, the mere thought seemed to be so far away. “For now, all I want is to have my people safe and to end this war. After that, I can start to think of what the pack’s future will be,” He settled on, thinking that answer was sufficient enough. As more time continued to pass, his inner wolf begged to come out and be freed of its restraints. It wanted to feel the rays of the sun against its skin and the wind running through its fur.

About to step over the boundary of their lands, he paused as a hand encapsulated his bicep and forced him to pause. It was cool against his skin, reminding him of how closer to human she was. Although her concern was merited, Nikolai kept their acquired territory carefully observed and safe guarded. Any step they progressed forward was another step they progressed to finally winning the war. He would never let the Numar pack take back any of his pack’s gained land. “Yes, it’s safe. We have multiple guards that make sure that this land is secure. If it makes you feel any better, we safe houses all over as well,” He reassured her, letting his eyes glance down at the hand. The contact was still completely odd to him, not feeling someone of the same body temperature. He viewed her as one of his own people, seamlessly blending into the pack. Talen had only joined a day ago, but it felt as though she had been with them for ages already. As if she belonged there from the start. As her hand slid off of his arm, Nikolai could feel the tingling sensation of where it had been.

Taking a step away from Talen, Nikolai crackled his neck and allowed his body to settle as a beam of sunlight reached out to start his transformation. He collapsed to the ground and landed on all fours as his inner wolf began to start over, allowing his tanned skin to shift into an unruly mess of darkened curls. Waiting for his shift to end, Nikolai grit his teeth in pain and dug his fingers into the ground. Every bone in his body cracked and readjusted to accommodate his wolf form, elongating the limbs. A snout formed where his mouth had originally been, showcasing razor sharp teeth. His ears pointed in an upward direction, claiming their true form. Unable to keep up with his body’s sheer size, his clothes ripped to shreds and fell to the forest floor. His hands and feet transformed in enormous paws while his fingernails sharpened, lengthening to become to most deadly part of his wolf form. Once his finished, Nikolai shook out his hair while his body readjusted to his heightened senses. His eyes traveled over toward Talen, hoping that she hadn’t been frightened. Although, something told him that she wouldn’t be. Jerking his head in a direction, he took off in a light jog.
    Elaina Merton | The Princess

    Image

Quite aware of the train wreck that had been, Elaina returned to her chambers for the night. Her mother was adamant about what a mistake she was making and how it would be the fall of the empire. If she were weak in her resolve, Elaina would even believe her mother. All she could remember was her mother’s searing eyes and despise burning beneath her demeanor. It made her squirm in her seat, shaking off the gaze. While she felt strongly about the intended outcome, it could never make the present any easier. She sat before her mirror and began to remove the make up from her skin with water and a cloth. Although the servants offered to help, she wished to be alone and declined their offer. The cloth traced the outline of her heart shaped face then moved over her high cheeks bones. A small sigh escaped her lips for the umpteenth time this evening as she squeezed out the cloth. Why couldn’t this war just resolve itself? That way she wouldn’t have to marry Colton or lose the support of her mother.

She reached out to touch her reflection in the mirror, analyzing her tired eyes. Without the foundation, the shadows underneath her eyes seemed to grow and reveal how worried about this marriage she truly was. She actually looked like a mere shell of the once confident, beautiful young ruler. Would it really end the war? Would it put a stop to all of their pains and miseries? What if this was all a huge mistake just as her mother had predicted? All she did know was that her mother became another casualty of the war, barely even taking the time to glance at Elaina. Charlotte was Elaina’s best friend. In a household filled with men, her mother was her solace and listened to her every whim and concern along the way. They could be free with one another, expressing as many emotions as they wished. Charlotte understood her daughter and believed her in any way possible, becoming her number one supporter to claiming the throne. Now, she could barely get her mother to utter more than a sentence to her before letting the silence take over. Elaina bit down on her lip to prevent the tears from welling up in her eyes. No Khollager Queen would allow this to affect her. She had a job to do and allowing her mother to interfere with that went against all of their principles.

Hearing a knock at her door, Elaina gasped out of fright and placed a hand over her beating heart. She was about to call out asking who requested her until the husky, rich voice called out to her from behind the door. Colton. She crossed the room to softly open the door, allowing him to see but a sliver inside the room. “Good evening, Colton,” Elaina greeted, wracking her brain to pick appropriate words to describe the encounter. Her fingertips tightly curled around the door, feeling all of the emotions flooding back to her all at once. It was hard to remain calm when all she truly wished to do was seek her mother’s comfort and wisdom. “My mother appears to be as stubborn as ever. I do not believe she will be attending the coronation or the wedding ceremony,” She admitted with a dark chuckle, casting her gaze toward the ground. The mere thought saddened her to the very core. Growing up, her mind fantasied her wedding ceremony. Her father would walk her down the aisle while her mother and brother would be seated within the crowd. She always pictured them to have hints of a smile beneath their stoic demeanors. Perhaps she would even be able to persuade her brother to have one dance with her. Breathing in deeply, she exhaled and plastered a smile onto her face. “I’m not sure if she will ever come around or understand what I believe the Khollager kingdom needs, but this has to be done,” She explained mechanically, offering a small smile.

Putting her personal issues aside, she could see in his eyes that the talk with his mother had not gone accordingly either. There was a spark of anger mixed with disappointment. It was the ultimate combination that only mothers could achieve, which she even regretfully discovered. Even though she could hide her emotions as much as she wished, the Elsekr people were more vocal and expressed them. Elaina couldn’t will herself to merely dismiss this observation since they could only rely on each other. After all, everyone else had turned their backs on them. She took a step to the aside, allowing the door to open wider. “Would you like to come in? There are few thoughts that I would like to share with you,” She offered, wishing to speak more openly with him. Elaina couldn’t risk having others eavesdropping on their conversation. Plus, she felt that she could be more vocal about her emotions in a more private setting. Waiting for Colton to step inside, she softly closed the door behind him and ushered for him to take a seat by the fire. “How did the talk with your mother go? I hope it went over better than mine had.”

Talen Falk | Naive ✘ Empathetic ✘ Fickle
    Image

To say watching Nikolai was a shock was an understatement. At first it startled her, when he dropped to the ground on all fours. He appeared to be so human that Talen for a moment thought that he'd hurt himself somehow. However, when she noted the rigidness in his body, how his face was screwed up with pain and his fingers dug into the snow and ice- she realized that he was shifting. That beast that was hidden in his blood was making an appearance. It was a mix of fascination and trepidation did Talen back away a few feet to give him room, watching his other form emerge. His visible skin began to thicken and shift as thick mocha colored locks began to rapidly grow, while tendons snapped and rearranged. Bones snapped, reshaped themselves while joints shifted as well. Talen should of been frightened; and she probably would of, it was any other wolf shifting in front of her. But that sense of trust which had led her to follow him in the first place hadn't changed- even if Nikolai's form had. His breathnig had thickened, though he hadn't made a grunt, groan, or whimper to otherwise indicated he was in pain- even though Talen was sure that the transformation had to hurt.

Talen had been in horrible pain the time she'd broken her arm in two places when she was a youngster. She shuddered to think what Nikolai's pain tolerance was. After he was done shifting, the beast completely overtook the man in terms of appearance. He was dauntingly large, much larger than normal wolves. She carefully drew a little closer to the wolf as he stood in place for a few minutes; probably adjusting to his wolf form. The first thing she searched for was any sign of the man in the wolf. At first all Talen could see was just a beast. Feral grace, predatory features such as his dangerously sharp teeth and nails reminding her of the wolf from the story about Red Riding Hood her aunt used to tell when she was young. "All the better to eat you with my dear." Ears that were designed to pick up heartbeats and the slightest of noises, paired with eyes that could see far more than she ever hoped to, and a nose that could pick apart a scent a mile away. Setting her jaw, Talen wondered just how sentient he remained in this form. His body had relaxed, he was tensed and far from poised to hunt her down, which she took as a pretty good sign. Rather all at once Nikolai turned, his gaze carefully measuring her reaction to his shift. It was then, under the same eyes that expressed softness and empathy was her question answered. Nikolai was still there, and a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding was exhaled.

As if bidding her to follow him the wolf awkwardly jerked his head, a laughably human motion before setting off towards the treeline. His steps were light, almost soundless against the snow- and Nikolai's form was a lithe vision of grace. In comparision she felt like a baby horse hurrying after him, her steps crunching in the snow. Despite their differences, an excitable grin had blossomed onto her pale and generously curved lips. Her petite legs churned snow out from beneath her boot as she hurried after him, her copper hair whipping about her face in the wind which had picked up. It was still cold, espeically for her fragile human-like body- but there was a shift on the wind. A subtle warmth that spoke to how spring was not far off. Soon this frozen wasteland would melt. The water would bring things back to life and much like the wolves of the Curaj pack- would shift into something magical and near unrecognizable from it's winter sleep. To his credit, Nikolai never left her line of vision. It was a visiual reminder for Talen she was still safe, and that in the off chance something happened he wouldn't leave her to fend for herself. Nikolai, was thoroughly enjoying his freedom that he found in the wolf's form. As much as Talen had been told wolves were dangerous, volitile and the villains of many pieces of literature she'd read- the copper haired woman couldn't bring herself to think that of Nikolai.

There was an unearthly majestic feeling just from watching him. To her, he was more like the guardian of the woods that the older folk in the village still sometimes worshiped on harvest day. Even her fastest sprint was jog for him, "The obvious advantage of having four legs." Talen decided, a dry humorous chuckle arising from her. The previous night, she had't really been able to see the forest. Sure, she'd stumbled through but it was nearly pitch-black. Today however with the last pure golden rays of light drifting down setting the earth ablaze with light- it was breathtaking. Snow and ice sparkled like the most delicate of diamonds off of tree's and their branches. A few winter birds could be seen in high branches; splashes of color against this perfect world of white. They called and cooed to one another, filling the air with birdsong. So far, her decision to leave the human village had been a good one. Talen had slowed to a meandering walk, committing to mind every twisted trunk and bump they had come across so far when she heard a chuffing noise from up ahead. Nikolai had paused turning to watch her with a rougish light in his eyes. "They say never rush a woman. But I was done looking anyway." She teased, jogging to catch up with the wolfman. Onwards they continued, Talen doing a fair job of not straying too far behind Nik. Nikolai led with purpose, a jaunt to his step. For awhile Talen thought the alpha was just excited to get back to the village, though that was proven to be false when he paused, the treeline thinning to reveal gentle hills which soped into a large open meadow.

She would bet in the spring that it would be beautiful- and a good place to hunt. Nikolai drew to a pause glancing up at her. Whether this was just a spot he liked, or a good place to hunt for future reference she wasn't quite sure, but it was nice to pause and take in her surroundings. Overhead the sun had begun it's desent filling the sky with dazzling displays of oranges, pinks, and reds. And all those reflected onto the expanse of snow below them. The territory was of a large size, and had the slender witch wondered just how far it expanded. In the coming days Talen would try to figure out just how much land they had to call home. As they stood, surveying the land below in quiet compainionship Talen enjoyed the sunsetting. The girl could find beauty in nearly anything, and sunsets were something that would never cease to awe her. She was tempted to run her hands through Nik's thick fur- but in case that was some grave offense refrained. However, the light was fading and dinner would be starting soon. It had been surprisingly fun, even if she'd done all the talking since their run though if she got caught out in the woods in the dark for a second night in a row- Talen wouldn't exactly be pleased. "C'mon. Let's head back before it gets dark. I garuntee that I don't have senses as good as yours."

Colton Tattersall | Stoic ✘ Amiable ✘ Impulsive
    Image

She hadn't informed him of anything that he hadn't expected to hear. Of course neither queen would accept what they were doing- but he was pretty sure he convinced his mother to stay out of this at least. And while she may not approve of his marraige choice, she wouldn't be vocal about that. Or... That was the hope for Colton anyway. However his anger and frustration must of been apparent as she sidestepped away from the door, holding it open for him and asking him to come in. He hadn't wanted to bother her and for a minute he considered denying her request- though figured it would be good to keep Elaine in the loop of how things were going. “How did the talk with your mother go? I hope it went over better than mine had.” She turned to him as the door shut behind him, questioning him as Colton had predicted. At first he was tempted to tell her everything was fine. The age-old instinct to keep family matters to himself nearly rolled off his tongue- though it would do more harm than good. Soon, she would be his family. "It... Wasn't what I had hoped for. However I don't think she'll try to stop the wedding. She's far more apt to give me trouble for it than anything. Part of me is angry with her." He admitted, voice steeling into a mirth of annoyance.

"I have been raised from birth to do what is right for the people. If I didn't think this wasn't right I wouldn't do it. She thinks that my alliances have shifted. Or that you'll gut me the first chance you get." Colton leveled with her, keeping his voice light and guaging her reactions. She didn't seem shocked, just maybe a little... disappointed. "But, on the other hand I understand why she's like that. This war has taken everything from her. But instead of wanting to do whatever she can to stop it- it's just broken her. Filled her up with fear. She can't seperate her thinking that you're family are soulless killing machines. She thinks I'm being manipulated and as one of her only children left, she wants to protect me. And I can't be angry about that. However, I can and will be furious if she tries to interveine in anyway. You and I- we're working hard to portray this image and I don't want her ruining it. I don't want her trying to take things into her own hands because I swore to protect you- and I meant it. If something happens to you, this war really will have no end. And I'm worried she won't understand this." Something about his bride's gentle expression spurred him into talking, to opening up and explaining just what made him so worried about this newest conversation with his mother. Because if his mother couldn't accept this- could anyone? If his mother thought he was betraying his people, did the people think that as well? Would they have the chance and time to prove that this was nothing but an attempt to help them?

"What of you? You seemed shaken." Switiching the subject his gaze flickered onto her with all the velvet grace of a viper. Yet, there was a gentleness there. This woman was his equal. Without her this plan would never work; and though there were still parts of him that distrusted her- Colton was doing his best to be kind and benevolent to her. After all this couldn't be easy for her. Colton was in his homeland. Where he was adored, looked up to- and surrounded by friends and family. Elaine was coming in as a Merton. The enemy, one of the last and people were going to be hostile towards her. She had no support other than him, and it forced her at least to rely on Colton. For that he felt it wasn't fair, but he'd be put in the same shoes when they travelled back to Khollagar. "Perhaps I can talk with her in the morning? Political marriages are custom in your lands, but she doesn't have to know that. Perhaps she would feel better under the impression that I love you. I would never let anything happen to you and I would sooner forsake myself than allow harm to come to you? I'm a very convicing person." He offered once she'd finished explaining how horrifically her conversation had been. "Family bonds are sacredly important. Perhaps she's coming off the wrong way but she still loves you very strongly- otherwise she wouldn't of reacted so poorly. She thinks the worse of me, and the world of you. If I were a parent I'd be... concerned as well." Colton added.

If he let himself think about it- everything just felt like too much. Too much blood to atone for. Too much hate and destruction. Too many pieces lost to ever be whole. And that made him feel as if he were drowning. But he had known this was going ot be hard work when he first started this plan, this mission of his. None of this was going to be easy. They had to set an example for the rest of their kingdoms to follow. To change the thinking and tension that had always been between the two people's. For a while he was quiet, though it was instincts that pushed him to draw a little closer to her. Ever so gently he reached out cupping his bride-to-be's cheek in the palm of his hand. "This situation is far from ideal as of now. I can't offer much besides my protection, assitance, and company. I know it's not proper in your kingdom but please, never feel you have to hide emotions from me. It's alright to be upset. Or cry, we're each other's only allies as of now. I'll do my best to make you a happy woman Elaine." Colton promised, a soft, somber promise etched into his words. She may not have the support of her mother- but she had his. And his was better than none. The last thing he would of wished on Elaine was for her to feel alone in this new place. Her misery would only brew malcontent in marriage and it wasn't something they could afford as of now.
